The sad thing is that it's not only retail investors who knowingly used FTX who will lose their money, but totally unsuspecting people whose pension funds also invested in his scheme. I believe there's a Canadian teachers' retirement fund that lost $95m of their members' money in this debacle.

Not sure what Canadian laws are like, but whoever is in charge of that fund has a fiduciary duty to the teachers. If investing in crypto isn’t a violation of that duty, then nothing is!

It’s a huge fund so that amount is just a drop in the bucket. They have a very diverse portfolio of assets across all classes, so not surprising that they’d have a bit in something as risky and speculative as crypto.

@@PeteC62 it’s a defined benefit plan, so when the teachers retire they will get an annual pension of 2% of their annual pay for every year they worked as a teacher, or so, and then it increases with inflation, what they will get is not dependent on how the fund performs.

Don't invest in anything that rents a room with a chandelier, either - see Harvey Mackay's Swimming With The Sharks, a good easy business read. In one brief chapter he noted the huge amount of money the entrepreneurs were spending (or rather, wasting) on the venue to woo investors for a basketball team that never materialized. The author walked out during the sales pitch and turned out to be intuitively right. The moral was "too much too soon is too little too late." Same with a Hollywood talent agency that tanked in a year. The guy who started it had recently been released from prison after his last agency went rogue. It had been hugely successful, like FTX. But he got criminally greedy, like Bankman-Fried. The new agency kept things clean but he put it together like I once furnished an apartment that I left after only 6 months - by spending 3 hours in Walmart.

There won't be much analysis or investigation of this scoundrels unethical & illegal dealings because of his political connections & let's face it, do u really think the democrat led DOJ under Joe Biden will lead an investigation into a guy who is the democrat parties top donor next to George Soros? Lol. This story will just go away. The top bankruptcy lawyer who dealt with the Enron crimes, illegal dealings & assets sales said that the cover up of Sam Bankrupt-Frieds crimes, which were obvious & went on for the last 2 years, make the Enron scandal & cover up look like the scrubbing of a traffic violation. And Bloombergs top financial writer said that the wiping out of 37 BILLION dollars in just a few days is not just the greatest collapse in fortune BY FAR in recorded financial history, but also SCREAMS the greatest scandal in recorded financial history. And let's also not forget that SBF also had a direct working relationship with Ukraine's (No Joke) "Ministry of Digital Transformation" in which he oversaw the conversion of crypto currency donations to fund Ukraine's war efforts!!!! And isn't it quite a coincidence that just a few months after sending Ukraine 14 BILLION dollar & 50 BILLION dollar "aid packages" Ukraine begged the US for another 37 BILLION dollars the very same week that SBF "lost" 37 BILLION dollars & Biden rubber stamped the aid request and just sent Ukraine another 37 BILLION! Yeah. I'm sure the unbiased media will be all over trying to investigate these connections.

Invest as much as you can afford to lose. Democrat checks from this kid obviously did not bounce just as Hillary invested a grand and it made 19 grand overnight and turned into 100 grand in a year all in cattle futures then Bill becomes gov of Arkansas. Pelosi's made millions overnight last year on Wall Street not withstanding scrutiny by lawmakers in the House which Nancy is Speaker of. Adam Schiff is keeper of all evidence and who is paying for storage warehouses for evidence of public enemy number Donald Trump?? Democrats have dismantled the 3 branches and jumbled them together while they try to prove a government overthrow attempt by Trump who ran the government for 4 years! Of course the FBI infiltrates every criminal organization to make sure crimes are committed correctly. The FBI tells the military to back off since the FBI has the coup in control and running smoothly! America is market savvy right? This punk can see into the financial future while internet "journalists" are predicting the US need not drop hydrogen bombs on Japan as they are preparing to surrender in 1945! I predict Americans will still not grasp inflation and save their dollars as they become less valuable in our "free market" system daily. Regulating a free market cancels the "free market" part. Prices rise and your dollar won't be enough to purchase so wait until you need more dollars for the same purchase. Do not mention underwater oil and gas pipelines Russia controls because nobody can see underwater. Climate change means no more cold winters. We will see soon if Europe stays warm this winter. If it should turn to freezing cold Russia will fix pipelines and supply free energy to all. I predict NOT! I do predict nobody will still figure out Microsoft's Zillow will still be invisible and 400% increase in housing "valuations" by zillow is a myth and zillow's competitors are not owned by zillow, still, as far as you know. Invest all you have until you have no money to worry about. Hire yourself to work at home if you can afford a home. I wish I were kidding you people but I will diagnose you but only partially: you all are only half crazy. You pay for printing of money loaned to president Biden and given to banks who loan it again to you and you pay more tax on what you buy and tax rates go up because inflated dollar is worth less and Biden will tell you to blame wealthy people who certainly cannot pay the national debt which is 35 trillion and rising.

Effective altruism sounds wholesome and helping others like that appeals to our noble, virtuous side. Very sad for the regular folks who lost their money and not a good look for the celebs who hawked it to their adoring fans. And that's another lesson here, just because people can score points in a paid athletic contest doesn't qualify them to pitch a risky investment. I mean, colas or cars or vacations at Disneyland, sure, just not this sort of thing which involves real money from real people, yikes.

