Rouse was the best sax player for Monk. The swing is incredible in this Band. This is really fun hanging with you guys and listening to music. It´s like when in the old days, after the gig we would hang and listen until 5 or 6 in the morning. After playing 5 sets 6 nights a week. Yes children, it was that way at one time in the far away past.

Sometimes people let thinking get in the way of experiencing. As musicians, we get the urge to pull apart and analyze but doing so ruins the overall joy of experiencing the whole. With Monk, the overall effect of the piece with all of its moving parts, harmonies and dissonances, rhythms and silences, make the experience unique. Just like Monk and his music. Monk is my favorite jazz musician and one of my 3 all time favorite musicians. Of all Monk's gigging drummers I always liked Frankie the best. I've broken down a few Monk songs on youtube, such as Misterioso, Pannonica, I Surrender Dear and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes I think my all time favorite Monk track is "Round Midnight, the solo effort on the album Thelonious Himself. Big thanks for this post. Monk was called "a fountain of sweetness." YES!!

Thanks for giving the drummer some! I love the look on Frankie's face during that last chorus. I've had that feeling a few times. It's like he's saying: Yeah, we just laid down some crazy stuff, went all over the place, and now we're tight together at the end of all things--proving that we're doing exactly what we intended to do. I saw Thelonious Monk, play at The Free Trade Hall,Manchester, England, UK in 1961. This was Monks, very first Tour of UK. Art Blakey Jazz Messengers, with Lee Morgan/Bobby Timmons, was on the other half of this Concert. ( I was 21 years of age at that time) Sorry for being boringly nostalgic. Anyway, Peace to all.😮

At that Bruxelles gig Monk does a crazy shoe-shuffle walkabout during the tenor solo on Rhythm-ning... it is jaw-dropping... btw the 1965 BBC version of that tune has the best ride-cymbal sound and spangalang iv ever heard - the pushing bass creates a pocket wider than a wizard's sleeve...

have loved monk charts since listening Buddy Rich band play Monks chart called "Astronaut" 45 years ago--was mind blowing! with simple swing beat, the vibraphone solo is the best most melodic vibe solo I've ever heard!! period

It's clear to see where Chick got his comping style from. Heavily Monk inspired. It was also on the Brilliant Corner session that the other horn player (Ernie Henry) had a complete nervous breakdown and asked Monk to be silent during his solo spot. And after many takes, the final edition is still an edit between two different takes. They never nailed it in one take.

He and Ellington to me are the biggest influences for songwriting in jazz. To listen to Monk play Ellington and hear that he can play traditional jazz and then turn around and play these dense harmonic structures shows what a genius he truly was. “Brillant Corners” is the album of his work that I’ve listened to, shows him at his pinnacle and his confidence and freedom on this album is mind blowing. He is Monk and we should all be grateful he gave the music he did.

Here’s how profound his influence was, Coltrane would go to him and ask him to figure out chord structures and Miles would be forced to sit in with Monk by Bird just to understand music better. He is my biggest songwriter influence though I could never write in his style. He showed that you could use M2sd and m2sd in chords and then play this flawless part that belongs there. He played parts that might sound “off” to the listener, you know afterwards it was the only part that fit the music.

I have a good one for you guys. Straight no Chaser early recording on blue note, note how the first chord is so strange or vague if you will. I am trained on transcribing but Monk's chords throw me off to the point where I'm unable to figure it out. Maybe you guys can solve that mystery, the first chord behind the first phrase is very unusual.

Yeah Miles understood his limitations and what made him sound. Not that he couldn't hear what Monk was up to. He also said he couldn't play with crashers. He needed Wynton Victor Bill Herbie.
