Inglourious Basterds is a 2009 war film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, starring Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender, Eli Roth, Diane Kruger, Daniel Brühl, Til Schweiger and Mélanie Laurent. The film tells an alternate history story of two plots to assassinate Nazi Germany's leadership-one planned by Shosanna Dreyfus, a young French Jewish cinema proprietor, and the other planned by the British but ultimately conducted solely by a team of Jewish American soldiers led by First Lieutenant Aldo Raine. Christoph Waltz co-stars as Hans Landa, an SS colonel in charge of tracking down Raine's group. The title was inspired by Italian director Enzo G. Castellari's 1978 Euro War film The Inglorious Bastards, though Tarantino's film is not a remake of it.

It’s incredible how evil waltz is in this movie lol. He’s evil as fuck and he pretty much wins. He succeeded in everything he set out to do, the only reason we feel satisfied with the ending for him specifically is the swastika being carved into his face. But if that didn’t happen he just would’ve won. He would’ve been evil as fuck and gotten away with it. Great villain.

I find what happens to Landa to be quite a compelling loss: he assumes a level playing field, that all enemies as competent as him must be playing the same "game". In the end though the Americans are not as obedient (one might say "loyal," or better yet cowardly) towards their superiors, and the Basterds, even Aldo, much more likely to risk themselves to make things as miserable as possible for just one more Nazi. Because it *is* personal.

Himmler was entering in separate peace negotiations on his own (historically - quite a bit later though), so his death was not required for the end of war. For the fictional universe of Tarantino, we can assume that Landa was very well informed about Himmler's traitorous nature and in fact - wanted to act quicker so that he, and not Himmler, would be credited for ending the war.

There were some in the British government who would have accepted Himmler's peace but that was before two events, the Potsdam Conference and Pearl Harbor, where the allies agreed to accept only a full unconditional surrender from Germany and when Germany declared war on the United States. Goring and Himmler both tried to negotiate a peace but this was in violation of the agreement made at Potsdam with Stalin and the Allies. Himmler was still the Reichmarshal and officially successor to Hitler, he wasn't discovered and removed from the position by Hitler until late April 1945, and his secret peace talks were not going on in June 1944. Even the July plot was meant to only happen if Col. Von Staufenberg could kill Hitler and Himmler both at the Wolf's Lair. Himmler absolutely needed to die.

An SS officer would see Himmler taking power in the absence of Hitler and his loyalists as a good thing, and so wouldn't likely want to draw attention to it. Essentially, for Landa, this whole operation is a win-win situation. Either the Americans succeed in their plan, in which case Himmler takes over and sets Germany on what he sees as the right path, or he stops them and is lauded as a hero. Either way, he's better off

Nah, the intro sets up his character nicely. He portrays politeness in a sickly sweet manner until he drops all pretense and dryly accuses the farmer of sheltering Jews. Not only this switch, but also the way in which he betrays his own cause in what he considered to be a full proof plan shows his true colors. Landa truly considers himself a polished gentleman, an elite that is without reproach. All the while, he's a Nazi who prides himself in the ability to hunt and kill his fellow man. The man is a psychopath.

Himmler was the "crazy guy"...tolerated, but now where near respected enough to carry the war if the others died.

Himmler had no real legislative power over the war itself, only the handling of foreign territories, which Germany was rapidly losing at this point. Himmler was extremely powerful, but only because all POWs and subjugated peoples were under his jurisdiction. He had very little effect on the politics of Nazi Germany or the war effort, while Hitler, Goebbels, Goring and Bormann did. Also, Himmler was a front commander at this point, having been appointed due to Hitler's lack of faith in his generals. So Himmler was commanding forces like any other officer at this point. He could be captured/forced to surrender through military means.
