Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his KZbin videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

Found 7 Garcia Mitchell 330's (two otomatic) that had belonged to my wifes grandfather. We're in our mid-60's so these reels are old. My wife fished with them from a row boat when she was a child. Using a couple of youtube videos I learned how to strip them done completely (not the bail - they all worked well and just needed a little oil). All of the grease had aged in them but 5 were actually pretty clean. Two were excessive grease that looked like cooking oil or ear wax. Fortunately by completely disassembling them all that grease was removed, wd40 cleaned them up nicely. Regreased and reassembled they are like new! I'm looking forward to fishing with these in our lake with the new boat! Will be thinking positive thoughts about my wife's grandfather and his love for freshwater fishing. thanks for the video!

I'm 67 years old and use Zebco and Johnson reels all the time. Thanks for this. Have you ever thought of writing a book on this subject?

When I took my 330 apart there was a stack of like 7 shims, mostly paper thin. So many gears it's almost like a Rube Goldberg machine. They're fun to cast once you get the hang of it.

I have a Mitchell 330 that I really like though it took me some time to det used to casting with the “Ottomatic” bail. This particular reel has the best baffle plate with five positions installed. I learned about these Ottomatic from a man in Hawaii who specialized]s in these particular Mitchells. I want to eventually get a 440A someday. You weren’t kidding about this being what I call a “grease bucket.” It doesn’t even look like fishing reels grease and more like axle grease. I’m surprised you did not remove the slide plate over the axle shaft channel. It’s just two screws. I do understand your reasons though. This is a beautiful Mitchell 330! I’d love to watch you cast the reel for the first time. LOL Great job Rick.

i think that Johnson Century 40th Anniversary Edition was one of the last of that series produced here in Mankato where I live. After that they moved production offshore in 1996.Wish they could have stayed here in Mankato. I know a couple folks who used to work at Johnson Reels.

I like the bail system on that Mitchell and push button spool. I wonder why they went away from quick releasing spools like that. My Cardinal MX130R and Cardinal C1R were the first and only reels I've had that had quick releasing spools like that.
