I love how this movie just embraces the weird and doesn't even attempt to explain things. Jack just wanders into the story and then leaves
@KthulhuXxx
@KthulhuXxx 2 жыл бұрын
I kind of feel like that's because Jack's the POV character, and he's too dumb/stubborn to ask what's going on and insist that he gets better explanations. The audience doesn't really fully know what exactly is going on because neither does Jack. He's also not really the lead character if you look at the story closely: He's really more of Wang's bumbling sidekick...but he doesn't really seem to realize it, and since he's the POV character....

The easiest way to explain this movie is that Jack thinks he's the main character but he's actually Wang's sidekick and it's really Wang who's the main character, and that's why Jack doesn't know what the hell is going on and is just swept along all the weirdness. Wang's the one who goes on a quest to save his girl, the one who knows how to fight, knows what's going on, and who gets the girl in the end. Jack's just there to help because he wants his truck back.

"This Lo Pan character comes out of thin air in the middle of a goddamn alley, while his buddies are flying around on wires cutting everybody to shreds. And he just stands there waiting for me to drive my truck straight through him, with light coming out of his mouth!" This is definitely my favorite Carpenter movie, it's just so damn quotable! Also yeah this movie really rushes things but that's mainly because we're experiencing it through Jack's eyes, he has no clue what's happening because he's just the bumbling sidekick. Wang is the real hero of the story, we're just not seeing it through his eyes.

"The Chinese have a lot of hells." I love that line.
@2apocalypsex

And they really do. Originally Diyu (Hell) had 12,800 hells located under the earth - eight dark hells, eight cold hells, and 84,000 miscellaneous hells located at the edge of the universe. The difference between hell in Chinese folklore and myth is that the suffering you have to endure is not indefinite, it depends on the severity of the sins you committed. After receiving due punishment, one will eventually be sent for reincarnation. Over time The Lord of Hell, Yama reduced the number of hells to ten. He divided Diyu into ten courts, each overseen by a Yama King, while he remained as the sovereign ruler of Diyu.

@@2apocalypsex actually that isn't much of a difference, according to tradition, all hells are temporary, modern Christians are just a bit confused about their own mythology (Jews, and Muslims, coming from the same general tradition, both cite hell as temporary and purifying -though in the Islamic case it is super brutal and can last a really, really long time).

I think James Hong must have been in over a hundred movies and TV episodes over the years, always loved his villains. He's one of those character actors who deserve better fame for all his work. There is a bit of Captain Ron here and Overboard but the one that I see the most is Snake Plisken! There's just more humor here and a young Kim Catrall was simply beautiful here. This is one of my favorite John Carpenter movies. I love how it bucks expectations by switching the roles of the hero and sidekick where the “hero” is the one out of his element and that his “sidekick” is the one who is in his element. That plus the way Carpenter and Russel chose to have Jack have all the ego and swagger but be completely clueless and for the most part ineffective like how in the big battle he knocks himself out and then is pinned under a dead body for most of the battle lol. Sadly at the time the film did poorly, in part because the ads were pretty bad and it was released opposite Aliens. Luckily over the years it has gone from being a cult classic to a more universally recognized film.

Fun Fact: Big Trouble was nominated for Best Movie Ever Made by the Academy Awards, but lost to Highlander. As others have already pointed out, The Mrs has great instinct. The original Mortal Kombat modeled their Raidan after the Storm named Lightning. The game's end boos named Shang Tsung is directly modeled after "Emperor" style Lo-Pan. In their early character design, they actually planned a Jack Burton stand-in for the games as well, but pulled it since they thought it would move them from homage to intellectual theft. If you thought the setting for this was weird, you got lucky. The original script for this had it set in the Chinatown of the old West, with Wang Chi as a rail road worker and Jack Burton as a gunslinger.

Back in the day a lot of truck drivers liked to just ramble on the CB. That's also illustrated in many different movies. Like Smokey and the bandit or Convoy. That's why they all have those funny name so that everyone knows who they're talkin to. We spend that much time alone on the road and you need someone to talk to. Yes some did not appreciate it but it was generally widely accepted

I love quoting this movie. I used to have a theme on my PC with sounds and images from this movie. I especially love Jack Burton's monologues at the start of the movie. :D

Fun Factoid: Kurt Russell is not even the hero in this movie, the guy Wang is the hero. Jack is just along for the ride. I think first favorite of John Carpenter's They Live then the Escape From series movies, New York then L.A.

I had a display at a big Con in New Jersey years ago and across the aisle from my table was Tom Savini with that creature in his booth. He created and built it for the movie. We talked all weekend whenever the fans gave us a break he is a very cool guy.

Movies were that way, back in the day. There wasn't a really long build-up in movies then. You were normally thrown into the movie and it would explain things as it went along.

Victor Wong was in Prince of Darkness, which is probably where Mrs Wife Lady recognized him from. Just like Dennis Dun was also in Prince of Darkness too. Carpenter was hoping Dunn would have become more famous, but he never did go on to bigger roles. This film has some actors though that weren't known to western viewers. Carter Wong, who plays Thunder, was from China and was in Kung Fu movies there. He also taught Martial Arts and even created his own fighting style. Suzee Pai that plays Miao Yin, was a cheerleader for the Eagles and Pet of the Month in the January, 1981 issue of Penthouse.

Mortal Kombat's Raiden was based on One of the Storms, Lightning. Three Storms, Thunder (The actor went on to be a Martial Arts instructor for the Hong Kong Police), Rain, and Lightning. When Rain appears, you can hear the rain in the audio.
