I’d argue that Clefable is a sleeper in the original games, especially with the special stat apply to both special attack and special defence. A wide move pool makes it relevant throughout the whole game and useful come the elite 4.

Challenge Accepted. Will update on how it goes. I used cheats to get them all at the start so I can use them as much as possible. Hope that doesn't disqualify me lol. Update: I did it. I had to get the whole team up to lv 60 before taking on the league. Yes, I used the required Movesets. Slurp the Golbat Astro the Clefable Megamind the Alakazam Nope the Onyx Dude the Polywrath This the Magneton Final thoughts: Really wasn't that hard imo. Even with Onyx, I wasn't significantly challenged. Golbat was probably the worst in my team, actually. It wasn't a hard hitter at all - couldn't one shot anything besides low leveled Pokemon. Who was the best? Probably Clefable. With such a colorful moveset, it could stand against pretty much anything. This was fun. I am willing to try the gen 2 team.

I have actually used this team before. For context: My father, brother, and I played Pokémon Red and Blue when it first came out. I got Charmander on my first playthrough and beat the game with just that Pokémon...You all know we did one Pokémon runs at some point, usually unintentionally. But at the end of the day I wanted to get my own Pokémon and go on a full adventure. But I didn't want to just play with another Charmander and instead, I traded my starter to my dad after I beat brock (I think it was a Squirtle) so I could go catch my first real Pokémon using one my dad traded for my Squirtle (I think it was a Sandshrew he gave me). I caught a Zubat first, named it 'Flappers' I think, and then sought out an Onix for a good two or three hours because that was (and still is) my favorite Pokémon...I ended up calling it 'Pebbles' and moving on. I ended up catching a Clefairy too, just because that was something I knew evolved via moon stone and my dad likely needed one, but when I asked if he had it he said he did so I kept Peeps (It reminded me of the candy, what can I say?). The choice for Abra was one of spite as it teleported and I wanted it, so I kept trying (wasted so many balls) and ended up catching and switch-training it until it evolved and wrecked shop as a Kadabra before I learned I had to trade it through a strategy guide and begged my dad to trade me it to and from his game as I didn't trust my older brother to not try and keep my Pokémon. I remember I called him 'Houdini' after my dad called it a little Houdini after he had issues catching one. I also remember this was the name as I asked my dad to spell it for me as I didn't know how to spell the name. Poliwag was just a first catch with the Good Rod after I got it in Fuchsia City, really just RNG, and I named it 'Frogger' as I expected it to become a frog as it was a 'Tadpole' Pokémon. Magnemite was the last one I got at the Power Plant as I thought it was cool and I wanted it. I named it 'Ohm' not realizing the significance of the name due to my father having an Ohm Meter. I just knew at the time it was meant to measure something with electricity (which I know now is for electric resistances, but hey). Wish I still had the team. I traded my team into Generation 2 due to the Time Capsule, not wanting to leave them behind, but they would eventually be erased due to a dead save battery.

I used to use Clefable in ALL of my Gen 1-4 playthroughs where I could as a kid, because I didn’t know STAB was a thing that existed. So once I used one and saw it could learn almost all of the TMs I booted up, I assumed it was one of the best and most versatile Pokémon in the game.

"This team will more than likely not be able to get through the game with any sort of ease" I mean I like the idea of this team and some of these Pokemon I personally have never used and don't know someone who did, but that statement kinda felt forgotten as soon as the whole team was dropped. Sure it'll be an annoying start but as soon as you get your Abra to level 16 before Misty there is nothing that will stop this from being easy. In fact you can evolve Kadabra right away as Alakazam still learns moves just as fine so from there on the only "tough" part is putting the team together and end the run.
@alexchongz3

You could try doing a Google form or something (like FlygonHG doing community posts for his snaplockes) for future videos like the Johto one down the line, and then say "which is the top 8/9/10 (etc.) most forgettable Pokemon for you?" as a community post question. Then we fill out forms. Then you choose the 6 with the most votes, because most of us would never use these, which is overall more accurate. BTW: Just beat Blaine 10 min ago. Clefable's actually nutty good-it's actually 6% encounter rate in Mt. Moon bottom floor, Normal STAB is GOATed, fast exp. rate makes a huge huge difference. It's kinda funny to see amazing pokes like Clefable and Alakazam next to stinkers like Golbat and Onix. I think Poliwag's pretty good because all Water-types are good. Gen 1's the gen with really bad move distribution-we see this with Golbat, who doesn't get a STAB move above 35 base power-so the fact that every Water-type can get Surf and Ice Beam/Blizzard makes them all at least usable. Of interest also is the traded Poliwag in Japanese Blue who gets the outsider exp. bonus so can reach high levels super fast

