I just watched a video from Dave's Auto in Utah they specialize in Diesels. They had a ford 6.7 come in with almost 900,000 miles on it. the first thing they did was pull the CP4 pump out. NO ware at all! the owner changed the oil regularly and used fuel additives, changed the fuel filter at the same time as the oil. The engine stopped due to a lifter failure. It boils down to maintenance, oil changes as well as the lubricants (additives) since our government has required the removal of said items in our diesel fuels.

Ram's stopped supplying them and has returned to a modified CP3. Duramax discontinued using the CP4 years ago. My neighbor's 2018 Ford Powerstroke ate a pump. $16,000 damage. Luckily he bought the Ford factory backed extended warranty. it's a Bosch issue not the truck.

I’m sorry but you don’t have a deep enough understanding on the topic to have a valid opinion. I am in no means defending Bosch or the CP4, but the fuel in America is terrible. We have no min mandated cetane rating. We have ULSD. It’s all emissions related, I’m not going to explain everything. If you DO NOT use quality fuel and additives in your diesel engine with a HPCR system, it will die an early death.

@jimmysturdevant9843

@@SuperDutyDave if you have a HPCR DPF equip truck, NEVER use anything in the fuel aside from clean diesel fuel and FUEL additive. The ashes from burning the oils additive package are absorbed into the catalyst substrate permanently damaging it and costing you thousands of dollars and in severe cases an entire engine. 2 stroke oil does not lubricate as well as a quality fuel additive and can be tested at home using simple testing tools (like Project Farm does). I think the whole reason Ford/GM won’t recall the CP4’s is the amount of time and labor that goes into replacing the pump. I think the reason Ram was able to recall the CP4 is due to the accessibility and ease of access to the fuel pump location on the inline 6 vs the V8’s (burried in the valley of the block).

I put a DCR on my brand new 2024 F550 at 3,000 miles. I talked with two different companies that provide alternatives to the CP4. They both did a very good job presenting all the issues with the CP4. It has too many issues to ever be deemed a reliable pump. Sulphur reduction is only one thing that affects the reliability of the CP4. I just spoke with a few friends over in Europe, where sulphur has been reduced there as well. They are now seeing CP4 pump failures as well. If you have a diesel engine, you have to run additive in every tank of fuel. If you have a CP4, think about replacing it, or at the very least, adding the disaster prevention kit. Unlike JB, I cannot get fuel at the same place because we are full-time travelers, criss-crossing North America. We use Archoil 6500, Hot Shot's Secret, or Opti-Lube XPD in every tank. Only ones I will use. And I do not put any fuel in the truck that has any Bio in it.

Injector timing is controled by the camshaft position sensor , the Cp4 supplies high pressure to both the lh and rh fuel rails which acts as a high pressure storage area for all the high pressure fuel lines to each injector, The signal from the camshaft sensor is sent the PCM which in turn turns each injector on and off as per load on the engine. So in turn is the Camshaft now slightly out of time, I'm not sure how the Cam timing gear is fastened to the camshaft itself but if the cam is now out of time I would bet the NOX and Regen and EGR system would flip codes.

I carry a fuel test kit I came up with. I’ve even had water in fuel at a truck stop. Carry a clear container with a wide lid so you can wipe it out after, and pour about 6-10 oz’s in the container to check for contamination before filling your tank. If there is moisture in the fuel you will immediately start seeing droplets sinking to the bottom of the container. I have a 5 gal bucket with the clear container, (plastic is fine), a funnel to pour the test fuel in the tank if it’s fine, fuel additive, and shop towels. It literally takes 2 minutes to check the fuel before filling.

He said he has no clue what technology they use in their formulation but they are killing it. I feel like that was a pretty honest thing for someone to say about a competitor's product. The issue is the CP4 failed with both RAM and GM. Both RAM and GM no longer use the CP4. Ford is the only one using it and if it fails it will cause $10-$15k in damage. The issue is not just that it fails, it’s how it grenades the fuel system. The fact the aftermarket sells CP4 disaster prevention kits speaks for itself. Customers today care more about LED headlights, ventilated massaging seats, and wheels design than engine quality/reliability. Ford can sell a $90k truck that doesn’t even have a spray-in bedliner and customers will buy it. The real fix is more competition. When you only have GM, Ram and Ford to choose from, they can do as they please and customers will have to accept it. But if Toyota made an HD truck, watch how fast the GM, Ram and Ford quality improves. It’s a business, you make the cheapest product possible and charge the highest price possible. Only more competition fixes it.

