As many of them have said they still make mistakes, me and my wife have been rving about seven years now and we still make mistakes the key is to learn from those mistakes to prevent from making them again. Here is biggest mistake ... Hopefully this will help someone from making the same mistake. Before disconnecting our 5th wheel from my truck I always do a walk around to make sure the slide outs wont hit anything, to make sure I can reach the electric and sewer connection. We were fairly level (or so i thought) spot. I dropped the legs of the 5th wheel down to about 5 or 6 inches from the ground (this is the manual part where you line up a pin to a hole.). What I normally do at this point is to go to the button for the electric motor to lower the legs the rest of the way. However, for some unknown reason I pulled the lever back from the 5th wheel hitch to release the 5th wheel. Then the 5th wheel started rolling back, off the hitch and down into the bed of my truck. luckily, It only fell the 5 or 6 inches. but that was enough to put two holes in the from of the 5th wheel where it met my truck bed walls. So now BEFORE you ever pull the pin on the hitch, first chock the wheels, and make sure the front legs are on the ground.

Hello, well the challenges that you have over come I learned not to do in the military and as a big truck driver and a big bus operator. Some of those mistakes could get you fired, so you learn to be fully aware of what you are driving. Also was a driver teacher, that was very hard. When I drive my class C 32' foot long, I let the years of driving take over. Not to pat myself on the back, I managed to get a million accident free miles to my credit. My best advice is to do a triple walk around before you even start the engine, because you will have to pay for the accident of rushing away. Yes I've seen drivers drop a loaded 53' trl because they did'nt do a simple tug forward to make sure the pin was latched. As a new RV'er I will not park my rig in a truck stop where the drivers park, seen to many drivers that can't back or even pull forwards in leaving there spot and take out the front of the rig parked next to them. My challenge is getting to know all the RV places to stop at, thats why I take notes from you guys, watching the best places to stop at. I really enjoy that! Thanks you all for putting out your video's have learned a lot. God Bless and safe driving. :)

We’ve owned a 18’ travel trailer for 10 years and have made a lot of mistakes with it. I’ve cut a turn to tight in a mountain RV Park and snapped off the ends of the black and grey water dump pipes, drive to fast towing through a construction zone in the Sierra Nevada mountains and hit the awning poles against a barrier pushing the pole mounts into the side of the RV, drove off without raising one leveling jack and bent it. Ten years of lessons I’ll put to use this year as we upgrade to a 25’ class C!

I have the check list that Casita provided with my camper and I had it laminated so that I can check off all the necessary things. I pulled the handle on the black tank and the hose completely separated from the fitting. This meant a 4 inch stream of black water hit me ankle high filling my shoes! Moral of the story check the condition and security of the fitting to hose connection prior to dumping your tanks. That is one of a few all the worst things happened at night. This is our 5th year with our toyhauler so there have been a few. I will share 2 with you. Our toyhauler is a 33ft TT. About a year after we got it I upgraded pickups. We were in a Walmart parking lot and I turned way to sharp to the left. On the left side of the front of the TT is a ladder that sticks out a bit. Turning that sharp the ladder crunched the side of the pickup box right about the taillight. Luckily minimal damage to the truck and no damage to the ladder. Our single biggest mistake happened a few months ago November 12th 2018. Veterans day. We had been deer hunting at Nebraska National Forest. That Monday we had been out all day, got a deer, that process takes awhile so it was late cold and dark when packing up to head home. Sherrie always takes care of inside stuff while I do outside stuff. Truck was hitched up ready to pull forward so I could drop the rear ramp and get the ATVs parked inside. I told Sherrie I was pulling forward a bit. No big deal. Last thing I did was put the steps up. Pulled forward, parked ATVs inside, we both tied them down, I exited through the back ramp so I could put it up. Sherrie exited out the side door , it was dark, steps were up, she stepped out not knowing there wasn't a step. She fell all the way out. Luckily there was about 6 inches of snow on the ground to cushion her fall a tiny bit. No broken bones but she was definitely sore and bruised for several days. That's one huge mistake that will never be made again. This spring we are going to change steps to the kind that fold up into the doorway, they are more sturdy and nothing like that can happen again. Thanks for the great content. Happy camping. Cory
@todayissomeday6 жыл бұрын

My worst mistake was made two days ago. I connected the hose to put water in the fresh water tank and the black tank flush is right above the potable water inlet. Even though there is a caution sticker next to the black tank flush, guess what? I think you know. When I finally figured out what I had done, the toilet was full to the brim and just beginning to overflow. Yuk. Lesson learned and I'm sure that mistake won't ever happen again.

