In this video, I'm going to be going against the grain and provide some arguments as to why you should not have a side hustle as a software engineer.

what does stacking bands mean?

“Bands” is a slang for money like when you have a lot of 100 you put them in bands, so stacking bands is accumulating money

I completely agree with you. People can't grasp the sheer amount of effort and energy that they will need to pull off a side hustle let alone one in the software industry which they would need dozens of hours of studying, doing projects, learning technologies, searching for a good freelance website, creating a portofolio and finding customers on the freelance sites. All of this while working a FULL time job? Yeah that ain't gonna happen unless you are really dedicated or aim to achieve something.

Totally agree! And the worst part about it is, some people will feel like the NEED to do it, and won’t let themselves take a break

I’ve said the same thing about returning to be a high school teacher after retiring out of tech but never meant it as a joke :) I genuinely think that some of my high school teachers had a really positive impact on the trajectory of my life, and paying that forward to the next generation would be really fulfilling for me.

To be clear, grinding LeetCode, learning System Design, and honing behavioral questions all while working on getting another job (recruiting, reaching out to jobs, applying) and all while maintaining a 9-5 will burn you out the same exact way, if not more than deploying your software skills to create something. Getting another job is a fulltime job as a software engineer, and a difficult thing to do in this current market. Additionally, and you point this out in your video, you posting this video is you having a side hustle as a Software Engineer. The reason this side job doesn't burn you out is because you enjoy it and you deploy your creativity. If you create for the sake of creating, then you are succeeding in your side hustle. But saying that getting another job is simpler, then my friend, you have lost both the point of why your side hustle brings enjoyment and lack the ability to communicate to others where the line is in your situation and the situation you are "warning" others about. Playing devils advocate does not absolve you or the responsibility you have to your viewers and people who look up to you.

Hey Mario! Thank you for spending some time to write out some constructive criticism, I really appreciate it. I think you raise a lot of valid points, including some I haven’t thought about/talked about in this video. To address a couple: 1. The job hunt is a ton of work and a massive time investment, especially in this economy, but IMO there is an eventual "end" once you get a job, you can stop grinding leetcode etc. With starting a business, the grind truly never stops and there’s no guarantee you ever make money. but we can agree to disagree. 2.“If you create for the sake of creating, then you are succeeding in your side hustle.” I think that’s only partially true. TBH if I knew there was a 0 chance I was going to make money from this (I currently am at $0 and it’s been 3 years lol), I wouldn’t stop, but my approach would drastically change. As much as I enjoy it, I do approach it more as a job than a hobby, which requires discipline and quite a bit of work. I think most people want to make their side hustle profitable, otherwise, it’s just a hobby, but that’s anecdotal. 3. To your last point, my personal opinion is that getting a new, high-paying job as an engineer is easier than putting work into a venture that may or may not make money. There is a lot of nuance to that statement, and situations will vary, but the reason I made this video is that getting a side hustle is one of the most common and loud pieces of advice in the finance space. I think a lot of people feel pressure to have a second source of income and lose sight of the why. If it comes down to strictly money (as it tends to), engineers are lucky to be in an industry where there’s money to be made. Again, there’s more nuance than I can include in a video, but if the concern is that someone won’t pursue a passion project, or feel discouraged based on my one video, from a guy with sub-1000 subscribers, and with a side hustle himself… idk I don’t think they were that motivated to see the whole thing through to begin with. All that aside, thanks for sharing your opinion! I definitely don’t know, or claim to know everything, and I can get caught up in my echo chamber. I hope you guys just know I’m coming at this with the best intentions, and these are all my honest opinions based on my own experiences! Thanks again for taking the time to write this

Good perspective especially when you did a comparison with consistently investing excess money over the duration of your work tenure. However, I bring you another perspective to side hustles. I will agree with you when it comes to doing side hustles for the purpose of just getting extra money. However, my opinion is, your goal should be to get out of the employment cycle as quick if you want to really tap into financial independence at its best. I wont deny, if you have a nice software job that keeps you cozy then you might not see the need to be your own boss. But the reality of employment is that it is unpredictable. Your company could just be bought by another Elon Musk and you wake up jobless. Also secondly, from my experience, in terms of scaling your income, entrepreneurship has more potential to scale your income faster than employment would. So I would encourage having a side hustle as a means of just trying your luck at using your growing skills to make them bring you money directly, then once you get to a point where you strike a bit of gold, then consider going into it full time.

I totally agree, I myself would probably try to do something on the side as well, for the same reason that you’ve mentioned. But I feel that a lot of people feel guilty or feel pressured into needing to do something like this, where in reality that’s not true. I think that you would really enjoy the book millionaire fast lane if you have not read it, I have some disagreements about the book, but you’ve summed up the overall idea of the book in this comment :)

i just play video games.. is that bad... but im quitting soon to hang out with people outside of video games, edit: i feel like video games is an easy-out for entertainment pretty much without having to spend money, going out you always end up spending like $20-$60+ per outing

While I totally agree that video games are fun, ( I play a lot as well ) I think there is value in going outside and “touching grass”. Money aside; do you enjoy going out with your friends ignoring the cost (20-60)? If you do you should do it if you can afford it. I had a very similar mindset a long time ago, but I realized that the 20-60 dollars won’t matter in the long term once I’m old. (This is all within reason obv.)
