it's been a long trip everyone. I have not really covered this, but over the last few months I've had 20 sessions where I've worked to paddle up on to foil on the flatwater with my Armstrong DW board and foils. I haven't fully committed, but steadily working on it while there wasn't much wind. this sport is quite annoying because the progress has been slow, but it's cumulative and things seemed to have turned a corner recently. I couldn't be more stoked. on the flats I've been using the 1675, but it's so big and annoying and I feel like that new HA1180 has got to be an easier ride, at least once I'm up. I tried paddling it up the other day without success. so is this foil gonna work?!? I bought it dreaming of using it to glide from bump to bump, hovering for miles in a downwind direction. I just need to get it up on foil, so I took it out on a small wave day at Nahant to see what it's like, and I ended up getting so much more than I was hoping for! I got the bug. this video is fresh, this stuff is real, I''m stoked to do more. so good. things are finally connecting!
gear ridden this sesh:
107L Armstrong DW board
HA1180 foil
795 HM mast, 11 in track
60 fuse
220 Glide stab (blue shim)
XL SprintX Black Project Paddle
5:4 Mahulu Stormrider wetsuit
Kaohi double coil grip leash & padded belt
Solite 8mm Custom 2.0 booties

all good bud! stoked the footage came out, I also saved the clip of me doing it on the Ocean House cam. and yeah, the 5:4 is getting a little toasty but I just keep flushing it and the cold water makes my shoulder feel good so not the worst. hope to see you out there on the lineup more!

Two big wins, congrats! From my experience if you can paddle that hard while on foil you're way to low on the mast. I reall focus on getting that front wing just below the surface. Pumping becomes 200% easier with almost no mast in the water. Smaller tails on the flat water practice seem to help a lot with breaking that stall allowing the nose to come down easier so you dont fall forward on takeoff.

Thanks so much bud! 🙏 awesome tips here, I’ve been trying to pay attention to riding higher this past weekend. It’s hard to stop paddling! But slowly getting better or more comfortable with the pump. I just watched a video where it inspired me to use smaller tails. Kinda counter intuitive in my mind but finally making sense. I’m gonna try that this weekend. Thanks again for the tips bud, really excited to continue to work on this stuff further. I wish you an awesome weekend!!

hahaha sorry David! it's been a journey. I was going to commit 100% to the dw baords starting in January and then I got the new HAs and I've spent a ton of time on them with my 75L FG board cause that gives me the most satisfying sessions. but it's pretty sweet how you can downsize wings - I'm def thinking a 6m is the biggest thing I care to be on from here on out. even that seems big! paddling has been the biggest challenge for me! and I have a long way to go but nice to get some wins after 20 sessions of trying. I hope all is well in your world... I wish you an awesome rest of your weekend!

Try putting your front foot in a foot strap. It helps you pump a little harder without loosing your balance.
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 2 ай бұрын
Oh man I wish I could! These V1 Armie boards come with not inserts… straps denied!! I 100% think that would help, although the straps on my wing board both make me a more solid rider, but they are kinda cheating at the same time. Thus, I’m relearning balance and whatnot with no straps. It’s a trip. Appreciate the advice, and I wish you an awesome day!!

Sweet bud! Don’t be discouraged if the progress is slow, it’s cumulative. But I hope you get it quicker than me! I wasn’t trying super hard this winter but I kept finding I had so much to work on every time I was out there. But the more time I’ve been putting in lately the quicker I’m seeing progress. Heading out today with low expectations, a lot of stoke, and crossed fingers! I wish you an awesome weekend bud!

hahaha I didn't mean to make it look easy, I counted 21 sessions of paddling, mostly on the flat, to get here. it's not easy, and I'm nowhere near where I want to be, so much left to do. but it was great to be able to document this milestone. still stoked and I'm looking forward more conditions like this. hahaha thanks so much bud! and fingers crossed Armstrong notices some day 🤞 my Armstrong journey has been totally self-funded and I'm really low on funds these days! I wish you luck on the APF. I'm not trying to hide my struggles on that. it's been 20 sessions over 6 months and I'm finally getting up on the flat. the more you work on it the faster it will come. and I hope to god you have the skills to get up in a fraction of the time it took me, but if not, enjoy the ride. so much to learn here. again, thanks and I wish you an awesome day!!

