Just a word of caution..... If you use plastic bags to stuff material to shape, turn them inside out before you use them. The printing on some bags react with cleaner residue (and sometimes even just to prolonged moisture exposure) and will transfer the printing from the bag to your item. A lesson I learned the hard way!

It was helpful to me when I learned it as well. After 97 everything has to be labeled China. I suppose it's possible that some company could have tried to get away with it, but the rule is pretty standard across all of the products from the PRC.

Thank you so much for taking the time to show us how you cleaned it. I use that Clorox bleach spray for everything. It is hard to get the residue off your fingers. It takes forever. It works great. I would’ve never thought you could use it In that instance. I would’ve been afraid that the red would have run but you taught me something new with that type not running.
@TheChaChingKing Жыл бұрын
I have used Clorox a bunch. The key for me had always been to limit the exposure time, rinse, and repeat as needed. So far, I've never had a fabric fail doing it that way. It's really effective.

i'm guessing using Dawn is to remove body oils, however Dawn is expensive! I use Suave Clarifying Shampoo - works just as good if not better. I also use Suave Clarifying Shampoo to clean the shower pan & grease stains on other clothing.
@TheChaChingKing Жыл бұрын
I think Suave would work very well. I love Dawn and use SO little of it that the difference in cost ends up being negligible. But I would think the Suave would work great.

Thanks for watching! The bags are flexible and still allow some ventilation. And...EVERYBODY has them. Someone in the comments made a good point. If there's any ink on the bags, turn them inside out first to prevent any possibility of transfer. I can't believe I never thought of that.

Very impressive Scot. Not sure how much that cap goes for, but it would have to be a pretty expensive cap for me to invest the time and resources to clean it up. Still, I am sure this will come in handy to lots of people.

Oh, it's probably not worth it from a financial point of view for this cap. I listed it for $40, and it should get close to that. But I enjoy cleaning them and some caps are worth a lot more.

Thanks for making the video! I have a black snapback hat that is in really good condition. It has a faint smell of mold that I've been trying to eliminate. I've tried mild laundry detergent, a Lysol spray, and airing it out, and it is about 95% better. Should I try Dawn, too?
@TheChaChingKing10 ай бұрын
Dawn is like magic. But, believe it or not, I've had great luck with vodka. Don't drink until you can't smell. Spray it on the hat. Try a spot that won't show first to make sure it doesn't do anything negative. The alcohol in vodka will encapsulate musty smells and chemically get rid of them. Alcohol is the reason Febreeze works. Vodka will also remove ink. So, be aware of that around printed tags. It could remove everything.

@TheChaChingKing Жыл бұрын
Usually, the paint is very obvious. It will be thicker and you can feel it on the surface of the fabric. That said, there's no guarantees. It's always best to test a portion to see if the cleaning will harm it in any way.@@g.m.5412

Hello. 9 months since you made and posted this video and I am just coming across it as I was having issues removing some red coloring/stain from an all white Polo Hat I bought as a Marshall’s back in early 2021 for $10. Weird thing about the red stain. I wore the Polo hat about a week or so ago and when I got home and took it off there were those red stains. I used Dawn spray on it but it did not remove the red stain. I need to get that Clorox spray to see if the red will come off. Thanks for taking the time to make and post this video. Much appreciated. By the way, love that painters hat you have. Wish I could buy one. If they have those available please let me know even though you mentioned it was fairly old.
@TheChaChingKing4 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's probably close to thirty years old. It's tough to find them. But they are not crazy valuable when you do. I hope the tutorial proves helpful!

At what point is the time and effort involved make it not worth it? Do you have a minimum price for an item before you are willing to go to all effort of cleaning it?
@TheChaChingKing9 ай бұрын
This hat wasn't worth it. Honestly, if things need a whole lot of time and trouble (like this one), they need to be worth a hundred bucks. BUT...for me...I also enjoy the renovation. I love seeing the change. I love saving things. So, it isn't just the money for me. but if it isn't a labor of love, you are totally right to ask whether or not it's worth it. If it just comes down to money, if you have to think long and hard first, it's not worth it.

@TheChaChingKing3 ай бұрын
It's because of the reversion of Hong Kong to the sovereignty of mainland China on 1 July 1997. So, it's due much more to what China demands than it is anything to do with the US.

Doesn't this ruin the form of the hat? Everytime I have ever tried to wash my hats they lose their form and never look right after
@TheChaChingKing5 ай бұрын
It certainly can. I use old plastic grocery bags and make sure I get the shape of the hat exactly like I want it while it's drying. That take a bit of practice, but it makes a huge difference if it dries in the right shape.
