The first thing I noticed about this reel is its weight kzbin.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I wouldn't say it was uncomfortable but it was a little heavier than other similarly sized reels. However, that didn't deter my enjoyment of how smooth this reel is. I spooled it with 20lb. Tuf-Line XP and it's perfect for what I use it for. I have it paired with an 8'6" Medium/Fast Okuma SST Salmon/Steelhead rod. The combination is perfect for casting and even drifting. I used the reel all day and didn't experience any arm or hand fatigue except when fighting a few fish! The bail is solid and feels strong when engaging by reeling and manually closing the bail by hand. The large rubber handle grip is very comfortable. It's got a powerful drag, silky smooth reeling, and feels very comfortable in the hands. I recommend it!

Here's a tip you might be interested in trying; when you catch a trout let the swim rest for a bit before casting out again, I suspect most of the fish in the swim will know something's up when they hear the hooked fish splashing around and turn off feeding for a bit (or even leave the area). This is a good time for a coffee break or to try the next swim along. In my experience, it's uncommon to get any interest in your lure/bait on the few casts after you hook a fish. On the other hand, it's very common to get a fish on the first or second cast at a new swim. Trout aren't clever but they aren't stupid either, they have a really good level of awareness about what's coming and going in the water around them.

Mike - the rule of thumb here in Florida with Tarpon, snook etc is that if you touch the fish, or touch the leader, then it counts as a caught fish. If you are catch & release fishing it's MUCH better to never touch the fish at all. When you do these challenges, you should count any fish that you can touch your leader on. If you're not using a leader, it counts to just grab the line above the fish. We ALWAYS use a leader down here, but that's saltwater, not trout fishing or bass fishing. Snook and redfish fishing can be pretty similar to bassing, especially snook. They love cover and top waters!

Not that you need my advice, but I would have fished facing downstream from the head of the pool, casting 45% towards the far bank and "swinging" the spinners through the current. Works like magic when you're flyfishing with streamers. When you are reeling with the current, as you were, the water is pushing the bait from behind and can muck up the action.

Unless fishing Lake Ontario tribes or special regs catch n release areas. But it's cold in NYS. I live beside a bay... good ice fishing I'm told. 2 miles from a stream with Steelhead. A few miles from one of the best Brown Trout waters in NYS. BUT I struggle with the cold.

You worked hard for that one buddy! Nice Job!
@johnathonlangley56994 жыл бұрын
These are some nice fish! When fishing insect imitations, as a fly angler, we generally try to let the lure move as naturally as possible in the water--a dead drift. The trouble is strike detection--trout will pick something up and spit it right back out when they realize it's fake, almost in one fluid motion. I don't fish much with conventional tackle, so I don't know how you'd replicate that, but it seems like "going slower" worked for you with the grub you were fishing near the bottom. And please get a net, dude. So much sweet fishing gear, but no net for trout catch and release?