With regard to running out of electrical power; I don't have a rig yet, but something Robin of Creativity RV said has stuck in my mind: "ABC--Always Be Charging." Whether you're driving, have your computer, phone, etc. plugged in and charging; when you get to where you're going, set up your solar right away (if you have it) and/or run your gen set (if you have one), and charge things up during the daytime hours so you don't violate "quiet hours." Buying new a mistake? Not for me--I won't have a big budget for on the road, so (certain types of) repairs will need to be under warranty. I don't want interest and payments on the road--it will be an all-cash purchase when I sell my house. Depreciation isn't a concern, as I won't be 'trading up or down,' it will become my forever home, for better or worse. After I'm gone, it will be up to my kids what they want to do with it...use it or sell it...I won't care at that point. Buying too big? IMO, better too big than too small--I won't be in a position to buy again once the purchase is made; it will be my home until I'm feeble and can't drive anymore, at which point, I'll find a long-term parking solution, and stay there until I exit this "mortal coil." My biggest problem will be that I'll be traveling with my 80-year-old mother in law, who uses a walker, and won't be able to be running around outside with a walkie to guide me into parking spots; I'll essentially be solo. Also, it will be a steep learning curve for me, as I've never driven anything bigger than my F-150, and never towed anything bigger than a small U-Haul box trailer. :-O So, I'll be (at first) going slow enough to piss off all the drivers behind me....LOL Driving/Arriving at night after dark. Uh, yeah. I don't do LOOOONNNGG drives anyway; I need to stop for the day after about 3 or 4 hours on the road--even in my car. But yes, once when I was tent camping, I arrived after dark, and setting up the tent by flashlight, did not notice until the next morning that one of the tent stakes had gone squarely down an ant hill! The outside of the tent was covered in ants! Ugh! (Yes, I moved the tent!) I can laugh about it now--was not amused at the time. ;-)

You know that is a very good question. I think a lot avoid the thought of it because its scary to even imagine a scenario as you say. It most definitely pops into my mind as we prepare to go full time. I looked into Changing Lanes idea of motion cameras, however the system they have is not available in Canada, nor have I found anything similar here. Carrying a gun just adds another worry...so that pretty much leaves needing some kind of camera system to keep an eye on the place when out and about, and as for an intruder while inside {gulp}??? A baseball bat? Not enough info out there nor suggestions.

Everyone is different as far as how they handle personal safety. Most people do whatever they would do in a sticks and bricks. To be honest you weren't any safer there than you are in your RV. As long as you are not taking unnecessary risks your risks are really not that much different. It just seems that way because you are moving around. There are quite a few who travel with firearms and lights are great but if you are in close quarters you may be asked to turn them off.

Spykers B. I don’t like guns. Get a can of bee spray. It will shoot a stream over 20’. I keep a can by my front door now and in my bedroom.

If you were to go back would you buy a 37to39 ft. it seems like they have just that extra bathroom space?

If we could find a used one at the right price, YES! We loved the Tiffin just slightly bigger than ours with the walk through bathroom. We found this one (this model was also on our list) at the right price and went for it.

@thethortour24946 жыл бұрын
Bob Herbert I have that question too!
@todayissomeday6 жыл бұрын
There are a few to choose from. It just depends on how many steps you are willing to take to make the car ready to tow. We want as few as possible which only leaves 2 options: Jeep or Fiat. Here is the guide to help you in your decision. It lists the steps required with the flat towable cars: www.motorhome.com/download-dinghy-guides/ good luck with your search!

@@todayissomeday Thanks guys for this quick response. Well, I think the Fiat would be out as we have three dogs with travel with and the wife is frowning on riding on the roof so I guess I'll check out the Jeep, lol I will also definitely go to the link you provided also. As far as steps to get something tow ready, as FEW as possible!!!! Again thank you guys and I hope that when you make you journeys to the west coast they are close by to us so we came meet. We really do enjoy watching your videos. Safe journeys.....

I don't think I'll have a toad; I'm more leaning toward a 5th wheel at this point, but if I did, I'd want a full dolly, with the car driven up onto the tow dolly, so as not to have to mess around with 'towing tires' and then changing them to 'driving tires' at every destination. Being towed DOES add significantly to tire wear...

the biggest mistake most rvers make is taking their rigs out on the road BEFORE they know how to drive it ( & some never learn ) they are DANGEROUS, & shouldn't laugh @ their ineptitude. Driving an 18 wheeler over a million mile i can tell ya some stories... but i only took out one ; ) IMO... rvers should have CDL's... & some people should NEVER own an rv... period.. because it isn't funny ; )
@todayissomeday5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we have see a couple of crazy things to but what we have seen all relates to big rigs. I guess we are paying attention now unlike before. So many cars cut us and rigs off and try to squeeze in a 50 mph when there is no room. I cant believe people dont realize the danger because these big rigs cant just stop on a dime. We have a new respect for truck drivers since jumping into the RV.
