The GPS Module, also called SAFE Plus, will allow the aircraft to fly a holding pattern on its own, return home and land by itself. Initiated by holding the bind button down. See page 24 of the manual for details. Yes, I liked your video on this plane. C. Fulton

I bought an Aero Scout (because of this channel) and flew an RC plane for the first time in 25 years. I love AC3X and safe, if I had these back in the old days I would have never gotten out of the hobby! So yes, I think the new technology is wonderful and will make it much easier for newbies to start out and build confidence in those of us that need a little assist as we dust our wings off.

The little "do-hickeys" on the wings are called vortex generators. They cause the air over the top of the wing to swirl and draw back onto the wing surface. They give more aileron authority at slow speeds and reduce the stall speed. Keep up the good work! You are ambassadors for the hobby, and have integrity!

I'd say it's good for the hobby. It's a lower threshold for beginners. I can say from personal experience, wrecking your first plane on the maiden flight is extremely discouraging. So anything that helps keep the plane from wrecking long enough to actually get experience with it is a good thing.

I first tried my hand at model aircraft flying back when you had planes on two wires 50 years ago! It was disaster on the first flight! I now have this Carbon Cub and I bought ALL the options (LAS, GPS,etc.) I would have NOT been enticed to purchase it if had didn't have these options. I'm hoping my second attempt at model aircraft works better than my first! (I have managed to accumulate 10,000+ hours at the controls of real airplanes between my two model aircraft attempts!)

I have the S+ and love it. I fly with the GPS turned off as it takes forever to figure out where it is so I can fly. I also like the beginner mode as if you let go of the sticks, the plane goes level and flys on (no crash). So, if I am in mode 2 or 3 and have a problem, I just click it to mode 1 and the plane saves itself. I never could get the auto landing function to work - may be a GPS or compass problem. Still afraid to try loops or rolls but will someday. Nice first plane though. I get 6 minutes of flight time on a battery.

"And you can instantly return to steady flight using Panic Recovery with the push of a button in any flight mode." That is in the descrpition on the HobbyZone page for the Carbon Cub S2. "Panic Recovery mode at the push of a button to prevent loss of control and crashes" is on the Horizon Hobby page for this plane. The PDF manual says "Button I operates PANIC mode when pressed" on page 7 but you have to assign AUX1 to button I. Later on it says "At any time release both sticks to activate panic recovery mode for self-leveling."

As a total noob, I got this plane partially because of the "training wheels" / Safe mode (I don't have landing assist though). For me, it reduces the chance of spending a lot of $$ (to me), then breaking it before enjoying it. I only have a few flights, but love it. Landing w/o landing assist has been easy, even for a noob like me.

It took two new planes before I figured the GPS was defective. I have flown a lot and have two other planes which I have never crashed. My first Carbon Cub took off, made a gentle right turn (in SAFE) and nosed straight down. I bought another, moved the GPS from the first to the new plane and the same thing happened. Since I own several other planes (4 channel) and have never came close to crashing either, the only thing I can figure is the gps somehow took over and cause the crash. I have been flying for years and was going to use this to help others learn to fly. Now I am out around $550.

@@TheRcSaylors We have solved the mystery. I upgraded from the RTF transmitter to the new NX6. You know, download the BNF templet from Horizon and bind you plane and you are ready to go! That worked on all my planes except the Cub. It seems there was a programing error in the templet. While on phone support we found the error and changing one simple setting and the rebuilt plane flies fine. I did remove the GPS as the wrong setting combined with the GPS likely caused the crash.

Plugged into Channel 7 on Flight Controller. And it is facing the right direction. The light on the windscreen seems wrong. It flashes green and red (not purple). Is this an error in setup? Any idea what is the correct install? If flap setup is of interest I’ll share what I did. It is not obvious and HS instructions are pathetic. At least to a novice.

Thank you for your reviews. They have definitely increased my enjoyment of the hobby. I've been flying RC since about 1970 but your reviews have helped me with evaluating the benefit of the new technology and the amazing new foam airplanes. I bought the Carbon Cub S+ for my 6 year old grandson in Australia and he could handle the controls in beginner mode beside taking off and landing. I think an inexperienced person should use an experienced one to set up the plane. You must have put the landing gear fairing on upside down to tease the audience.

Nate, I have a serious question if you don't mind. If for some reason thee carbon s lost signal, will the virtual fence still work? I lost my little blue sport cub because my transmitter batteries died. The cub went full throttle n flew to egypt or turkey idk. I ordered the carbon cub s And it WI be here tomorrow hopefully. Thanks in advance.

Good question! If you have the GPS module installed, YES it will save the plane and return if the transmitter signal is lost. Ill have to test it to see what happens if you do not have the GPS module installed. Best advice though, is to plan on putting in fresh AA batteries about twice a year, minimum. Hope that never happens to you again!

The technology is ridiculous for the beginner but the best possible tool to save you money and absolutely understand what you are doing is buying real flight simulator, I swear it works, I can fly anything now and it's super fun

Yes, assuming you have compatible Spektrum DSM2/DSMX receiver. That’s the appeal of E-Flite’s Bind and Fly models.

the rtf comes with DXs transmitter, can I use it to add flaps?
@marathon7man
@marathon7man Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use channel 7 on the DXS…. BUT the DXS isn’t programmable and you can’t add elevator compensation when the flaps go down. Without this, the plane will balloon itself a lot. If you still want to add it then just be prepared to use the elevator at the exact time flaps command is given.

The GPS just stopped it from going past a certain distance called a geo-fence it could be set to automatically come back or stay within a certain distance but you still have to fly the plane I think there is also a button to remember where it took off it will land at that point automatically also that’s pretty cool
@TheRcSaylors

Yes, there is a plane that can do that and it is awesome! However, this plane, as is, does not have the GPS unit installed. It can be added later if you wish. Happy Flying 😁👍😎⚓

I have to say I learned how to fly a Cessna 152 when I was 13 years old and always wanted to become a pilot!!! You two are the reason my wife and I are building flitetest swappables. We are both brand new to the hobby and we are in Prince Edward Island Canada!! We love your videos and have been binge watching you guys and the flitetest channel... thank you so much , we are happy we found you on here just by chance. We are also huge Star Wars fans and my wife Lisa loves your shirt .. total inspiration for us to become pilots together!!

The elevator down issue is because you need to set it up with the plane level, not sitting on the landing wheels. Otherwise it will have no down elevator except for advanced mode/only as3x mode. That way the flight controller is set at its regular level flight, as opposed to a tail dragger that has the motor pointing to the sky when sitting on a table. You put a pile of books under the rear wheels to level it and then Bind it and do all that stuff again..

The panic recovery is simple flipping the top left toggle (flight modes) to beginner and the plane recovers. This obviously only works when you are in intermediate or advanced mode to start with. I've used that action several times to save myself from crashing while practicing in intermediate mode flight. And the landing gear skirts issue, I used 2 extra small clear zip ties after drilling small wholes in the skirt and securing to the wire gear. (Learned that from another experienced RC U-tuber online).
@TheRcSaylors

I dug a little and realized there is an additional "recovery" that will "auto land" the plane if it loses signal. It basically spirals down to the ground till it hits the ground. Better than just flying away! Thats what I was trying to get it to do in this video.

The wheel pants add rigidity to the landing gear to reduce bending of the landing gear. You can help keep them on by using mini tie wraps but eventually they break. I made a pair from some aluminum off of an old CPU cooling fan, tie wrapped them on and they work great. Just added landing lights to help visibility in the fall weather. Thanks for all you two do!
