Years ago, I was screwing around in Deus Ex. I decided to mess with Walton Simons' interrogation of the NSF prisoners. I followed him into the room and threw a mine into the cell. What followed was a hilarious symphony of emergent gameplay. The prisoners' AI saw a mine and ran to the cell door to escape. The door's AI saw NPCs that wanted to pass, so it opened. The hallway guard's AI saw enemy NPCs, so he shot them to death. Then Simons turned to me and said: "Jesus Christ, Denton!"

I wanted to check every possible corner of these masterpiecefully designed locations. I felt myself like I was solving problems instead of just runnin' through the plot by clicking buttons on keyboard. So many times I've frowned by thinking how to enter the building, how to bypass guards (was playn' unlethally), or what to say to the character. Newspapers, books, articles from public access-terminals are fantastically written. I was spending 3-5 hours on every mission. When you give creative freedom and enough resources to talented crew with ideas and will to create something good... a brilliant borns. Not everytime, but Deus ex this "time"

The biggest thing that makes this game special is that it's like a literal TV series, with multiple seasons, and you play through each episode. It's not just a one-off experience like a movie, like how they seem to structure games nowadays. The story evolves and evolves again, and again, and relationships get more personal. The people you interact with seem like real people, with the exception of a few cheesy accents. All the other aspects of the game, although revolutionary at the time, have in most cases been largely improved apon and are a bit silly to go on about as some sort of special feature, except for the music which is phenomenal. The level design is another huge aspect too. Sewers and underground dwellings, secret labs, night clubs, offices, it's all very interesting and cleverly interconnected. The story, although excellent in hindsight, is a bit heavy and it isn't required that you understand half of it to enjoy the game. The gameplay is pretty ruthless but ultimately it serves to add weight and moments of relief/reward that would otherwise be lacking in a run out a kill everything (and be awesome) kind of game. I think the gaming industry made a BIG mistake not making a seroor study of this game and using it to help make better games. The problem is that it's not popular enough because most people judge it on face value for what they hope/expect it to be without giving it a chance to see how good it ultimately is.

One thing I still remember nearly a quarter century later is how in my efforts to see it all, I had killed an NPC and moved on, only to later have someone ask me to refrain from killing his staff in the future. This was at a time where consequences for your actions just wasn't really a thing in games, even today it's not so much a thing aside from locking out quests. Also the speech about how the wealthy are fighting a class war partly through regressive taxes (eg, you pay a higher rate than any billiionaire has) was an unexpected truthbomb.

There are two ways to design a game like this. Option A: Design combat, and then side activities. Option B: Design tools, and design obstacles. Deus Ex is B. And I love it for that fact. I positively adore the utility items in this game. The armours, the grenades, the lockpicks, the multitools, the icebreaker and so on. The LAM is a HE grenade, it is also a mine, and also a breaching charge. When I replay the game I will lean even harder into demolitions and environmental training. And try to use the riot prod more, fantastic little weapon. Perhaps I can figure out the crossbow as well. Nifty little thing.
@varun49293 жыл бұрын
Immersive sims really are the most underrated. I think one of the reasons this is the case is because of the marketing for immersive sims. in my opinion there is no real way to market an immersive or rather do it in a way which attract a lot of people. Thats because of the nature and gameplay philosophy of immersive sims. They are more about personal unique scenarios that are created by the player's own actions. They are very less scripted sequences in them. They are more about the individual experience of the player how we can engineer any possible scenario by using the game's system. Thats why its hard to make a trailer for it too. Something as heavily scripted and linear as the modern COD or any other "Blockbuster" game can easily be marketed. All you have to do is to insert the most flashy cinematic scripted set piece and BOOM, you made a trailer that would catch anyone's eye. Such a thing cannot be done for games like this. Thats one of the reasons why Prey was so poorly sold. That game is so deep both in its Gameplay as well as its narrative. But it just cannot be marketed in a proper way. oh well, really nice video tho as always :)

Invisible war we all know was a big meh, i still beat it tho. But man the first game, it was something special. There is something so engrossing and immersive with the way its built. I adored every bit, and that super robocop unstoppable feeling you build up to is incredible. Big fan of the series now, just started Human revolution and cant wait to see it unfold, the start was great. Heres hoping this series can live on somehow in the future, the right way.

