Good vlog however, a tad biased. There a lot of typical Spanish restaurants and small bars all around where you were. You have covered a few hundred yards on the headland area, there a lot that cover tapas, and Spanish style food (maybe slightly westernised) however they large and when you see locals and Spanish tourists eating there, it is a sign of good food. They are very close to where you were, and in the Bastion area and Cucharas area (the other end of the sandy beach from where you were). It's a balancing act for the country, no tourists no economy, no economy means no locals looking for accommodation, they would look to leave for work and life experiences.

Lanzarote is a fabulous island that only has three main holiday resorts. Leave them to the people that like that sort of thing, and travel all over the rest of this beautiful island. Not only the capital Arrecife but many, many other inland and coastal towns and villages cater for Spanish people with fabulous local food. In fact in quite a few places you may struggle if you dont speak a little Spanish. Try the sociadads if you want cheap authentic food. Every village has one. Please dont put people off coming to Lanzarote by only describing the resorts. Get in the car and explore this amazing island.

To a one, they wanted to avoid the kind of holiday you describe. It takes all sorts. The point is, wherever you are and whatever you like, people who live and work here shouldn't be made to feel like strangers in their homes.

@@Isobel-el3ye As you suggest, Granada is hardly Malaga, Marbella or Lanzarote. A totally different type of customer looking for a totally different experience. The Spanish themselves should have put a block on allowing their resorts to be overwhelmed by the non Spanish takeover. A bit late to bleat about it now. Also worth remembering the many of these tourists will be coming from northern European cities which in parts feel more like Kabul, Islamabad, İstanbul or Delhi where they too feel like strangers in their own lands.

It's a purpose built tourist town catering to the British sector. But without visiting those restaurants when they are open, you don't know they aren't Spanish owned. I expect the owner of the block, the landlord is Spanish. Without tourism these places would be deserted.

I went to Lanzarote in the early 1990s, 2-week stay. Puerto del Carmen. Found it was full of Brits and even more Germans (great cakes in their cafes). I did like it, and Fuerteventura was a lot windier. Timanfaya National Park volcanoes are amazing. Great point re the restaurants.

First time in Lanzarote was 40+ years ago. It was beautiful, last time there was over 20 years ago and haven’t been there since. The bars and restaurants in Puerto Del Carmen were mainly Spanish with the odd Irish bar,but that wasn’t bad. Nearly bought a two bed bungalow opposite the San Antonio Hotel for the then £16k ,garden, built in bbq, shared pool. First time there the airport terminal was no bigger than a detached bungalow with flights from the UK only on a Thursday. Sad ,but they call it progress! I call it destroying a beautiful island. The Peseta was currency with a 1000 being £5.

Yes, I was in Costa Teguise a few years ago. Not to my taste but each to their own. However, a trip in the Yellow Submarine (if it's still operating) was a great experience. Understandably pricey because of the essential safety precautions they have to provide but worth the expense in my opinion. The installations by César Manrique to the north are fabulous. That is an unforgettable experience. If you're ever in Lanzarote, to miss that would be a massive error. It made up for an otherwise pretty dull sojourn on the island. I'm not a great fan of the Canaries in general but I could be tempted back to Lanzarote just to visit the César Manrique site. I'd choose a different location though.

Costa Teguise is a deliberately designed tourist town, as a two more Lanzarote towns. Nothing to complain about really, because that’s where the jobs come from. Also, take a lesson - tourists come and go, whereas immigrants will come instead, not go, and have lots of children. The Cuidad are just (finally) beginning to build much needed accommodation for locals.

Stu, I am guilty for travelling to Lanzarote over the years.. but one thing I always do is to respect the Island and the Spanish ways... In Puerto del Carmen it is common for business to own more than one restaurant and the business targets UK/Irish customers. The last couple of times I have been to PDC I'm hearing lots of different accents French/Norwegian/Swedish as well, so business is good for restaurants and hotels but I will say that they don't pay their staff well enough and that's sad because they work very hard and are always kind and helpful so I always tip that bit more.. I hope you enjoy your stay in the most beautiful island of Lanzarote, the local are very amazing...

