I personally think that the pestilence is hate because when 049 "zombifies" somebody, he cures them of their hate, but also cures them of their mind, so I guess that could be a side effect. It also explains why 049 sensed no traces of pestilence in 999, a being of pure joy, and found 682 incredibly pestilent.

what if the "pestilence" is the fear of death? my theory is that he becomes hostile to people who fear death, which is why he isnt aggressive to the staff members of the scp-foundation because theyre literally dealing with creatures that has god-knows-what powers that can destroy earth. which means they are not afraid of death