I started with the original game so I am a bit biased, but now that you have played all the main entries, which one is your favorite? You can take gameplay, storyline, lore & immersion, graphics & animation, and music & sound into account or just focus on a single or a couple of aspects. It probably speaks a lot about myself but my favorite is still the original. I admit that HR and MD tried a lore more to create a 20 minutes in the future/cyberpunk setting, but I feel that some of the 'playfulness' of the original got lost. It felt like the designers back then just wanted to have as much fun as possible with various conspiracies of which augmentation was just one. Mixing all of these conspiracy ideas that have been going on in the American public's mind (I am Dutch but I am familiar with some conspiracy theories), that especially became popular topics of discussion when shows like the Ex Files aired. There is just such a tonal shift when Eidos Montreal takes over after the disappointment that was Deus Ex Invisible War. Deus Ex perhaps 'grew' up but it lost a lot of the color that I liked. Sure the original is pretty basic looking, even then, but the world feels so much bigger.

Mainly because of this video, I picked up Deus Ex. This game is a blast to play. I thought going in it would be too complicated for me to get a play style going, but just about everything I do in it feels gratifying. It’s that approach to game design where I find my own solution. The way I bounced off System Shock 2 made me think I didn’t get it, but Deus Ex understands how to make a fun game with rewarding mechanics.

One thing I really love and respect about the first game is that it isn't some partisan hack take on politics. There are characters from many different parts of the political spectrum, some who are clearly more unethical than others, but all of them have valid reasons for thinking the way they do. The game lets you make up your own opinions from each exchange of dialogue rather than spoon-feeding the player.

Well here I am pretty much year later probably like a 50th person mentioning it, but if you headshot with poison darts, it will knock regular soldiers right away. Either way, love that there are still folks recommending this absolute master piece.

"*me remebering encountering a rare soflock glitch on my 1st playthrough, where paul refuses to talk to you before an apartment raid*" jokes aside, this game is good even without the memes

Actually, the memes are the worst part of this community since all of them have long since gone stale.

The video "Unatco" that has Delay Lama singing this game's soundtrack is what made me start playing it not so long ago and the menu music made me stay.

It was my third or fourth attempt to play this it finally clicked. Well worth it. Take the GEP gun and hold onto your ammo, you're gonna need it!

I only played the very beginning of the game so I don’t know much about it, but it gives me major Matrix, Blade movie vibes (late 90’s early 2000’s)

I am eagerly, EAGERLY waiting for the day that you do a video on Pathologic and it’s sequel. It’s trafficking in so many intriguing and literary ideas that I think your take on it would be interesting.

Went back listening to this i'm reminded about game dungeon review on Deus Ex. I think ross talks about what you wanted to talk about. How things like tax rates, unemployment rate, consolidation, etc are real things but they aren't from a secret society. That would be cool. It's more like a ruling class. Talking about who a rich person pays lobbyist who lobby politicians to get certain rules or laws changed so the company rich person owns or is associated with can make more money. That politician gets re-elected because they got the money and the cycles loops around.

Nice coincidence, I have started my first playthrough of the original Deus Ex this year. Already completed both Adam Jensen games several times in the past, they are very good as well. Yesterday had eavesdropping session on two ladies talking in the nightclub, found it very interesting, and I think it illustrates how deep this game goes with its ideological ramblings: CHARLOTTE Human life was valuable only in one sense. Suddenly any person was a unit of labor in the factory system, roughly equivalent to all others, and was therefore a transferable resource. ANNETTE It was the greatest age this planet has ever seen. The age of invention, of self-reliance, of the individual artist. CHARLOTTE And transferable resources must be free to move about, in response to market forces. That's "freedom." Now that most people don't produce anything of value -- ANNETTE We're talking about the inherent worth of an individual, not economic utility. CHARLOTTE Now that only a few people create wealth -- the scientists, engineers, bankers, and so on -- we require an arrangement of the few over the inert mass the rest of us have become. ANNETTE A nation's government does not have to bow down beneath economic laws. CHARLOTTE That is where we differ. I believe the evolution is always in that direction.
