Monofilament versus fluorocarbon leader line...it's the great debate!
I bet if you asked a group of anglers at a boat ramp which leader line is more abrasion resistant, they'd say fluorocarbon.
WHY?
Because it's always been advertised as such and people believe it.
But has anyone really tested it against monofilament?
In this video, you'll see the ultimate abrasion test between mono and fluoro!
Which leader material do you use?
Are you thinking about switching now?

Mono is my go to line along with braid. I got some fluorocarbon cause everybody was saying how good it was so i spooled it up for a trip and didn’t have any problems with it until i went on trip #2 with the fluoro. My knots kept breaking because of how bad fluoro cuts into itself so i had to learn new knots and take more time tying, mirco fractures kept appearing and it just got shredded even with just a few sticks touching it. Then i switched to mono where i didn’t have to worry as much about the knots. I learned the hard way that a polomar knot hates fluorocarbon but really loves mono.

Not only better abrasion resistance but I find using monofilament leader with my braided main line that I lose less fish to break off at the leader. When I was using fluorocarbon I would actually break them off because there was no stretch in either line. Monofilament has just enough stretch on a 18 inch leader that it prevents that break off but you still have good overall sensitivity.

I really had my doubts and I’m sure they have probably never tested it against their CXX copoly. I’d love to see you test a bunch of different brands of monos and copolys of similar diameters. @@saltymojo3277 Sunline is the #1 known fluorocarbon on the market in the bass world. I myself won’t use floro but I’d figure their monos pretty good. Some of these companies cheat by making a bigger diameter line and rate it low in test to make it look stronger by poundage. Only true test is matching diameters. What the poundage says on the label means absolutely nothing. I actually used a micrometer to match lines when I tested. That was many years ago and a lot of newer stuff is on the market now.

Great video as always. I love the testing setups you devise. I'd suggest changing the test so each line has the same number of trials. Looking at the results you have, the two trials with the Ande Mono vs the Seaguar, the mono broke much quicker than it did in the first set against the Berkley. HEAVY MATH WARNING!! I'm admittedly a bit of a math nerd so I looked at the Mean, Median, Mode, and Standard Deviation of the number of passes it took each to break. Since we have more data for the Ande Mono, the margin of error should be smaller (though I did not calculate it). None of the trials had an exact number of passes repeated so there is no Mode. Ande Mono had a Mean of 25.75 passes and a Median of 25.5 (As an aside, when mean and median are close it indicates that the data is not skewed, therefore likely more consistent) and a Standard Deviation of 5.31 passes. Berkley Vanish had a Mean of 24.5 and a Median of 24.5 (expected to be the same with only 2 data points so no indication of skewness) and a Standard Deviation of 0.5 passes. Seaguar had a Mean of 14.5, a Median of 14.5, and a Standard Deviation of 0.5 passes. If we consider a normal range to be 2 standard deviations from the median (we could use mean but it would only affect the Mono in this case), the Ande Mono should break somewhere between 15 passes (rounded from 14.88) and 36 passes (rounded from 36.12). Berkley Vanish should break between 23 passes (23.5 calculated) and 26 passes (25.5 calculated). Seaguar should break between 13 passes (13.5 calculated) and 16 passes (15.5 calculated). My take would be, Mono is the clear winner but the low end of the expected range still covers the entire range of both Fluoro lines. If you really want to use a Fluoro leader, the Berkley Vanish seems like it would give much better performance than Seaguar. With more data, we might find the Berkley performance is similar to the Ande. Of course, if Mono is an option, the reduced cost of Mono makes this a no-brainer! Any chance you could redo this test with an equal number of trials for each line type?

What about Berkley Professional Tournament grade gold label? Ive had great luck in the past with Berkley Professional on baitcast, but not spinning because it is a little stiff. It's a little harder to tie and tougher to trim up tag ends without clippers. I agree with the Vanish & Seaguar lines not being up to the strength/abrasion, yet they are very easy handling and smooth casting to me. I've switched back to Berkley Big Game for topshot/leader here lately. I appreciate all the testing that y'all do.

A few people have already mentioned the heat/friction variable, the other variable that I think is missing here is abrasion resistance under load. Monofilament stretches much more under tension than fluoro, using a 2.5 lb weight as in this set up mimics fishing with only 2.5 lbs of drag force. If you're fishing for big snook or near wrecks and reefs you may have significantly more drag pressure. Would be interested to see the results with 40-50 lb fluoro with a 10-15 lb weight.
@diegotobar6839
@diegotobar6839 2 жыл бұрын
This exactly what I was thinking. I use mono because of the stretch which is more forgiving when it come to where your drag is set. You don't need to be spot on with your drag when using mono. It'll be interesting to see what this test would look like if both lines were pulled tighter i.e higher drag pressure.

@@Saltstrong I’d like to see 20 lb copoly vs 65 lb braid which are both the most common sizes used in heavy cover bass fishing situations like frogging and flipping. Both situations where abrasion is a big factor. You’d never see anyone with much experience using 20 lb braid in those applications and they also wouldn’t be using 65 lb copoly so equal poundage isn’t really a good test.

Out here on the west coast fishing the kelp patties most fishermen swear by fishing braid with flurocarbon leader’s. They call this “Kelp Cutters”. I told them about your tests with these lines and they refuse to believe it. I’ve been fishing Berkley Trilene green big game out here since 1990. I never changed to braid with flurocarbon or mono leaders. The only time I’ve been broken off is by a shark or a large yellow tail that wrapped around the anchor. I catch more fish with mono than these other set ups fished right next to me and I save money and use a palomar knot to a live bait hook. It’s marketing. I back my reels with braid as a way to increase my line capacity without having to resort to a giant reel. It did help pull in a 20lbs yellowtail out of kelp at Catalina. I thought I had a giant yellow as I had cut the kelp and brought back a small patty with my yellowtail in it. I do however topshot all of them with 50 -100yrds of mono because I like the line to give a little (stretch). Without this little bit of give in the line your drag needs to be set dead on or back off a little so that you don't snap you line. With mono, from my short experience fishing, you have more flexibility with your drag settings. That being said, I do add 18-20 inches of floro leader because, admittedly, I've heard it is more invisible underwater but I refuse to use straight braid to floro.

