@@blackmarketarmy Please dont. Selfie narcissism is hands down primarily a female problem. Yes, you have men engaging in it to but nowhere NEAR at the nauseating levels that women do. If you think it's "both genders" because you see men here and there with selfie sticks and making fools of themselves at he gym - you're clearly not really that deep into social media enough to see how selfie culture is damn near a mental illness at this point with women. People need to stop using the term narcissism when what they really should be saying is vanity. Narcissists do not have to be vain and narcissism is more about dominate personalities that manipulate other people and cannot processes self criticism, they bring down other people's confidence and hearts and they can never admit to their own faults.. Narcissism is way more complex than just some girls taking selfies because they are overly obsessed with their own image.

Women take selfies to be more known in their social clique. Socialization is very important to women, people's perception of them is based on how they look. This is why a lot of women wear makeup daily and wear uncomfortable high heels. Just look at the big instagram stars, they didn't become famous until they got plastic surgery to get "hot". People like Kim Kardashian and Iggy Azaelia wouldn't be known today, had they not gotten cosmetic surgery. They would just be another average woman. Being adored fills a gap in most people lives if they grew up very insecure.

@starstone78 жыл бұрын
你好オレンジ Narcissism is about much more than that, narcissism means extreme love of self or the over glorification of self esteem (which means self ego), the act of elevating self esteem is narcissism, and it is wrong for people, who are not the source of existence, to elevate self esteem. Narcissists get insecure when they don't get to elevate self esteem, it is one of the reasons why they abuse people, thus this is why feminazis abuse people (mostly men).

I believe society has created this problem, of vanity and entitlement. We have told our children that they are great, and wonderful just the way they are. Of course, this is not true in the real world. Greatness is defined by what you do. It is not inherent. You may have been endowed by your creator with all the tools to be virtuous and accomplished, to make a positive contribution to society. Whether your character and conduct are consistent with virtue, has everything to do with how you choose to behave. What we ought to be telling our children, is that we love them, and that they have the potential to be virtuous and accomplished, if they choose to. We should encourage them to do so. We may always love them, and by love them, I mean, do what is in their best interest. However, whether or not we respect and admire them, is the result of their behaviour. Everyone may deserve to be treated with courtesy, and not mistreated. However, respect is earned, and rewards must be achieved. When we encourage our children to cultivate their character, and value a work ethic as the means to achieving their goals, we give them the tools for self-respect and self-worth.

the difference between an object and a subject is that a subject can act on its own, while any action experienced by the object is initiated by a subject. Yet, feminism are portraying the story of men objectifying women as the problem, while the proposed solutions always has to do with everything but the women in question. The irony here is that this solution, in it self is the problem, in effect its treating women as objects that need an external force to take action. If you dont want to be objectified, then stop "acting" like an object, and start acting like a subject.
@mkaur69987 жыл бұрын
That's very thought provoking. However don't you feel that 'objectification' is actually taught subconsciously at a very young age? At an age when little girls and boys are too young to control their own perception of 'object' vs 'subject'. Isn't that the real reason why we feel the responsibility to be carefull about gender narratives because we re looking out for how it affects younger people and children, when their identities are still being formed.I don't feel feminism is a 'problem' just because it points out the objectification as an issue. It could be that people have a hard time understanding just how this 'objectification' effects people. And that is exactly what the speaker is saying - that we need to look at society to understand this type of narcissisms root process.

Dear Lord, I'm a wiman, and having the right to take a selfie without being judges is really not a way to show how awesome women are .. Selfies are stupid, unless you're having fun with another person or in a group, and keep to a few, and not everyday, and about everything. I find it SHUTTING when people post many selfies, and non of their children - not that I'm asking for daily pictures of their babies either...

Our society has a lot of flaws, most definitely. And I fear it will only get worse with the rise of virtual reality technology. The real reason behind this is that our brain has NOT evolved much in the last 100, 000 years. We are hard wired for simple tribal community life, not separatism and individualism as seen in the West. We can't cope with the rise of technology. That's why some radical changes should take place, and probably will in the 1000 years or so. Some of these changes will be a complete shift of values from materialistic to spiritual, and android technology that will aide our brain with filling the evolutionary gap we currently have.

I have worked around and closely with many women over my business career. A consistent comment that many women made was that they did not like working with or for other women and most preferred working for a man. Many women I have known have also stated that women are crazy. These comments were made without me asking or soliciting the comment. With that being said, I offer a quote from one of my favourite movies. In the movie, “As good as it gets”, Jack Nicholson, who plays a writer in the movie, is just leaving the publisher. The young female receptionist asks Nicholson a question. Receptionist: “How do you write women so well?” Nicholson: “I think of a man and I take away reason and accountability.”

I don't think she excuses narcissism like so many people are commenting. More than once she states the dangers of narcissism. She does explain where women narcissism comes from though. I am annoyed by it like everybody else. But men do it too, in a different way, and seemingly in a way that doesn't bother society as much. How many men out there on social media posting every single day how many miles they ran, the number of pushups they did, shirtless pictures of themselves working out etc.? And they probably do so for similar reasons than women do. I think we all have a propensity to be narcissist, men and women. Just different forms.

If I understand her argument correctly, then one could use Jordan Peterson's statement(s): Equal opportunity vs equal outcome. Its detrimental if we force outcomes. He further discusses that as societies become more egalitarian we see more differences between men and women. Men interested in things, Women interested in people/ families etc. If women want the representation in politics then they need to work for it, because they have the opportunity for it.

Can't help feeling that if this was a term paper, it'd fail. Starting with a conclusion, not examining the validity (or relevance) or external sources, cherry-picking data points, and mostly assertions without reasoning to back them up. It also feels somewhat self-serving to hear somebody who's being paid to research the selfie obsession assert that we _really_ need research into the selfie obsession. I hope that the resulting research paper is more rigorous than this talk, if only for the sake of the folk funding it.

Well, truth is looks fade, so I predict the young weomen will get over it. Hopefully they are actually enjoying their lives and not being obsessed with their appearance. I think life is a journey of finding self love, and being a loving person to others. Getting complimented on ones appearance builds a shallow confidence, but no more than that. The flawless looking-are just that. Nothing to be put on a pedestal! The true beauty is in ones character...anyone agree?!!

430 male chauvinists flocked to the video because of its title, expecting women to be criticized. Got disappointment when the speaker just objectively spoke about the 'selfie phenomenon'. And just to highlight, she is saying that the 'society' has coaxed women to care overtly about their looks. 'Society' consists men and women, and if you misheard it as 'men's' fault, it just shows your patriarchal view of the world where 'society' is represented by men alone.
