As Sam said, I like the "tools not to buy" idea, "worst tools I've bought," "tools you've bought and never used twice." October time is when people may start thinking about Christmas gifts -- either for a woodworker to make, or to buy for one. If you're going to make something for the Mrs. then show us that. I was thinking of making a luxury loo seat for big arses after checking out a video on early thunderboxes. And/or a sewing box for her, with trays and stuff. Have a dream of making a bent wood computer seat, with swivel base. And a cigar box with cedar inlay. Or I'll get her a box of milk-tray like every other year.

Hi Ben it's great to see that you have both the biscuit jointer and the Domino machines at your disposal. Could you perform a joint test in say 18mm, 3/4" thick chipboard, MFC, ply or MDF on a common easy 90 degree corner joint for typical simple cabinet construction. Obviously on bigger jobs thicker material the length of the larger Domino has an advantage, but it would be fun to see how smaller panel joints in the face side of common sheet materials compare in a brake test. 6mm and/or 8mm diameter dowels, number 20 biscuits and 20mm wide Domino loose tenons. Fully glued as in a proper job and also the speed of the machining time cycle as that may be a factor. Cheers Tony

I don't understand why people always talk about having more surface area to glue for holding power on a domino. Dominos are best used for alignment and facing rather than providing structural integrity to a joint. Sure, it can provide some structural benefits, but if you have your joints properly cut so the faces are touching all the way through the joint, the glue between the pieces are more than enough to keep the piece together, the wood is going to break before the joint will. The most useful thing about the domino joiner is the fact that it makes alignment and facing quick, easy, and reliable on your joints, especially on flat projects like tables. Having the face already aligned and flat means less processing after the glue dries. So you get your pieces together quicker, you have to do less processing of the face afterward, and that equals time and money. Otherwise, all this stuff about it providing strength doesn't really provide any value to the tool. What makes the tool valuable is speed at which you can operate, the amount of post processing you can negate, and the reliable repeatability in the work.

Thank you Michael, I wouldn’t think twice about it just buy! Regarding mitre saws imo it’s a two horse race the Bosch glide or the kapex 120, the kapex wins cause of the better dust extraction, 3 years free servicing and insurance against theft.

I have the 700 as I like to build entry doors and need the Mr Ed size dominos, I built a new house and built my entry door with the 700, I built it 42" wide x 96" tall x 2-1/4" thick out of sapele, really happy with the way it came out, so the 700 and the robland x31 almost makes a complete shop, but I ended up buying a 25" oliver planer and a 16" oliver jointer, both with Byrd cutterheads and will be setting up a new shop this coming year if all works out. Anyway, love what you do. Thank you

As for the Domino at the moment I don't have one but I can see me buying one the next time I need one and it will be the BIG BOY HaHa. At present I have a mortising machine that gets used once in a blue moon so I can see that going up for sale soon so I can gain some floor space and a deposit on the domino 🙂

If you are doing plywood boxes the 500 is more than enough. If you are doing structural joinery the 700 is much easier to use. But how many people are doing structural joinery?

I have both machines too, agree completely that the df700 is a better engineered machine, i especially like the index pins, the ones on the 500 always seem clumsy, in the way with multiple holes and the wrong center distance. The weight of the big one remains an issue though when using for longer sessions

Regarding content I enjoy your build videos the most but appreciate that it’s not always possible to produce a build vid once a week. Perhaps a vid explaining your thoughts about design and where your ideas and inspiration come from. How about another hand tools vid but this time on hand planes.

I have the 700 and I mainly use it for thicker materials like 1.25" or thicker. But every now and then I'd like to use it for 3/4" (19mm) material and have thought about trying to use the 8mm cutter. Anyone ever had any problems with this? I know the standard go to size for that thickness is 5mm or 6mm, but I'd rather not have to buy the adapter and everything if I don't really need to, and can just use the 8mm cutter that already fits on the 700. The points you made about the depth of cut on the 700 vs the 500 is the exact reason I chose the 700 as well.

It's going to be cost versus usage volume question perhaps: sure you could get a 500 and it'd be good - but do you do it often enough to justify the purchase (or does it make you money/save you enough time to warrant the purchase)?

Yes but for cabinets with say 19mm carcasses you’ll need that attachments I mention to uses the 500 cutters.