It almost spooled me. I got it to the boat several times and it took off. The last time I got it near it took me to the bow and managed to wrap around the anchor and broke off. This is very interesting, however I feel you may have overlooked 1 think. Mono is much more absorbent then fluoro, and my have an affect the lines performance.

Do Ande mono vs Berkeley Big Game. Knots and abrasion tests. I think that $10 1/4 pound spool will beat it.

I think my P-Line CXX EXTra Strong will beat both of those if they’re all equal diameter. I’ve used a lot of Big Game but never Ande. I wouldn’t ever buy a small spool of leader line but if their big normal line spools beat my line I’d give it a test of my own and might make a switch. I’m not a leader angler. I want the least knots as possible between me and the fish.

Great test thanks. I use fluorocarbon because it has the same refractive light index as water. It's invisible under water. But that's one myth exploded for me. Thanks

I stopped using monofilament and went to braid and fluorocarbon. I also tried copolomer line. After a year with those I went back to monofilament. It works better on a baitcaster in my experience. The best thing is that I have more money for other gear. Thank you for your test. You are the main reason I went back to monofilament.

Has anyone done abrasion resistance test on a bulk spool of mono vs the stuff that's on those little "mono leader" spools? By the way, I've tried more than my fair share of fishing lines, and I always end up going back to good old fashioned Stren Original.

Great scientific test to uncover the facts. Which would be more abrasion resistant, 30 lb mono or 40 lb fluoro?

Depends on the brand and thickness of the diameter of the lines. If it were our choice, we'd go with the 30lb Monofilament

Stretching effect. The mono stretches while fluro doesn't. This may give the mono an edge when being weighed down. What about having a test with both lines not being weighed down?

I was going to say something similar.. what about a test involving trying to find a standardized way to apply it over a sharp blade and see which one snaps first, but a lot of people are saying, through experience, that fluoro has no great advantages

When you attempt your visibility test, please remember to test the Floro after its been pulled. That's when floro looses its magic invisibility. Be it tightening a knot on each end or pulling it off a snag. Floro sucks...

I didn’t need this test… I learned this lesson the old fashion way: by losing Snook after Snook with Fluoro. Now I use nothing but mono and guess what? No more break offs.

Agreed. I bought into the hype about flouro until it break off even from casting my lure. That was the final nail. Went back to mono after using braid for several years. Braid is strong by on rocks and pilings it get cut too easily. Mono is going to be all I use now and I love it.

Don’t drink the floro kool-aid. Even the manufacturers say it’s the best and try to push it off on us. I’ve had them tell me it’s their most abrasion resistant line and I’m almost 100% positive they’ve never even tested it themselves. I guess they make a bigger profit off of it. They need to watch this vid. I spooled that expensive crap on my reels and within a week using it daily it ended up in the trash. It doesn’t even handle as well as copoly or mono.

ANDE mono is my go-to leader line, but this test is kinda pointless. Blue Label is soft so that it knots well; of course it's not abrasion resistant. If you want abrasion resistant fluoro, get Red Label or another hard line. Just know that they make garbage knots and have a ton of memory. I have zero fluoro in my box or bag, and won't ever pay that premium again, but I will admit that NOTHING knots like Blue Label.

Very interesting indeed. One thing that comes to my mind is friction heat. This test is in air, not in water. Water is conducting heat caused by the friction much better than air. Just wondering if that would make a difference. But very interesting test! Keep up the interesting work! Paulo

I think you've stumbled on to something a lot bigger than a simple misconception here. Considering the sheer amount of money tackle companies make off of fluoro, and the fact that abrasion resistance is always front and center with fluorocarbon's marketing, and with fluorocarbon's popularity among pro anglers, I think that this is far, FAR bigger than you realize. This is no mere misconception, this is a massive scandal waiting to happen, with potentially industry-wide effects. This info needs to be broadcast to every angler around the world, this info needs to be brought to the pros who are sponsored by these big tackle companies, and many MANY questions need to be asked. Because if we've been lied to about fluorocarbon, what else have we been lied to about?

Another test that proves mono is stronger when dry, on sandpaper and inside a temperature controlled room. I just dont see the point unless the lines are wet. Have you lot done any tests out in the field where conditions are realistic? I fish rocks constantly and the difference between mono thats been dragged over the rocks vs flouro isnt even close. The mono is always more shredded. I got sick of losing stripers on mono, switched to flouro and never looked back.
@GabooNx
@GabooNx 2 жыл бұрын
Could you somehow mark the area in which the line is being tested? Mono has more stretch, in the Theory more area is being exposed to sandpaper? Versus floro which has less stretch and therefore the abrasive area is more focused and cuts the line faster? I fish a rocky river and mono doesn’t last nears as long as a smaller diameter floro, and braid doesn’t stand a chance.

You need to perform the test after both lines are soaked in water. Mono (Nylon 610) absorbs water....Flouro does not. Once Mono Gets waterlogged....It looses abrasion resistance. The real test in application will be wet.

If you regularly fish in gin clear water, flouro can make a difference. But if you fish in darker water like the back waters of estuaries, you’re better off with mono. And if you target big snook in dark water, like around spillways, in my experience nothing beats Mason’s hard mono