It’s been so long since I played Gen 1, I kind of use the Gen 3 or 7 remakes as they’re more readily available. 1. You’re right; there are better Flying and/or Poison types. The Pidgey and Spearow lines are available for longer and the Doduo line’s more aggressive than both. There are a ton of Poison types in Kanto, but their primary use is for defense. Pokémon like the Tentacool line are surprisingly good in Gen 1 because it has 100 Base Speed and 120 Base Special when fully evolved. 2. It’s hard to justify using the Clefairy line when it’s level up moves early on are really bad. The kings of Normal types in Kanto are Tauros and Snorlax, but they kind of show up later than I would like. Meowth/Persian might be a fun way to mix-up the next Kanto run. As for the Gen 7 remakes, I have eyes set on Vulpix/Ninetails (Alola). It’s available shortly before the fourth Gym. 3. I’ve never used Onix in Gen 1 or its remakes, but I can recommend it in Johto. I usually pick up Diglett/Dugtrio shortly before the 3rd gym to easily deal with it. 4. Alakazam is the powerhouse Special Attacker in Gen 1. Drowzee/Hypno was kind of my go-to since it was discount Alakazam, but other Psychic types like Exeggcute/Exeggutor or Starmie have some fun moves to take advantage of. 5. Oddly enough, Poliwhirl sees more use than Wrath because it has a higher base speed. Gyarados and Vaporeon may have been the go-tos, but I still say the Tentacool line is kind of underrated. There are worse Water types like Goldeen/Seaking, Krabby/Kingler, or Seel/Dewgong. 6. Almost all Electric types can learn Thunder Wave/Bolt naturally or through TM, so I’d probably choose whatever’s convenient (like Pikachu) or faster/hits harder (like Jolteon).

Well, I haven't played original RGB, but in Fire Red I've used Onix, Golbat, Clefable and Alakazam. To be honest, only Onix was a pokemon I choosed to normal run (because Brock have one and it's cool-looking rock snake), Golbat and Clefable was in monotype runs (and Clefable with Snorlax were my MVPs as Normal-type Expert) and Alakazam I get in Randomizer Nuzlocke, but it haven't finished this challange.

Whenever I do a playthrough of an old Pokemon game, I make it a point to use monsters I've never ever used before. Believe it or not, I ended up with a team very similar to this, albeit it was in Leaf Green instead of true Gen 1. I believe the two differences were Parasect instead of Alakazam, and Raichu instead of Magneton. It was actually a not half bad run, from what I remember. Parasect was obviously the weakest point of the team, but I made it work.

So, after experimenting on this team proposed by Mystic, I have established my opinions: 1. Alakazam is extra good with Recover and Seismic Toss (Yes, Abra can learn Seismic Toss) 2. I have more respect for Onix, originally I already liked it, especially since it matches up well against Agatha (Ghost is physical in Gen 1) 3. Golbat is very good at stopping the Dragons with Gen 1 Psychic-move bait mechanics, Golbat is an all rounder in this team. (I personally felt like Poliwrath is really hard to use, even though I don't like Gen 1 Golbat) 4. X Accuracy Thunder 5. Clefable is actually a decent bulky pokemon, but it doesn't hit hard at all, even with super effective moves barring 4x, evident with Hyper Beam Dragonairs doing 60% while Clefable can only two shot them. 6. I think any maze is hard for me in this particular Pokemon experience. Rock Tunnel and Seafoam Islands especially. Mount Moon, Victory Road and (Spirit?) Tower are also annoying with their Zubats, Machops and Gastlys without repels.

I have a penchant for playing through Pokemon games multiple times while trying not to use the same team members too often. As such, I've used quite the variety of team members over the years. I've also been working to use every fully-evolved Pokemon in a solo run. Here's my history with each Pokemon listed here: Golbat: I've used Crobat a couple times (Gold, Emerald, Pearl), but never a Golbat. I'll be doing a Blue solo run with it soon, though. Clefable: I've used this twice so far (Diamond, Shining Pearl), but never in Kanto, ironically. Should be interesting soloing Y version with it. Alakazam: I've used this one (Crystal) and Kadabra (FireRed, LeafGreen) a few times between them, but never Alakazam in Kanto. I'm sure it will destroy X and Sun just fine, though. Onix: I've actually used an Onix in LeafGreen before. It... wasn't a good time. Never actually used a Steelix until recently though (HeartGold).I'll be soloing Red with it, as well as X and Omega Ruby with Steelix. Poliwrath: I've never used a Poliwrath at all. Politoed twice (Crystal, HeartGold), but not Wrath. I'll be soloing X and Y with Politoed and Poliwrath respectively. Magneton: I've used this in Red version, but I made the rookie mistake of only having Thunder as it's Electric move, having put Thunderbolt on Raticate. I'll be returning to it in a Blue solo run though.