I’m a small business and it depends on this truck and they are trying to make me pay for it truck has 52,000 miles and I even bought extended warranty bumper to bumper for 200,000 it’s not fair and sad

As a certified Stellantis technician, Ford's excuse is high levels of corporate speak and in my terms copium. As some may know, Stellantis issued a recall to replace all CP4.2 pumps with the older CP3 pumps because of reliability issues. They did not blame the pandemic, just that the pumps don't hold up. The Cummins for 2025 is using a CP8 pump. Only info I've found is its Chinese in origin.

I Mostly run additives to keep water out of the fuel, Obviously adding lubricity is a big plus but the smallest amount of water getting put through that injection system will cause a lot of devastation. I also believe that bio diesel causes a lot of problems I've never ran it in my truck, maybe an old mechanical diesel not these new engines.

I have a 2014 Silverado Duramax with the cp4, I have 220k on it, the rules I live by are: 1) FASS fuel system for filtration and water separation, along with the factory fuel filter, ( no such thing as to much filtration in diesel fuel systems) 2) always use a quality additive, I have used hotshot secret EDT, but after watching motor oil geek I am going to switch to optilube APD, but any additive is better than none 3) always use fuel from a reputable high volume source ie, truckstop or high volume convenience store So far no issues, I figure with 220k on the clock if it goes now I would probably need new injectors anyways

That's the real answer !, no soot regurgitating through the intake and cylinders and no dpf to cause issues with not quite as clean a burn due to the small amount of oil added to the fuel. I talked to one of the local independent shops a couple of years back that works mainly on Fords and they do a lot of weight loss programs ( this is western Canada ) and they said some customers come in with a brand new 6.7 power stroke and get all the crap stripped off and with it goes their Ford warranty but they are making big bucks in the oil patch with their truck and downtime is everything so eliminating the crap is a huge step. Oddly enough he claimed they do not see many CP4 pumps fail early, yes they do eventually fail he said but that has not been the big issue compared to the horrible emissions. I was quite surprised at that comment, perhaps our fuel is different up here or his customers may be adding fuel additives, its hard to say.

So yah adding a lubricant to the fuel will likely help. But these pumps should be built to handle the poorest fuels in America any the best hardest to find fuel. I know the Europeans use the same pump without problems be we aren’t in Europe and these are supposed to be American trucks. So seems like a poor excuse for not addressing the problem properly

The problem goes all the way back to 2011. We had a fleet of 2011 to 2016 everyone of them lost a pump and had to have a 10 k fuel system replacement. We changed fuel filters every 5 k with the oil change and ran diesel that we treated at our bulk tank thats filtered down to 30 micron water seperator and has a caterpillar 5 micron secondary filter. We went with rams in 2017 not one fuel system failure or engine or trans failure and those trucks all have over 350 k on them. I do not know how ford keeps selling these things .

Ford and gm both started in 2011. Ford was at least smart enough to add a lift pump to feed the cp4. That’s why gm had a higher failure rate. And got sued. Either way the cp4 needs to be ditched.

Anyone who tries telling you there there is any "timing" having to do with a gear on a high pressure fuel pump in a common rail system is either ignorant or intentionally trying to mislead you. The pump simply makes pressure. 100% of the timing is done electronically via the fuel injectors.

I think a lot of people are missing. What ford is doing? I have own ford trucks for 10 years now. They don't care about the recalls. Just want to get the trucks to the dealership, and the dealerships will fix the problem. Now I'm like you. I only get my diesel from Costco if I do not see top tier. I will not put that fuel in my Truck And one more thing, remember during the pandemic. Ford had like close to 400000 trucks setting in Kentucky.