I’m kinda shocked that you watch this channel and think that’s sound analysis, just because you heard a voice- listened to that voice and “subsequently” Bitcoins value fell after you cashed out- doesn’t prove crypto or even Bitcoin is not a legitimate currency or investment. Bitcoin has fallen before and still has the potential to regain that value, central banks and governments are designing their own crypto- I think this is a much better reflection on the value of crypto than the “voice in your head” - no offence. And I’m glad you got out when you did, I’m just trying to point out that these set of actions doesn’t reflect the value of Bitcoin.😊

@@Vgallo No need to be shocked or even surprised. The voice in my head was NOT an analysis of bitcoin complete with flow charts, graphs, algorithms and the like. I am firmly grounded in reality BUT I know the limitations of it. The "voice in my head was a deep intuitive knowing that it was time FOR ME to cancel that investment. Was it correct? Yes. Bitcoin slid down and I would have lost money. Some could argue that it could have gone up and I would have missed gains but that proves a point. What if I had woken up, heard the voice and told a friend-who would, like you have likely said "Oh no bitcoin is going places yada yada yada and then, to be liked or go along I went against the voice and stayed invested. There were people all over the place screaming for folks to get bitcoin and a few people did make money. Same thing happened with Tesla. Same voice. Same wake up call. I didn't tell or consult anyone else. I sold and almost doubled my money and got out. Tesla has had problems since. Because it’s value is only there when people believe it’s there. If a company doesn’t make anything and has no tangible real assets it’s value is mostly in the minds of investors. I don’t know how FTX worked exactly either but if they allowed people to transfer their bitcoins into their own currency as it seems it could be like someone buying a million dollars worth of bitcoins from you when it was lower and then asking to withdraw their money when your investment was worth 100 million. If there is a run with people like that you’ll soon have no money left to pay everyone. Even if the value of their own currency was crashing and you were holding that. Not forgetting he seems to have used customers money to finance his trades and buyouts all the while losing their money on the quiet which would make paying people out even harder.

Very informative video, thank you for the breakdown. I was NEVER attracted to the idea of investing in crypto. Call me crazy, but all I've done for most of my adult life is work a blue collar job, invest a decent portion of my earnings in a home purchase, a Roth IRA, and a couple rental properties. Now at age 53, I certainly never became a billionaire, but I can now live comfortably knowing that I'll never have to struggle in retirement... and for me, that's good enough.

I am always confused about this "net worth" stuff. If the money can disappear in a matter of hours, how can it be real wealth? Can you "cash out" some of that net worth at some point? Why not do that rather than have imaginary holdings? If I had a "net worth" of $1 billion, I would cash out as much of it as I could while I could. That is, of course, unless that's not possible.

It's based on expected perceived value over time into the future. Effectively earning potential over time. Example, if you were a robot, with all of your current abilities intact, the person that created you could sell you for an insane amount of money, many times over cost of parts and labor used to build you because of the amount of wealth you would generate over time. Yes there is risk involved because nobody can guarantee expected outcomes in the future. That's what Musk was doing a few years ago with auto pilot, increasing the price at the time by several thousand and telling people to "lock in now" at a small premium and when level 5 full autonomous driving came, you would get that upgrade and your vehicle would be worth much more than what you paid for it. New ones would be priced well over 100k because of the value they would bring owners. Mostly companies with a fleet of them for providing transportation services to the impoverished masses. But all the hype over self driving cars has seemed to vanish, hasn't it? It's kinda funny. MAYBE some day, I rather hope not, in spite of the neat factor and convenience, but that's a whole different story...

His wealth was built on investor money soon as run on his business where investors demanded money back by selling (what's known as a run on the bank,). Once that happened his worth collapsed because it was built on fractional lending. He also loaned investoronry into his high risk investment firm and used his crypto firm as a personal piggy bank. Ponzi schemes always operate similarly. They need huge cash infusions to keep it going to feed the illegal activity of paying huge returns to generate more investors. That's how I understand it. It was as Dr grande says a shell game

Most cryptocurrencies are the opposite of anonymous. They rely on the fact there's an open ledger of all the transactions, and ownership of the money is auditable by everyone. There are privacy-focused coins like Monero, which makes it challenging to analyze by implementing the CryptoNote protocol, but that's a slim minority of crypto coins. Paper money is still a much better choice for most anonymous transactions, assuming you have some way of exchanging physical money.

Yup, nothing will happen to him. It will be just like the 2 Federal Reserve officials that were recently caught insider trading... their punishment... they had to retire. US citizens sit silently while the Federal Reserve (which is not federal at all, it's a private institution) steals their money and wreaks future generations. In the last few years we have printed trillions of dollars and do we have anything to show for it? Better healthcare? Better infrastructure? Better schools? Is our standard of living any better? Nothing... but hey, the 1%ers made more money. We sit silent while congress members have better returns in the stock market than the professionals. They are allowed to trade based on laws that they enact. They have figured out the recipe for control.... work them to death so people just want too come home and have a drink and watch TV, make them afraid (covid, China, Russia, etc) and get them to fight with one another (dem vs rep, abortion, etc.). Put it all together and what do you haver? Total control!!

I don't know how rigorous of a review Sequoia's audit could have been if it ignored the fact that none of the many companies SBF was running kept healthy business records. I mean any GAAP-trained accountant would be able to figure out that the balance sheets didn't look right. I guess it makes sense, when you can print up money overnight, the basic accounting formula (Assets=Liabilities + Equity) doesn't really mean anything. Also, visionaries are overrated, they have the oddest way of dying in the most preventable of circumstances.

Sam Bankman-Fried was never really successful in the first place. To me, anyone in their 30s living with 9 roommates, sleeping only on couches, and playing videogames while making deals on the phone is essentially a failure regardless of how much money he makes - failure being defined as falling short of one's potential on the inside of oneself, not on the outside. It shows how wrong it is to think in terms of how much money anyone's worth. The only thing that ever really matters is what we're worth as human beings, not as income earners. Sam Bankman-Fried's true worth all along was revealed in the final outcome...bankruptcy.
