Grocery store fish is poor quality and expensive! Text "FISH" to 833-207-9578 to receive updates the next time Cam is selling fresh Daily Catch fish.
/ cambocharters
If you've eaten fish fingers, fast food fish sandwiches, fish and chips, cheap sushi, or fish balls, then you've definitely eaten this fish before. The Atlantic Pollock is a groundfish prevalent in the North Atlantic. It's mild in flavor, flaky in texture, and incredibly versatile, making it a very popular candidate for food processing. Due to it's similarity to Cod and Haddock, many states don't regulate recreational fishing for them in hopes that anglers would target Pollock instead. In the state of Massachusetts there's a 19" size limit with no limit to how many you can keep. In today's video we went out in early January on a mission to locate these Pollock, but were surprised to find Environmental Police and Sharks waiting for us!

Filet-o-fish is actually made with Alaskan Pollock, not Atlantic Pollock. Alaskan Pollock is more closely related to Atlantic Cod and has similar mild tasting, lean, white flesh. Atlantic Pollock on the other hand has slightly stronger tasting, slightly darker, oilier flesh.

Atlantic Pollock-Polalachius pollachius is just called pollock around UK. Pollachius virens is known as Coalfish or Saithe . They are definitely not the same species, Pollock have a longer lower Jaw, and taste slightly lighter, Coley has a strong flavour and darker coloured flesh. Fresh pollock from a bigger fish, 7lb + is well worth eating, the small ones tend towards wateriness and I don't bother with them. Shark ! Porbeagle ? You don't need expensive jigs to fish for Pollock, just lead and a string of White Cod feathers ( fish 3). We used to make our pirks (jigs) from scrap chrome tube filled with lead, no frills just cut off at 45° top and bottom drilled and split rings, treble on the bottom with an orange florescent (road tape) teaser.

Hi, I can understand that@@Fourfingerssixtoes Hi, I can understand that. As a child going fishing with my dad, the old boys down the harbour did not call most species by their correct name. i.e. pollock, whiting, coley were just similar looking fish that were put under the umbrella of "whiting". I think in those days they were just more interested in eating it rather than what it was really called. We dont get any of the skates in our water's, or very rarely, but the 5 common species of rays were just called "skate".

Removed my comment from last time, figured out what's at play here eventually. Went on fishbase and saw that P. pollachius isn't native to US waters, so for them it's no big loss to call the one Pollachius species they got, P. virens, "pollock". For us that have both pollachius species, it seems silly to name them both the same thing, so the most common way to go about it in English speaking countries is to call P. pollachius "pollack" and P. virens "coalfish" or "saithe". So my original comment saying they refer to both species as "pollock" in the US was wrong. There also seems to be a difference between pollock and pollack. Pollock is the typical US spelling and refers to saithe, and pollack is the typical European spelling and refers to lythe. Turns out there is sense to it after all haha.
