I really want to get into doing my own- my biggest problems is what to start with, making sure I'm keeping with the same products to begin to ensure no issues, getting the tools and not running up the bank. Like I feel like I'm going to need to buy from one place over a long period to get everything just to start off

After having acrylics removed and doing gel manicures at home, my polish was lifting so I came here to see what I was doing wrong. This video was extremely helpful. I applied two coats of base polish to provide a stronger foundation and learned the importance of prep work. I keep looking at my nails with pride. Thank you for sharing these tips!

I just started this video so I'm SO glad I see a comment that let's me know these work, and know I'm not wasting 15 mins watching this lol. Also what are you doing? Just your natural nails? I'm doing polygel for the first time EVER. I've never even tried doing my own nails before and my first set came out better than most SALONS do & the "unicorn chrome" powder I used & rhinestones I put on would have ***EASILY*** cost me around $80 (esp for a full set & not a fill). Plus its literally almost been a MONTH & i only have a SMALL amount of lifting on my pinky nail from hitting it off something. All the other nails are so grown out (lol) but COMPLETELY really still ON there. I'm literally AMAZED... I used to get my nails done at the salon for literally 15 plus yrs & a set NEVER lasted me longer than 2 weeks (& THAT'S pushing it) without lifting, chipping, cracking or just completely coming off smh. I am SOO glad I came across a polygel video & started really watching bc I bought a polygel starter kit that came w everything you need even a lamp, I got a drill & both for under $100. I'm so obsessed I ordered a TON more fun stuff for them (like diff polygel colors (literally a ton lmao, like neons, pastels, glitters),all different kinds of shapes & colors of rhinestones, little decorations & decals, I got a set of gel polishes (or maybe 2 or 3 😳😂🤣) but it's SOOOO worth it that I'll NEVER have to step in a salon AGAIN & honestly half the time I either left not liking my nails. Whether it was the way they shaped them, or the design/color even (I'm just one of those ppl who won't complain lol smh) & I'd notice they were either crooked, or lumpy in a spot or two, or they weren't fully painted like from sidewall to sidewall) & STILL always tipped good smh. This was so worth it. Sorry for the super long comment lol I'm just so passionate about certain things (makeup, hair, nails, dupes for "high end" crazy expensive stuff, tips & tricks for things I've learned to make my life easier on any & everything lol, & colored contacts...haha) I actually have a KZbin channel. It's pretty small but growing & it's mainly reviewing colored contacts right now but next time I do my nails (which will be very soon) & when I get this order shipped to me of some new makeup I just ordered which will also be soon like tomorrow or the next day) I'm planning on making videos about all of that stuff and really expanding my content. My biggest problems with salons has always been that they pile on products (acrylic, gel), and my nails get so thick that When I try to scratch an itch, it’s like rubbing a ball on my skin (for lack of better metaphor). I love a sharp edge and my nails looking real but long. I am a terrible peeler of gel too so it has to just blend all around the edge. Where I live there are no true nail artists. Can’t even find many that do flowers (just stickers). I love doing my own nails and have learned to do ombré and flowers from KZbin. It’s meditative and I can quickly fix any chipping myself (or worse when I have anxiety and start peeling it). My right hand is always harder of course, as a right-handed person. I’m also always doing home projects and gardening that would quickly destroy and professional manicure. I like when someone comments my nails and I can truly say thank you because I did it myself. It’s such an expensive thing to have someone else do. If you can learn to do what you like it is so worth it!! Also far less risk of an infection from some random salon not taking care of their tools or those videos of cutting cuticles to harsh redness. I don’t ever cut my cuticles and they are fine and not noticeable.

So true. That’s why I decided to learn to do my own. When I’d get them done at the salon they’d start peeling after a few days. When I do them myself it takes me 30-40 minutes but they last a whole 2 weeks at least! It’s really worth learning to do your own if you can’t find a good salon.

Just recently starting doing my nails again, after discovering gel polish and how fast it dries compared to old-school nail polish. I've never gotten the "peeling" or "lifting" issue, however it's been hard re-learning the dexterity to not end up with polish all over the edges of my fingers, especially when using my left hand to do my right nails! I try to clean them up before curing, because it definitely hardens the gel onto the flesh, which gets HOT, but sometimes I miss a spot, and I've had to resort to using the stuff that's meant to remove gel polish from nails in like 5 minutes. And that does work, it lets you scrape off the missed spots, but damn it burns! It also does what you said, if the part that's misplaced is on the cuticle, it leaves a ridge that I CANNOT leave alone, so I end up trying to file it smooth right there at the cuticle. That works, if I don't go crazy with the file, but it can leave the base of the nail a little unsightly, if I'm not very careful. My nails have always been thick and strong, but as I've gotten older, I've noticed that they're a little thinner and more bendy than they used to be, and a couple of them developed odd quirks like a vertical split, or starting to peel and get ragged at the tip, which meant that for those nails, I could never grow them long. Builder in a Bottle is a godsend, allowing me to grow even my troublesome nails long! A few of my other nails have the vertical ridges, which is very unsightly with regular polish, but again, Builder in a Bottle to the rescue! It smoothes them so nicely, you'd never know that their natural state has those ridges. I've got some of the thicker Builder, but it seems to be harder to learn how to use it. Maybe in time, with more experience, I can use the thicker Builder gel more expertly. My biggest issue is my perennially ragged cuticles. I started back doing my nails just so I could finally, hopefully, stop picking at the damn things, but so far that hasn't happened. I got some of the Sally Hansen cuticle remover, and use the "buffing" bit in my efile to try and remove/smooth those cuticles, and they're better, but still having issues. I can't understand how all the nail models have such perfect, nearly cuticle-less nails!