@oceanbound Oh man, that was amazing! So stoked for you. I had the same success today, with my 1180. Such a lovely foil. After some frustrating and regretful Armstrong purchases, I've finally found a wing I like, I sold my APF 1675 for the same reasons you mentioned, It was so damn slow, hard to balance blah blah blah. My third session with my 1180 and I pumped a few longish runs in flat water, with some assistance from the fold drive. I know it's cheating but who cares what the purists think? I'm having fun! :D Can't wait for some clean waves to come through!
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 2 ай бұрын
yeayyy! thanks so much bud! stoked you are happy with the 1180. I look forward to the day I can get rid of the 1675, once I'm good enough to paddle up the 1180 on the flat, I'd say it's time. I tried it again in waves yesterday and it's so damn awkward. but blew my mind how slow it could go on foil. the 1180 just feels so much more intuitive. I'm hoping to get out on it again today or tomorrow, fingers crossed for some cleaner conditions I want more connections! thanks again, and I wish you an awesome day!

You're killing it! DW boards are not easy to paddle (or rather balance on) and don't pump as well as a prone board. Flatwater paddle ups are way beyond my pay grade. Keep at it!
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 2 ай бұрын
yeah yr telling me! I think I'm decent at balance and then I head out in the chop and it all goes to sh!t. and my technique kinda goes out the window in the messy stuff, so it just makes me realize how much practice I still need to do and benefit from flatwater. it seems to me that it's like 35% gear and the rest technique and skill. but I'm sure you can get it, it just takes time. like a month ago I couldn't do more than like 8-10 strokes at full speed. that's changing a little every session. thanks for the comment and continual support and I wish you an awesome day!

@@OCEANBOUND1 i’ve been to a handful of flatwater clinics that Gwen put on in Florida. He says it’s about 50% paddling and 50% leg pump. It is worth it to try bracing with your paddle and trying to get forward momentum with just your legs. I did about 10 sessions in the gorge last summer. By far the hardest thing was just standing up and getting in balance well enough to get decent paddle strokes in.

Niiice! That 1675 is a beast. I’m at a similar point on my flat water paddle ups and recently tried sending a 5 mile DW run. Let’s just say it was a long 2.5 hours. 😂 I felt like the foil was making up its own mind. Not a feeling I like coming off the 580 winging 😂😂 I’ve yet to take the SUP to the ocean waves. Making it look easy!
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 2 ай бұрын
it's a beast!! I don't even want to spend a ton of time on it, I wish I could skip to the 1180 but I still have work to do on the 1675. I almost did a dw run today but conditions aren't really ideal. I know the first few will be similar to yours but I'm eager to rip that Band-Aid off! def try the dw for SUP waves! I sold my old foil SUP and never looking back. it's a little more of a challenge for balance but you can work through it and def a better paddler! btw just about to pull the trigger on a 75L ML. stoked. I wish you an awesome day!!

Shorter masts def help with flat water paddle/pump ups. 60-75cm are ideal, anything above makes it quite a bit harder.

Nice Rides! You give me hope :) Did you make your board Handle (what parts) or did you pruchase it? Thanks for posting your whole Kit (good to know)
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 2 ай бұрын
thanks so much bud!! and for that handle, I used a plastic handle that is for a kayak that has a strap on either side, and I had a bunch of extra gopro ties that you get with the surfboard mounts. I wrapped the handle in grip tape cause it was loud bumping on the board, honestly it didn't really help much. next version I will prolly only use a wide strap vs a handle with hard plastic. I only need it for getting out and so it can be pretty minimal. I told Roy from Kaohi he should make one, I hope they come out with one!

Impressive. What happened to your drone operator? Would like to see the conditions you're riding. Are those waves breaking over a sandbar, or shorebreak? How long can you ride before hitting bottom?
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 2 ай бұрын
thanks bud! and lol, my drone driver lives on Cape Cod so I gotta drive down there to get any footage. always looking for local drone flying interns :P Nahant is a special place, the floor is super gradual and not really any sand bars, but some places are slightly more shallow than others creating small differences in the way the waves break at different tides. but in general they just slowly build up and break. the smaller they are, the closer they break. I usually don't go out when it's less than 2 ft cause as soon as you get up you are kinda in the danger zone for grounding. but the dw board seems to let me catch them a little farther out so that may open up sessions for me if I can reliably get up earlier. pretty stoked to play with this. just stoked to be here, even though I have so much to work on. I wish you an awesome weekend Aquaman!!
