For people wondering why they didnt blow up because their first Album was fire. Well this is around the time when Rocafella was splitting up. Upper management was in a swirl trying to figure out were the artists were going to go when Jay-Z was on his way out the door. The Breakup started to get public when Camron came to Rockafella around 2002. By 04 it was a wrap. Their album came out in 04. Throughout History rap groups tend to not last forever however we could of gotten at least 2 more great album from them that is if they decided to go solo like they all do. I always felt that the Rocafella break up played a part of the decline in hip hop. When rocafella split a lot of philly ny nj artists were lost, then Lil John and the boys, ying yang twins all came in and dropped mad records and they were cool but instead of people competing everybody decided to copy them and every record started to sound Southern like because the south was dominating for while and people thought that was thing to do. But in reality the North was all divided up. Jay-Z quest for the King of NY title came at a price for every up North Artist at the time.
@mattmolloy6368 жыл бұрын
Raislive Rocafella was breaking down while Cam was still running with Un Rivera, years before he signed with the Roc. Cam wasn't a catalyst to the demise of the label, his situation was more of a symptom of the changes going on at the time. Jay was trying to figure out how to get up out from under Dame and Biggs ever since he realized how much fatter his pockets would be if they weren't a continual part of the Def Jam deal. He needed them to get the label off the ground and build it up into a household name, but the moment Def Jam came into the picture he realized that they weren't an integral part of keeping the machine going. All he had to do from the jump was rap, and Dame & Biggs did the rest; once Def Jam put their business acumen and marketing dollars behind the brand, Dame and Biggs became obsolete. It was bound to happen either way, with or without Cam'ron/ Dipset being in the picture.
@Raislive8 жыл бұрын
Elijah Evans Kanye is holding down for Hov but at the time Jay didnt take Kanye seriously. Kanye been producing for rocafella back in 1999 and was always just the guy that makes beats. It was Dame that pushed him because Kanye always wanted to rap he just couldnt get anybody to believe in him. Jay only got a hold of kanye because he was on fire when college drop out came out and Jay is the type of dude to always want to be around whatever artists that is popping. Its all business to Jay. Kanye still makes dope music when he wants.
@Raislive8 жыл бұрын
matt molloy I feel you. Im not saying Cam broke up rocafella I was just putting things into perpective of what was going on around the time young guns came out. Everything you said is right on though. Artits like the young guns just got the shit end of the stick with all the commotion
@mattmolloy6368 жыл бұрын
Raislive I think part of it had to do with Cam'ron being more boss minded than most else. Even someone like Beans, who had State Property as a record label imprint, clothing line & movie production, was always looking for someone to negotiate his deals. Cam, Jim, and Zeke rushed in and started calling their own plays, and Jay didn't like that because they were supposed to be under him. The Dipset affiliates are the only ones who were able to come out of the Roc split off their own strength and do better than they did during their time with Roc/Def Jam. Most of the artists that were on the Roc made the bulk of their career money during their tenure there, aside from Cam'ron and Dipset. I'm not counting Kanye because he didn't build off his own muscle, and Jay kept him around to milk and reciprocated with the offer of stability that only he could give him as the president of Def Jam. The Dips were the only real hustlers on the label, and they would have blown and done well regardless of what label they decided to stand next to. Dudes like the Young Gunz were just artists, and they just wanted to rap without being savvy on the business end. It's a shame too, bc they could have had more staying power if they worked on calling their own shots instead of taking orders.
@TheRealest1278 жыл бұрын
Raislive it's funny you say this because I was actually talking to some friends about 2 months ago and I said that Jay-z "Retiring" that first time kind of left The east coast in Limbo because I don't think anyone was strong enough to replace him. He kind of "retired" at not only his peak but NYCs peak at the same time. We had Cam and Dipset but they weren't No Jay-Z. We had Fabolous but he just wasn't powerful enough to be a Jay-Z. We had the Lox and 50 Cent but 50's novelty began to wear off somehow and the Lox just held it NYC down but they didn't make NYC rise if you feel what I'm saying. Nas Just kinda sat back and let it all happen with his easy going nature and even made a damn album called "Hip Hop is Dead" And not a single one of those "Smack DVD" rappers from NYC were nowhere near good enough to sit in that throne. Maybe Joe Budden could have if he wasn't such an emotionally unstable person. So All those years without a Jay-z gave an opportunity for something new and fresh and different to take shit over. And that was the When the South came in. Lil Jon, Yin Yang, Jeezy, T.I., Ross, Plies etc. So I know that what I'm saying in some way connects to what you said. Do you agree?