Hola Stuart, I really can see the point here in this video. It is, in fact a type of colonisation when the British (German, Dutch are in part guilty too) enclaves pop up in the Costas/Lanzarote. We have visited Lanzarote several times: firstly when our daughters were small some 15 years ago. My neighbour at the time made a negative comment when I mentioned we were doing a package stay in a villa attached to a resort (called it 'Lanza-grotty). We found the Island to be a wonderful stay as we visited the Timanfaya and ate away from the most touristy areas. Very fond memories of our visits to Lanzarote. I have some art by Cesar Manrique we bought while there. I wonder if he were still alive if he would be active in the preservation of the Island's cultural and envronmental capital? No doubt he would. Gracias Tony p.s. No full English for me ;-)

Consider also the fact that most of these hotels and developments are made by people from other countries, like for example the UK or Germany, and they export all the profits out of Spain. Corporate Income tax is 25% in Spain, but within canary islands special zone (ZEC) most of them have a reduced corporate tax rate of 4%

I have not been to lanza in 15 years, but loved its ruggedness when I was there and it seemed to have great controls over the types of buildings you could develop , mostly being white washed houses together with volcanic rock. Cleary maybe that has changed. I did not spend time in the more tourist area on Lanza, but did on other canary islands and some felt just destroyed by mass tourism. As for the wind, I went to windsurf, so loved it!

Wow a forceful political message. A few thoughts. Cheap air travel is changing the dynamics. Fact : the Columbians have overtaken the Brits in terms of inward migration. Birds of a feather flock together. In PDC we saw many signs on businesses saying we love tourists. Some of the hotels are monstrosities despite the efforts of Cesar Manrique to limit their height and scale. The landscape is striking the locals we encountered are friendly. Without tourism what have they got? We struggled to find local cuisine. Love it and wish we were still part of EU.

Hi Stuart I lived on Lanzarote for a few years until 2011. You are right the 3 main resorts cater mainly to the Brits, Irish, some German and a few Scandinavian places. I used to eat out in Arrecife and Puerto Calero where locals would eat very late in the summer. I've seen families turn up at midnight in the summer months! I guess supply and demand. Currently looking after a friend's villa in the mountains near the Canadian town if San Miguel on Tenerife. Ate locally and great cheap food. Went to Los Cristanos today and it's again catering very much for the Brits. The one local seafood place had a long line waiting for free tables.

Agree with you that tourism has been allowed to ruin the structure and atmosphere of the Canaries and many other European holiday destinations plus the decimation of local businesses with the proliferation of all inclusive hotels. Local councils also need to take their share of the blame for granting planning permission allowing the expansion of English themed outlets at the expense of their traditional restaurants and bars.

Enjoyed your vlog, the majority of customers in that part of Lanzarote are English speakers, many businesses are also owned by English speakers. Similar conditions exist in the UK when the majority are not English, some areas everything written in Arabic script. When we moved to Spain, we found that, beyond the cruise terminal, Santa Cruz de Tenerife remains distinctly Spanish. Living here requires speaking Spanish, unlike the more popular areas in the south of Tenerife, where English is predominantly spoken. Sad in many ways but the British/Germans bring money to an area that otherwise would be poorer.

I think it's important to know wwhat proportion of workers are Spanish and how many are British. If all the businesses are run and owned wholly by British people then I think you can claim some form of Colonisation. However, if Spanish people are employed in the majority I don't see a problem. If the businesses catered wholly for Spanish people would they come to Lanzarote? I think they would stay on mainland Spain and visit the coastal resorts on offer there. Why travel if you have what you want on your own doorstep? The Brits come in big numbers because they want to escape to some good weather. 😉

No point in going abroad if you just want what you have at home. I am a long term resident in Tenerife and I am totally fed up with the British who holiday here. Fortunately we have a large number of Spanish holiday makers to our town so everything’s in is in Spanish first. A lot has still been ruined by developments and many origin buildings lost. The British who have made their homes here largely speak Spanish and get involved in Spanish cultural activities. The locals make us very welcome. However sheer numbers have made life very difficult for our small town and we no longer go to some fiestas as the people crush makes them very unpleasant. A way had to be found that balances all these pressures cultural and financial.

