It’s so interesting to hear how the training builds up and the differences in each of the dogs and ways to try and work with them to encourage them to get it right.

I’ve just taken possession of a two year old well bred working Cocker . I reckon he’s been kenneled and very little attention up to now . As with retrieving, zero interest. Training puppies up to 6 months is something I’m familiar with. This with a two year old is going to be starting from basics . Hopefully he’ll respond. Cracking Working Cocker . Great video, very informative 👌🇮🇪

Thank you for this topic Charlie. My puppy, Tiree, now 9 months old but still very mentally immature (Gordon Setter x GWP - both breeds slow to mature so perfectly normal for her), does exactly the same as Triad. She loves to retrieve, but gets bored quickly with a tennis ball or dummy, LOVES a rabbit fur ball and especially loves to bring me deceased creatures (so far - a couple of rabbits, a rabbit leg, a mouse and an unfeathered chick which had fallen from the nest in a mature beech - she never spits these out) she finds while out on walks. She does spit retrieves (ball/dummy) within a couple of feet from me, so I'll try easing off any perceived pressure, use the rabbit ball more and buy more rabbit dummys. One walk recently, she found a sadly deceased Skylark in a stubble field and stood sniffing it, unsure what to do. I picked it up and gave it to her. She trotted around in a circle, carrying the Skylark proudly, then stopped and sat at my feet while still holding the bird. Maybe I should start collecting roadkill/her favourite deceased furry/feathered creatures and keeping them in the freezer 🤔😂.

p.s. She does have the potential to be a good all round gundog once mature and fully trained. Looks more like and covers open ground like a Setter, but thinks and works like a GWP. She's confident at a distance away from me but also likes to work fairly closely (I count her training as working while she's learning). Loves water (has GWP webbed feet), marks any bird she sees flying overhead. She points rabbits/wood pigeon/deer/game birds/ducks/etc. She works scent in the air while quartering then freezes on point when she finds the source (she has shown 3 different pointing styles so far depending on what she's pointing). Happy in both open countryside and dense woodland and not phased about getting into thick cover. Not bad for a chance find on a popular pet selling site (and didn't break the bank either). My gundog trainer wishes she was his 😎

So nice to see a cocker with a bit of meat on! Mine is chunky like that but you see so many tiny skinny cockers these days

Would love to see how you manage a Smudge that doesn’t want to give up the retrieve. My female springer thinks it’s way more fun to play keep away than give up her prize

How do you go about "telling a dog off"? that's something you've talked about, and I'm interested in what that means.

Are there issues with keeping multiple boys? I have a 5yo boy and the breeder suggested a female puppy to avoid conflict between them

Mine has no issue retrieving it's a problem handing it over . He just won't give anything back, and if we're home in the garden, he will run in the house and hide the item in his bed ,

Had this exact issue. I solved it after an enclosed training lane in the garden for a couple of weeks. Loads of praise, didn't rush taking the dummy from the mouth.
