I can understand second Russian, which is my best second language since early childhood. I can understand German, which I started learning at school. My third language is English, which I never learned or spoke until I moved to Ireland for work at the age of 34. On my first day, I understood some Irish too clearly for anyone to believe that I had never been exposed to English before... Something magical happened that day. English is my third language, which I can understand from natives, but not all dialects of it.

Wow, that's fascinating! How did you understand some Irish on your first day without ever being exposed to English before? Did the languages have some similarities that helped?

@@hunji._ When I was young, I lived in the Soviet Union. When I was 16-17 years old, they started showing over-translated American movies in Russian. These movies were illegally over-translated, and there was still the original sound of English. The English sounded mostly under the Russian and sometimes in between. I was watching movies and I didn't realize that my brain was getting a new language, but I understood that moment only a few months ago.

@@hunji._ Understanding some Irish and speaking English without grammar for many years while living in Ireland... Before four months from now I realize that I have grammar of English. For me, grammar means that I can now check how to use a word correctly in a sentence. Before, I couldn't have done a test where I had to choose the correct variant of a few words to use in a sentence. Now I can.
@hunji._7 ай бұрын
That's so fascinating! It's interesting how our brains can absorb information even when we're not actively trying to learn. The double exposure to English through those movies must have been a powerful language learning tool, even if you weren't consciously aware of it. It's amazing how much you were able to understand intuitively before consciously learning the rules.

@@hunji._ I read about language learning. Child speaks first word in his mother tongue and then under the control of parents (mostly) he needs up to 7 years until he goes to school to make this base of language in his long term memory and school he learns these grammar rules which has built on these words. Before rules he needs meaning of words... With second language this process goes faster instead of 7 years child need up to 1-2 years. I forgot how to learn any of my leanguage in childhood, but this how to have written teory about languages. With English I did not have the meaning of the words. This was my problem. I do not know what is the crucial aspect of my work of learning to give my mind this meaning of English words. I have been speaking broken English for many years. The problem for many learners is new, unfamiliar words in the language. My mind was empty of English words. I am not sure how that happened, and another person will do the same thing I did with a language that has only sounds in my head. Reading books is good for engraving this meaning of words in the brain.

Hi! In my experience, the most important factor was finding someone who created a smooth and natural communication vibe, someone I genuinely enjoyed talking to. This naturally helped me speak more fluently, even with a limited vocabulary. I received some help along the way, and it pushed me to pick up new words organically within the context of our conversations. Talking to myself wasn't very effective for me; I personally needed the interaction with another person. For this, I trained myself to grasp new words/sentence structures by myself with the following way. >> The way I practiced my speaking skills was like this. I used to transcribe everything said in the video, repeating each sentence after I heard it, no matter how easy/difficult the sentence is. I tried to mimic them, checked some new phrasal verbs/words/expressions, and looked up the meaning of them. I was sometimes able to practice only 5 sentences for like 30 minutes to1 hour as my vocab and listening skills were not good enough so it took some time to master even 1 sentence. I enjoyed this whole process though, cause I was just enjoying myself speaking English itself. With this way, I could naturally acquire the correct and right way to say the sentences.

컨텐츠는 예를 들어서 Ellen talk show, Marie Forleo, Mel Robbins 채널을 봤어요. 배우고 싶은 표현이 나오는 영상, 내 관심 분야를 얘기하는 영상을 활용했다고 생각하면 됩니다 :)

Hi! It's totally normal to feel stuck sometimes when you're learning a new language. There are a few things I can suggest that might help. Just focus on speaking and writing what you can. Don't worry about perfect grammar at first, just get your ideas out there You want to find ways to make learning fun and practice speaking (preferably by literally talking to someone) every single day, even if it's just for a short time. There's more I can tell you about this journey. But, anyway, remember, achieving your goals takes time and practice. Don't get discouraged please. Keep at it. You can definitely do this. I totally relate to you and am now rooting for you! If you need any more help, you can DM me or send me an email :)

Hi Hunji🙏I am from bangladesh. Nowadays i am trying to give 7 hours to learn english. In this 7 hour's.... I am trying to 1)read at least 1 hour. 2) learn vocab or idiom for 1hour. 3)writting 1hour 4) practising 2 hours and 5)listening 2 hours But the problem is that when i try to explain something after 1/2 miniute i can't explain continuosly. I think i should change my routine. coz probably it's not working😓 Give me some tips....How can i amplify my language skill?
@hunji._7 ай бұрын
Hi! 7 hours a day sounds very impressive! More likely it's per week, but either way, that's a lot of dedication. What do you do for “4) practicing for 2 hours”? Since you're already dedicating an hour to writing practice, I'd suggest talking to “real people” (instead of texting). This will help you get used to speaking spontaneously and explaining things on the fly. Talking to yourself can feel somewhat unnatural, and it might hold you back from expressing yourself freely. When you have someone interested in what you're explaining, the conversation flows more smoothly and naturally. This will help you train yourself to talk at length about topics you're passionate about. This is just my suggestion based on my own experience!