Disagree. There's base plates you can attach to the 700 to get the same 10mm spacing as the 500. You have more range with depth adjustments. Ergonomically better and stable. All the 500 accessories are interchangeable with the 700. More options for the onboard spacer pins that are easier to use. And you don't have to stop the machine for switching gears to make a wider mortise. 500 you do it running only, 700 doesn't care. There's probably more, but off top of my head....

If you are doing furniture you can still use the 500 just stagger the mortise in terms of height if you need 4 domino joints just have two of them at different heights.

Hi Ben. Size matters, long and thin goes too far in, short and thick does the trick. Correct me if I'm wrong. Is this specified in the Domino sales literature? I think it's horses for courses depending on what you are joining together, full stop. Thats why you have two at your disposal. I would also have two too. As for the Domino's setting in the middle, I always work from a face side it's more accurate even if it specified central. Love that you mentioned the biscuit jointer, that's my favourite trusted jointing power tool. Sorry Domino supporters everywhere lol. Tony

Great video… wish I had seen this before I went out and got the 500…. Don’t get me wrong great bit of kit…. But I keep hitting projects that length and width is important…. Well that’s what the boss says… so having to double stack…. Also read loads about issues with warranty if you fit the tool to the 700 that allows you to use the smaller bits…. All in all should have gone for the 700….

In my humble* opinion - Someone is in the wrong game if they're using the big dominos for 'joinery' work (note that joinery work doesn't mean putting bits of sheet material together) If you're needing a joint hefty and strong enough to think about using a DF700 then you should be looking at a proper mortise and tenon joint, bridle joint etc. or something that isn't comprimised by a floating tenon or glue that misbehaves/degrades. I see that festool have a demo video of using a DF700 to make a door which could only be regarded as utter trash. I've got a DF500 for knock-together furniture, non-structural stuff, locating parts and generally things that are meant to be cheap and cheerful/rapid prototyping - they've got their uses but joinery machines they are not. For the the price of a DF700 go out and buy a multico tenoner on ebay. Also, I've never had to buy bags of pre-cut dominos for my DF500 - they're easy enough to make accurately with the right size stock and a roundover bit, and Whitehill make cutters especially for producing dominos [*not so humble]

We’re all entitled to our opinions. I disagree though, I made a solid oak gates that are about 4” thick they’re damn heavy and have done two winters and to heat waves and are still solid as the day I made them. It comes down to the right amount of tenons and the right choice of glue. You also get more surface area than a standard tenon as you have to use say 6 of them for a gate like that. And to say a maker is a lesser man if he uses one is a bit insulting fella.

@@HewAndAwe I'm still not convinced - afterall theres good reasons why any major joinery firm still spends tens of thousands of quid on very smart tenoning machines to make windows and doors etc. Just have a look at Vertongen tenoners and the like - I'm sure said firms would prefer to save a few quid and amount of time simply buying dominos if it was a reasonable alternative. But i certainly wasn't calling any man a cuck for using a domino - I'm just a bit old fashioned and believe a strong mechanical joint is preferable. I've restored countless 100+ year old sliding sash windows with wedged tenons - most of them as good as the day they were made long after the glue has given up the ghost due to the mechancially-locking nature of a wedged tenon. But yep - there are certainly modern-day shortcuts. But modern life is rubbish in many ways

i have both domino machines the 500 and 700 the 500 is not well designed ergonomically, difficult to push the start button and hold down, on this point alone , i would buy the 700, especially for longer use periods the 500 with the seneca domiplate is used with the 500 upside down, i find this unbalanced and hate it the 700 has a lovely handle and easy to reach start switch the 500 depth cut must be divided by 2 the 700 depth cut is what is actual set and you can see it visually the 700 has 6 setting pins, the 500 has 2 when cutting ,using the machines base as a reference the 700 has more surface area , helps stabiltiy with the semeca adaptor fitted the 700 can work on smaller pieces, its a more comprehensive machine i always fit the biggest domino i can , stronger joint, so 700 is ideal cutting with the 700 seems to take a lot less effort, more mass behind the cutter, stronger machine the 500 has three settings for tightness of mortice, the 700 has two, the latter is less liable to error let me assure you, these settings should only be changed with the machine running
