Hey, the lime plaster looks great. I’m so glad y’all opted for that route as a top coat. The white will help reflect unwanted heat, too.
@ws48602 жыл бұрын
My old aunt taught me how to prepare the egg shells like this: you collect the halves and after you have baked bread or something similar, you dry them with the residual heat in the oven. This has two advantages: 1. you prevent unwanted bacteria or salmonella from surviving and 2. later in the mixer, the eggshell lime becomes much finer and it also goes faster.

This is looking fantastic. As for eggshells. You might persuade places that use a lot of eggs like care residences or breakfast restaurants to save some for you. It doesn’t look like you use a great amount of dog hair so your furry beasts might provide enough for you. I am in astonishment at your creativity, persistence and plain hard work. I find this project as you are doing it utterly fascinating.

Jim and Jess, you have great ideas for your build! It's looking a lot more durable with the rocks and lime / eggshell / fur plaster! How will you continue to come up with all the eggshells? Can you get a local school or restaurant to save eggshells for you? Family and friends? I do think a CORN GRINDER which takes dry corn kernels and reduces them into a powder, would be better for your grinding purposes. You can buy a nice one at Tractor Supply or on Amazon. If you'd like to try it, a small coffee grinder might work, too. Save your nice blender from wearing out too fast - since you have a big task ahead. The corn grinder should be able to keep up with your work pace. You seem to be moving right along, now. So close to starting the inside plaster! Stay safe! 🙏

They have a wire toothed brush called a slicker brush. It will really help get the fur you need. Using it gently feels good to the dogs. And the brushes aren't very expensive and can be bought on line through many places.

"And the spell is almost complete!" Lol, adding some "shell of egg" and "fur of dog" to round out the brew. :) Is this the final coat, or will there be one more? Are you planning on adding any color to the final coat or leaving it white? Are you going to use the rocks over the whole building, or just on top? Let me know if you need more dog fur. Gracie is shedding her undercoat and we have plenty of GSD fur, lol. I can take the Furminator (undercoat brush) to her anytime and comb out a whole second dog, it seems like.

Lime plaster typically has hair in it. Early on people often used horse hair. But all sorts of hair has been found historically in lime plaster. Can I suggest since you only have 2 relatively short haired dogs you might want to tap into some other sources. For example the sweepings of a barber or hair salon, check with a local dog groomer or a stable. A lot of horses get curry brushed out regularly. I have 2 long haired dogs and am buried in dog hair. However I live in Australia so I don’t think I could get away with sending you some through customs 😆 Also give local café or other food services a bucket and ask them for their egg shells. I think the white lime will also reflect the suns heat. I personally think the contrast of the rock and white looks spectacular!

Jess, Have you considered using a heavy duty pastry bag or a squeeze bottle to put the lime mixture between the rocks? It appears the plaster is the consistency of thick batter. You can make the hole large enough for it and then use larger offset cake spatula to smooth it out. It seems like that small palette knife takes longer. Just a thought!
@patparsons2182 жыл бұрын
Idea: Places that sell brick veneer, home depot, lowes etc, sell what is a heavy duty extra large "pastry bag". It is used to put mortar in the spaces between pieces of brick veneer. Its though and holds a whole lot. Seems it would give you a faster application without compromising the look or function. Also it would help to keep the mixture moist as you work.