Unusual pokemon i used as a kid before the internet barely existed and there was no online stat readings and tips, but really just the game itself and whatever pokemon you liked to use, i used Sandslash and Raticate a lot in my teams and i actually also used golbat relatively often, sure i mostly used pidgeot but sometimes i ran with both simply because i thought that golbat had a cool name and design, a big vampire bat. I also sometimes used Venomoth.

Me sitting over here crying because my main go to flyer was Fearow. Loved that drill peck. I was always too frustrated with how long it took to evolve to Pidgeot. I'll admit I never really ran Clefable. Mostly because Clefairy was never that great at battling. I was very much the type of person who didn't appreciate status such as Sing and wanted something that hit hard. I had Kadabra, but never had an Alakazam as you've said. I just got to listen for years about how overpowered it was. I tried Onix once thinking I'd have an awesome Pokemon, and then was left in confusion when everything that hit special seemed to wipe it out in one hit and then when Onix did get a hit in even ten levels higher than the Pokemon it was against it barely did enough to bruise. I actually did like Poliwrath, but I've always preferred Gyarados or Vaporeon for my Gen 1 water type. I think it suffered from the same thing as Flareon where they're like "Yeah, let's make a physical attacker...from a Pokemon whose type is special!" I've never played with a Politode for the same reason I never bothered with Alakazam. Along with Electrode I'll say Magneton was one of my least used electric types of Gen 1. Love it now of course. All in all I'd say an interesting concept of a team. I only have Yellow, but I'm still going to give it a try.

Clefairy and Kadabra are two of my Pokemon Yellow staples. Though including an Alakazam makes it near-literally impossible for me to ever use the team exactly as described for Gen 1 because of how hard it was to trade with people back then....let alone if my Yellow cartridge still works I doubt I could somehow find people now to trade back-and-forth with.

Clafairy and Abra were rare encounters, but I know people went after them a lot when I was a kid. Better to replace both of them with Chansey and scyther from the safari zone, both because they're rare and really hard to catch, and Scyther's high crit rate actually makes it less good in gen 1 since crits would ignore it's swords dance builds. You'd double up on flying, but you could always replace Golbat with Muk or Weezing

I think finding someone who kept Onix on their team for any meaningful amount of time in gen 1 is gonna be the gotchya for this list. I knew people who loved Poliwrath, and Clefable and had them on their team. And Alakazam is a staple on many teams... regardless on how it was obtained. And I loved Magneton when I was much younger. But I didn't know anyone who liked Golbat.

I feel called out because I know for a fact that all of them have been on my teams back in the day. Probably not exactly the team shown here because my starter was always on my team. But Golbat was there. I loved Clefable and Wigglytuff and had at least one of them with me. Sandslash was my ground Pokemon because even young me realized that Onix can't kill anything on it's own. I had nobody to trade with, so Kadabra or Haunter have also been high contender. And Poliwrath was something I even used in later generations. So yeah... While not exactly this team, I have to report that I had teams like this constantly as a kid just because I liked them. This also predates the time where you had easy access to guides and I was too young to do the numbers crunching myself. (Or didn't care enough. Probably that as well) And the guides I had access to, mainly from magazines, have also been of questionable quality looking back. Some other "allstars" I liked back in the day were Parasect, Persian, Golduck and Arbok... And yes, Bruno has been an issue for me more often than not with whatever bullshit team I had at the time.

Never had any of the guides back then and no other friends knew either. I had Butterfree still on the team though, that little bug put in all the work and was where my Psychic TM went as I’m sure it did for a lot of other people. But I thought Clefavle was magic/alien (anime), Golbat because cool, Onix because cool and reminded me of Brock, Poliwrath because I really loved poliwag back in the day and always tried to have his line in my team, and Magneton because I thought there was a rivalry between the Magnemite and Diglet lines and my friend had a dugtrio. The alakazam is the only one I didn’t have but it definitely looks like a cool team! Great video!
