The advantage of taxing people more for the amount their cars pollute is that it will push car manufacturers further to make their cars pollute less and will reserve luxury sport cars for the very affluent people
@camdened1234566 жыл бұрын
While not a popular opinion amongst car people, these taxes are really needed. You're in a very dense city encolosed by a border with malaysia and the sea. If more people had cars you'd have gridlock. You can see that traffic moves fairly well, the reliance on public transport means that they have lots of money to make it very effective and the lower traffic levels mean that people who need cars, emergency services, trademen etc. won't have a problem using the roads. Sucks if you want a Prosche though.

Don`t forget Indonesia and Malaysia too, although car prices there is not as expensive as in Singapore, it`s still comfortably going to cost the buyer to buy a car here 2 or 3 times as much as the price of the car in the US, and the situations aren`t better for bikes with engine capacity bigger than 250cc too, a bike that has an engine size above 250cc would also get Luxury Vehicle tax here in Indonesia which could cost 100 to 200 % of the price of the bike, to give you an example a BMW S1000RR in Indonesia cost as near as no different USD$100k yup that`s one hundred thousand United States Dollar, and that`s also the price for most new Harley Davidson`s, BMW Motorrad`s, Kawasaki H2, Ducati`s , MV Agusta`s and so on. Yup to make it simple, if you are a petrolhead, any kind of petrol head wheether it is carguys/girls or biker guys/girls and have a taste to buy the fastest or the most exciting sportscar/supercar/luxury car or even bikes then you are out of luck here where you will probably need an monthly income of $200 thousand dollar to satisified your need and for a good measure your monthly salary needs to be at least twice or 5 times that of the cars/bikes you want to buy. Yup you need need to be a multi-millionaire first before you could financially think of owning exciting cars/bikes here in Indonesia and Singapore maybe Malaysia too

Sam! I just saw the full video. I’m a viewer from Singapore and I currently drive a Mercedes S400. I’ll answer a few of the points you mentioned. Cars in SG are taxed at a rate of 180% for an car that’s priced over USD 50,000. So that registration thing you mentioned is known as certificate of entitlement. The 20k pounds you mentioned is correct however what you didn’t mention is that it last for 10 years only. That means after 10 years the car needs to be sent overseas or one needs to repay that 20k fee (whatever the market price for that is). Anyways I’ll give you an example with my previous car which was a V8 Vantage roadster. Brand new it was SG$700,000 but I bought it at 3 years of age and it cost me about SG$500,000. Imagine the loss the first owner was subjected to! Anyways when I sold it after 3 years of ownership I managed to get SG$300,000. At the 10th year when the COE runs out the car is valued at whatever the market value in the UK or Australia/ NZ is. A lot of the older cars are exported out. That value won’t be more than US$30 or 40 grand. Regarding financing.. I got a new S400 2.5 years ago and it cost almost SG$500,000 and at the time in order to get financing I had to put down 50% ie 250 grand cash and the rest was financed at SG$6006 a month at a 3 year term. Interest on the loan is very low, only 1.8%. I’m about to sell the car for a Bentley Bentayga and the price after 2.5 years is about Sgd280,000. It’s a rip off but we need cars mate! Enjoy your travels!

Live here for more than half a decade and there are good reasons why prices are that high, as owning a car comes with 'Certificate of Entitlement' (not kidding - CoE does stand for entitlement). BTW, Singapore has no Capital Gains Tax, so at the end of fiscal year it is typical to extract the profit out and buy lovely things. BTW, cars are not status symbols in Singapore - rare watches are. It is normal to see people with Richard Mille in a subway (SMRT). Now, coming back to cars, when you buy a car here, you pay CoE for 10 years in advance, and if you let's say sell a car after 2 years, you get 8 years of CoE back (or calculate that return in the price of sale). So, question to people of Blighty - how much is a Porsche Carrera 911T AFTER 10 years of road tax, registration etc.? So, it's 93,000 pounds with VAT, add ten years of MOT etc... becomes how much GBP? For driving and enjoying, find me in Motor City or Yas.

The reason behind why Singapore has all these crazy taxes is because being a tiny island, the government has to control the amount of vehicles on the road to prevent over-crowding and pollution. The taxes are considered based on the amount of vehicles already registered to be road driven which means less cars = cheaper taxes. And also, if you drive a hybrid car versus a petrol car, lower emission = cheaper taxes. Not only the automobiles in Singapore cost a fortune but even properties are considered one of the highest in the world. But, I guess as a Singaporean myself, we have learnt to adapt to the lifestyle, although not necessarily in the most graceful manner (i mean we tend to complain a lot).

The converted price is irrelevant. Based on how many supercars you saw on the street, clearly enough people have the buying power to get these cars. Factor in the average salary etc and make a real comparison.

Not exactly. Supercars are only seen in very specific locations of the city and often only belong to the top 1% Till this day I only personally know of 1 guy whose dad owns a few supercars, the rest of us peasants can't even afford cars usually

Dear Sam, basically the cars here are imported at the original price same as UK, however the government impose a Additional Registration Tax on every vehicle at the exact SAME price as its original cost to import. Then there is a piece of paper that allows you to drive a car for only 10 years legally here which costs around 35k to 60k more. After that you have sales tax and other transfer fees and road tax of up to 7k for a V12 engine car.

Although the taxes are hefty, the reality is that Singapore Is a very small market, with only around 100,000 new cars sold per year, so it’s low volumes and lack of competition that keep prices high. The (intended) outcome of low volumes of cars is very little congestion, which is great. Ohhh, and the public transport system, particularly the MRT train system is fabulous, so most people don’t have cars.
@joemourad6 жыл бұрын
They do this in order to protect the environment... no one told you it costs 40k USD to get a license there as well? Educate yourselves people. The place where I am living in now also has taxes similar to this in Amman, Jordan. Take for example a mustang costing 100k USD and so on and so forth. Also, Singapore has (as you can tell by now) lots and lots of millionaires.
