OK so I had a sick sesh. the waves were totally fun. I bombed down them. big. powerful. awesome. and my GoPro made it look so vanilla. this isn't like a random thing. it happens all the time. it's annoying. its's comical. it is what it is. but for it to make large fun waves look so insignificant… it's frustrating. so I'm talking it out. a little Pt.J geography sprinkled in. I'm still stoked from this sesh.
gear ridden this sesh:
75L v1 Armie FG board
HA580 foil
795 HM mast, 10 in track
60 fuse
140 dart stab (red & blue shims)
4.5m v3 F-One STRIKE wing
5:4 Mahulu Stormrider wetsuit
Kaohi double coil grip leash & padded belt
Solite 8mm Custom 2.0 booties

I have to laugh when someone says it's 3' Hawaiian and then pulls into an overhead barrel. Even when the buoys are measuring 6' there may be 10' faces from trough to peak. In the end it doesn't really matter though. The fact that you hit 27+ mph tells me all I need to know. That 580 must have been a dream in those conditions. Cheers bro

@OCEANBOUND1 3 ай бұрын
lol when he said that I was like maybe he meant meters? cause the buoy was reading about 3.3m at the time. but nope, they don't hype over there. it's funny. and yeah, the 580 loves speed! this was my first time doing the 140 dart, I was a little worried it would be to tweaky but it wasn't, especially at speed. I'm stoked on that setup. need more vert! co'mon big waves I'm ready for you!! thanks Rob, I wish you an awesome weekend!

I believe ya man, swell looked epic! and what a great setup, love how winging forces the change of perspective on spots. The wave height scale is so random and subjective, and throw in open ocean swell compared to breaking waves at the beach, well its all different. I think we should really look for a new scale/formula for this sport which we could use for comparison.
@OCEANBOUND1

thanks bud! this place is pretty sweet to ride big waves, I accidentally edited the part out where I talk about how easy the launch is... you launch and in 30 seconds you can be safely riding a giant. and I'm all down with standardizing the scale... especially because this sport regularly crosses multiple genres or areas of waves (breaks and ocean). prolly won't happen but I wish it would! we tend to look at the nearby buoys for some added reference that are more out in the open ocean and they measure peak to trough. so at least after a sesh I can have a little validation that we were getting certain heights, but there's no help from the GoPro. lol. thanks again and I wish you an awesome weekend!

The struggle is real. Gopro will David Copperfield those waves every time. I gave up mentioning anything about wave size. I went out on too many 2 foot days and grabbed waves I could not see over. Most my friends, that live an hour away in either direction, would laugh at me when I told them about the waves I caught. It is priceless to see their faces when they come to visit my beach and get destroyed by a wave on a 2 foot day. I don't mess with an onboard Gopro until it is breaking hard for every reason you mention. Only in breaking waves does the Gopro start to match expectations. It still falls short. 🤙

Looks like fun! The GoPro has the wide angle lens so I know exactly what you mean, when you say it affects the size of the wave in video footage. However, I see your friends in the background next to the waves, I can tell it was a huuuuge day! It looks awesome. One option for you is to use a mount that pushes the gopro away from you with a long extender arm that allows you to toggle down the POV from super wide to wide or even to linear. Or try attaching the gopro to your wing's nose or tail somehow.

Thanks bud! I promise it was a big day. So fast ripping down those faces, so much fun! And the spot is really special. I guess I accidentally cut out a part that explained how the launch is super easy… right in the corner with the break wall starts. So you go from flatness to big waves… such a sweet setup when that happens! Thanks bud, I wish you an awesome week!

I have been using an Insta360 with a selfie stick connected to the back of my back handle and sewed a loop at the tail of my wings to let the 4' selfie stick through (pretty easy to sew that loop that near to the tail of the strut). What I have found is that the angle being low really shows the wave heights better (even the knee to waist high stuff I am riding). But I am not riding the with the wing flagged out much, so it will likely mess with that and makes flagging the wing a bit wonky with the extra weight in the back. But man the angles are like a drone is chasing your wing and you get a lot of great shots of the foil and your riding style. If you get a chance, experiment with something like that. The editing software for the Insta360 is pretty easy to use. It could be better, but wasn't the nightmare I thought it would be with editing 360 footage.

thanks for this! I'm def curious about the insta360, but not stoked to have something added to my workflow. I know it's just a culture shift I'd get used to, but there's a little trepidation there. good to hear you don' think it's that big of a barrier. I think I'd use it exactly how you mention. also super hesitant cause they don't have good floats for them. it's one easy reason to stay with GP cause their floats and bite mounts work well. but everything else about them looks rad. the new x4 looks sick! thanks bud, sorry for the delay in responding and I wish you an awesome weekend!!

