I went to Afghanistan recently and I saw a lot of women working. You are probably talking about the Saudi controlled Taliban 1.0. Women are not so free but they are not prisoners either. The markets were full of women shoppers, buying and selling clothes accessories, jewelry and what not at prices that I thought were too expensive. Also I learnt that though they wear drab burkas, the Afghan National dress is composed of bright multicolor blends of ribbons, beads, embroidery etc which the Taliban most certainly cannot ban. Men are banned from wearing brightly colored national clothes but they can wear any color in western clothes. Afghan women wore Burkas long before the Taliban, it is their tradition since centuries. 60's and 70's Kabul had liberal women but the rest of Afghanistan was ultra conservative as it is. To these women Taliban and none Taliban government does not make a difference. When I asked about girls school ban, they said that the Taliban government needed funds for the teachers and the previous government officials swept the banks and stole cash from the country. Afghans seemed to be happy because finally they are free from the fear of drone bombings, night raids by American soldiers and harassment by government officials asking for exorbitant sums in bribes in each and every department. But most agree that schools for girls is a necessary and the taliban government has promised them that the ban is temporary but they have set no date.
