What I love about Downey Jr.'s character is that he is the very first to truly understand what's happened, but because he refuses to break character, he only tries to warn the others in the way his character would in the context of a melodramatic, Hollywood movie, so nobody believes him.

This is one of my favorite movies ever. It's not just a comedy, there is a lot of commentary on stereotyping and discrimination in general, obviously in terms of Ben Stiller playing someone with disability and RDJ in blackface. I love how generally people still love this movie. Someone tried to "cancel" RDJ for blackface a litlle back and all of Black Twitter put that down immediately. There will be no Tropic Thunder slander, ever. LMAO.
@Muck006
@Muck006 Жыл бұрын
Is there REALLY "commentary" about stereotyping and discrimination? They just made funny characters ... and those NEED (in a certain style of humor) EXAGGERATION, which lands you right in the "disability" and "playing blackface" (because that is the visual way to say "method actor") corners. "Commentary" is something serious ... and also includes a conclusion ... which is completely missing from the movie. "JUST HAVE FUN WITH OUTRAGEOUS CHARACTERS ... and dont judge at all", that's the message of the movie!
@1215298
@1215298 Жыл бұрын
@@Muck006 I mean, there is commentary on it: just because commentary is presented in a certain style, be that comedic or otherwise, doesn't mean it's not addressing something. That's what seperates simple parody from satirisation, which this movie does do: I mean, I still remember when the Ancient One in Marvel was getting so much crap because the role was played by a caucasian woman instead of Asian man. Kevin Feige is still getting crap for this 'whitewashing' to this day, to the point he apologised last year despite casting for the role happening almost 9 years ago and he openly said he was trying to avoid stereotyping when he chose the role. Alpa Chino playing the 'straight man' whenever Kirk goes a little too far in his portrayal is a perfect lampshade of how a lot of people view casting in Holywood: "Maybe I just knew I had to represent, because they had one good part for a black man and they gave it to *cRoCoDILe dUnDeE*". Just because it's not a dark and scathing world like the Watchmen, or a corporatocracy and politics angle like The Boys, doesn't mean it isn't a nice distorted mirror of the modern world.
@cristonsloan
@cristonsloan Жыл бұрын
@@Muck006 From my understanding of the term, I would disagree with both assertions that commentary must be serious and needs to include a conclusion. My understanding of Commentary is that it draws one's attention to a situation from a perspective that differs from the norm, in an effort to make you view said situation in a fresh and enlightening manner. It is perfectly acceptable to do that and allow the viewer to draw their own conclusions, rather than forcing your own. In fact, it is infinitely more effective to do that, because everyone is more inclined to believe a conclusion to which they themselves have come, rather than one that has been pushed upon them. It is your job as the commentator to highlight that situation in such a manner that the conclusion to which the viewer comes is self-evident, without you having to spell it out for them. And if they come to a different conclusion to yours... well then even better, because the entire purpose of commentary is to provide differing and unique perspectives so as to help us all better understand the objective Truth of a situation. Likewise, it is often far more effective to call attention to a serious situation with comedy that shows an EXAGGERATED viewpoint (yet still within the boundaries of Truth), with the express purpose of driving home the point that is being made, rather than merely pointing it out in a serious tone. Comedy, especially the comedy of this movie, relies on absurdity for its humour and absurdity is one of the most effective means by which to draw attention to a situation that needs to change. When one realises how absurd the truth of any bad situation really is, one can truly appreciate the need for transformation in order for sanity to be restored.

The character that Robert Downey played deserves his own movie played by him. I’m black and I loved it. Funniest character by far.

I only watched this once after it came out on home video, It was my wifes choice of movie for the evening and I was only half paying attention to it as I was doing some work from home. The first scene with the Les Grossman character was bugging the hell out of me because I couldn't figure out who the actor was. By his second or third scene I really had my nose in my work but just heard the voice and immediately looked up and said" OMG it his him!" My wife still hadn't picked up on the actor so I wrote it down on a peice of paper and she kept trying to figure it out through the end credits. She still didn't believe it was Tom Cruise when she saw his name in the credits and then went back to watch his scenes and by then, " now I know I can't unsee it."

What would Tropic Thunder 2 be about? They wrapped up everything in the film. The drug guys coming after the actors? Tugg Speedman trying to make and direct the film, they were making in the first one? Speedman having to hide from rabid PETA members, for killing a panda? I would love to see these guys back together in a film like this one, but how would you pull off a sequel?

I first heard of "Tropic Thunder" from my mom, whom she wanted to see that movie on opening weekend back in 2008. Jump to 10 years later, by the time when I was 16, I began watching that movie with my mom and my stepdad and it had me laughing all the way through, no matter how controversial it was. And the jokes (particularly RDJ wearing blackface) may not work today, if I'm not mistaken. But it's still my favorite movie of 2008.💯

There are so many "...what the WHAT????" moments in this film, it's hard to pick just one moment. BUT if I had to, it would be Steve Coogan stepping on the mine. I SO did not see that coming.... and from that point I knew there was no limit to what they would do. Tossing stabbing boy off the bridge like a shuriken might be a close second. I only own the theatrical cut, but even in your edit I saw so much stuff that was not in my copy, I think I may have to acquire a copy of the director's cut. Thanks for watching this. You reminded me how much I like this movie.

One of my favorite comedies. There is a mock documentary extra where Kirk, as Lincoln, takes Lincoln's family hostage in some sort of mental break/episode. LMFAO.

Yeah, Justin Theroux and Ben Stiller were the ones who came up with the idea for this movie, and co-wrote it along with Etan Cohen. He also has a big role in Mulholland Drive.
