I almost watched Evangelion with my parents. When it came out on Netflix I watched the first few episodes in the living room and they popped in every once in a while to see what was up. I never got to anything bad (I still don't know too much about the show) but I stopped because I thought "the original must be better. I'll wait and watch that." From what I can tell, I dodged a bullet