We used to go to Puerto del Carmen - there were lots of Spanish restaurants and shops selling a variety of things made locally like traditional crafts. Now these have all gone - from what I see online PDC is now just a strip of fast food joints with big shiny stores like Sketchers. Who goes to Spain to buy Sketchers! The Spanishness has gone. I agree with you totally. The seafront of PB looks Canarian but they are 90% owned by the Chinese. Did you know that? We love authentic Canarian establishments and hunt them out. Why has the local governments allowed this to happen? No need to name call the tourists, the English signage etc The governments are accountable for every British sign you see! Not the brits! But I’m the same, I hate going to anything typical Brits style whilst there. P.S we also pay tax for when our house is empty! And there is the Canarian IGIC tax, where does all the money go?!?! I’ve only been going numerous times over 20 years so what do I know? All inclusive ruined the place, instead of independent restaurants we have ‘chain restaurants’ same food same same same etc

We visited fir a week last year, in a great hitel, the Radisson Blu. Loved the hotel but found the town a bit souless. Enjoyed going into Arricife and touring the island, but dusappointed with the resort.

It is very sad to see such an anglicised Spanish resort - must be quite an odd experience for tourists too. Not for me 😢

Stuart, I totally agree with all your comments that you've made👍 no wonder all the locals are pissed off😡 the Brits are taking over, like you said about all the signs that are in English on the menu, which should be in Spanish first and English second, great vlog I'm sure your partner was not impressed. Keep up the good work, mate👍🇪🇸

Stuart, if you down 2 km.s down the road or to Arrecife it’s all in 100% Spanish with much cheaper prices. Po Lice are VERY corrupt!

Was in Gibraltar on Thursday. It is just an encampment of British. Its an anachronism. Although the workforce are Spanish and cross the border daily. Noone would notice if we gave it back to Spain, but M&S might go. 😊

I agree with your comments Stu, English pubs and restaurants as far as the eye can see, bloody awful, no wonder the locals feel angry and marginalised. Went to Lanzarote once, never again, the mainland ever since

Why can’t the government set zones for residential and holiday makers? Costa Teguise was purpose built as a resort.

It’s too bad that tourists want to see their own country when traveling. It should be about experiencing other cultures when you travel. 😢

Hi Stuart We all like different things but I would never go to Costa Teguise or Puerto Del Carmen. Old men with their tops off and a great fat belly isn’t for me. Lanzarote has lots of traditional Spanish villages restaurants and bars. In Arrecife you have a beautiful area called Charco de San Gines but unless restrictions aren’t put in place it will be spoiled. Surely the blame lies with the people who issue the licenses in the first place. Love your sarcastic comments by the way. Stewart

I was in that exact place this last November. You don't hear Spanish spoken at all, prices are very high and the food is uniformly terrible.

Nothing unusual about menus and signage in the language of the clientele. In my area (US PNW) I know of places that cater to Chinese and Vietnamese speakers. English menus are usually available, though.

It actually is. And you're clearly lying or being ignorant about those Chinese and Vietnamese places having menus in their respective languages only. That's just doesn't exist in the US.

@paradoxparade1 Bilingual menus are more common, but as I wrote, there are places with menus on the table in one language. Perhaps you've never been to a place in a heavily ethnic neighborhood that didn't seek business from outsiders.

The industry they have is tourism full stop which is very demanding, but dictated by trends. In all of the canaries they are catering for there market that puts food on the table, if they try and keep locals happy they will suffer think the canaries need to be realistic. Hotels are very dated in some islands big lack of investment and they they will quickly price themselves out of the market. I say that I went to Thailand with my family post Xmas 2 adults 2 children 14 days less than price in Tenerife. Be careful what you wish for Spain especially the canaries welcome the brits as we are called !

Very interesting video Stuart. Thank you. I love Lanzarote and I was lucky that the last time I was in Costa Teguise, I found a really nice Spanish bar right close to the beach. The owners were extremely friendly and made me very, very welcome. I was pleased with myself for not going into any bar or restaurant that wasn't Spanish in every respect. If I wanted an English bar and breakfast, I could have stayed at home and gone to Brighton. If you get time, check out some of the amazing sights created by the architect Cesar Manrique. They will blow your mind. 😀👍