When we first got into rope less wake foiling we watched all the vids online .None of us could figure out how everyone was riding the micro wake the boats put out without a tow line. It wasn't until later filming that we relized the ski boats had a really large wake but the GOPRO effect was making it look like a ripple .

Hey mate! Totally agree that the GoPro is a real wave killer. I had a session in 35(55) mph winds (NUKING), last week which created big waves (considering I surf in sweden) and when I came home and edited the video it looks as you mention totally flat. Knowing this, I can see in your video that your waves are actually pretty huge! I had the Max 2.0 lens which I think kills the waves even more... I wonder if a solution could be to have a lower angle on the GoPro, mounted forward / or backwards on the board.. But how fun footage is that. Anyways, as always - nice to watch your videos! =)

Thanks bud! I used to shoot in 1080 but once I switched to 4K I feel like things aren’t as wide so since I’ve been curious on that max lens. I suppose if I shoot in linear it may make it better, but I kinda need the super wide view on my hand cam. This day was just worst cases scenario with the fog and the lighting. I just and another wave sesh in totally different light and I feel like it looks bigger. At least it’s more interesting. Stoked you were rocking out in 35! The sea is angry at those winds! I used to have a 2.8m but my new rule is if I can’t hold down the 3.5m then it’s prolly to cray to be out. I’ll keep an eye out for a video on that! I watched yr last one 😜👊 I wish you an awesome week ahead bud!

On hte handwing, I see you were on the F-one. I have one and like it a lot. Were your friends liking the newest Black and White Armstrong hand wings?
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 2 ай бұрын
sup bud! yeah sounds like the NZ crew are similar to the Hawaii crew when it comes to wave height. we just don't get the big swell more than a few times a year, so our ability to act cool and reduce the wave height below our frothing stoke levels is nearly impossible. I still try to keep it real and accurate, but with the GP footage, well I just don't have proof in my pocket to really back it up. I do love F-One wings. I was frustrated in the excessive weights of last years line in the trailing edges and how it sucks for drifting, especially in light winds. but it made me adapt how I hold the wing while on a wave (dragging it behind me), so that's positive a result. I now know I prefer light drifty wings with decent performance, so I'm eyeing the Armstrong XPS. waiting to try a new Swing before I make any decisions, I think they are similar weights. cost is a factor too, and the XPS simply costs less. and lastly, I don't want to look like I've sold out on Armie stuff, I really enjoy having multiple brands but I'm really riding what I prefer to ride, buy all of this stuff outright, so if I gravitate to all Armie it's cause it checks all my boxes and suits my style of riding. my NZ friend loves them! but he does have a connection with them too. thanks bud, I wish you an awesome weekend!!

That looks like a great day anyway! Are there any non-wide-angle action cameras available? I had a Kodak Playsport ZX5 years ago that wasn't wide angle and I preferred it to the gopro for filming people around me. The video quality is nothing like today's gopros, wondering if there is something equivalent.

Yes! I had one of those Kodak Playsports and they took great wave pics! The pics actually represented the size of the waves accurately. I agree that the camera market needs a waterproof action camera that isn't wide angle.
@DaveSails7
@DaveSails7 3 ай бұрын
@@jeromesurffoil7033 I went back and watched some of the videos from the playsport. Quality wasn't bad actually! I usually had it either mounted on my kite filming down, or set up on a tripod in shallow water filming kite sessions. Neither of those would work well with Go Pro because you need to be too close to the camera to see anything. There's used ones still available on ebay for around $30. I think I might pick one up! Just remember to lock the waterproof door, that's how I killed mine haha
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 3 ай бұрын
yeah there def are. I've kinda entrenched myself in the gopro ecosystem, mostly cause they have the best mounts and floats. but I can set them to 3 or 4 different angles of wide-ness, I just happen to go super-wide cause it's the best way to see more of what I'm doing when I'm holding my camera in my hand. the best way to get non-wide angle is to have a drone flying intern on the team. now accepting applications. I gave up using a GoPro because of the wave killing effect. Not worth the hassle of filming and editing only to see micro waves. And even though I know you were on 10 foot faces, it would be much more interesting to see video that looked like 10 foot faces rather than me trying to re-edit in my mind. I watch your videos for your commentary, not your footage because the GoPro simply does not do it justice...I literally skip over the winging footage most of the time just to hear your thoughts. Sorry bud, but the GoPro is soul killing for the footage. I hope you find an alternative solution. But otherwise, I'm happy just to listen to you.