Bought my first gel polish setup today, and decided to have a go with about 2.5 hours before work. The learning curve was *steep* but I'm pretty proud of how they came out despite teaching myself on the fly. I'm watching this video after work, even though I won't be changing my polish for at least a week. My biggest mistake was picking up too much base coat, the first finger (my pinky) is THIOCC. But I'm stoked to have a more durable option since my line of work fucks up my nails within a couple of days.

Great video. I love being able to do gel nails at home. I just learned that I need to clean up my polish on my skin before curing. I usually just pick it off over the next couple of days but I never thought that is starting to lift the polish. I usually have great luck and I’m bored before the polish comes off. At least 2wks. But my last manicure it was peeling within 48 hrs. I think it was my bonding polish or whatever it’s called. The liquid you put on before the base coat or as you said it might be my light. It’s probably 3 years old and I don’t use it much but it might be time for a new one. Anyway great video. I appreciated it. Thanks :)

LOVE these tips Tracy! 💖 I have seen every one of these instances in the salon! Great job Tracy! I recommend this video to anyone using gel 💖 I’d like to add, these tips are absolutely 💯 % essential! But nothing can save you from clients that don’t want what you have to do for their service, ie. an extra base or top coat for flexible nails. In that case I would add an additional tip of client communication! I have definitely had clients try to talk me against what I would recommend for their nails, including a better foundation for their service like extra base coat or a harder enhancement. Techs will run into this, and you have to be clear to your client your recommendation, and that they cannot expect the same results with something you wouldn’t recommend for them! Because, not every client has the same nails, they can’t always get and expect the same results as their friend Sally 🙃

Omg I think I found my problem. I'm teaching myself nails and I've done about ten polygel dual form sets💙 I work during the day n wash my hands a lot but my nails don't even last a week. I finally think I know my problem. That little bit of gel on my skin, after curing, is make the entire nail lift off by pulling it! Less is always more with nails I'm starting to realize more and more. Gotta make a very thin cuticle area and if there is any polygel that squeezes out, I gotta get it the heck off my surrounding skin before curing.

Hey there, I specialize in colored acrylic, ive recently added gel polish to my services. These struggles are very frustrating. My major struggle has been protein bond on the whole nail then soaking off & IT DOES NOT COME OFF! I guess I forget about replacing my bulbs also. I always try to remember that thinner is better when doing gel polish. I never realized that gel polish on acrylic still needed texture😳 This video has helped so much!! Thank you 😘

When I was a kid I used to buy polish and didn't understand why some dried goopy and others didn't. Gell wasn't very well labeled. Usually there'd be a wall stand of polish, with a brand name signed above and on the bottles. But the labels below the bottles only had the price and colour name... no mention anywhere of whether it was gell or acrylic. I only realized gell exists, and needed UV to dry, once my town got internet in 2010 and I started watching youtube videos.

Thank you for this! I can't tell you how many videos I've watched that encourage atleast one of these no-no's. I've seen a few that encouraged all of them. The videos were even taught by pros saying it was to teach people the right way to do nails yourself. I appreciate y'all for explaining how to properly do something and why. You made it very easy to understand with your examples. I feel way more comfortable now trying to do my own nails at home. I'm saving this to watch again later. I think this time I can successfully apply a good set of nails that will last. Thank you! 💗💅☺️

Loved your video. Wish it was longer with more emphasis on what I need to buy for home use. I’m a retired master cosmetologist. Mostly did hair and ran my businesses. But now I’m interested in doing my nails at home. It you lived close by me I would love to let you do my nails because your a great nail tech and a great conversationalist. I hate going to nail salons where they don’t understand me and vice versa. I’m never satisfied because of lack of communication. Sanitation is also my pet peeve. I’m subscribing to your channel. Hope to learn more. Thank you for making videos. Keep it going.

Oh my gosh! I finally started using gel dip powder and making my nails pretty for the first time ever-my nails are super thin and always break so it’s been a lifelong “nope can’t have pretty nails” thing. So I’m excited!!! And have been having all these issues, ha…thanks so much for this FABULOUS video! Would you mind letting us know what’s in that bottle you used to clean the mail after you buff it up? So no acetone, no soap, no oil…is it just water??? Thank you SO MUCH!!! I go to salons to have gel manicures because I like the way it looks and I want to have a pretty and well done manicure. I don't want something that will sit on my nails for weeks and I certainly might not be back every two weeks to get a new one so I want my nails to look like they looked prior to putting the gel on them. I also have extremely sensitive nails and I hate the feeling of the file on them so I definitely will not let the nail technician do this. So in this respect I don't really see it as a mistake and I don't agree that gel is an enhancement. I see it as a more durable alternative to normal polish. Otherwise, lovely video! xxx

Super super helpful tips and tricks .. I never knew applying protein bond over the entire nail would make soaking off difficult... And I know from experience this is so true but I couldn't figure out why nor did I make the connection.. I just thought more protein bond the better 😆😆 I'll definitely try doing just the tip next time and see how the soak off goes. I absolutely love young nails and the education this little channel brings to the public. Thank you so much!!

Great video, I've been in the industry for 40+ yrs and its great to learn something new, and I did, so now I know why a few of my clients had some lifting, but will never again have lifting, as I said not many clients have but at least I now know why and I'm' delighted & excited that when I come out of lockdown I'll have happy clients with no lifting or problems - wont I look good Yeah!. I was an educator & distributor for Tammy Taylor nails for over 15yrs and only used her brand in my salon, however I stopped with Tammy at Christmas and I'm quite enjoying the freedom of looking for and trying new brands. You seem to have a number of great products, I'm so intrigued, I do have use your protein bond and even today I learnt something new, oh this is so fun. Love from across the pond. Xv

Thank you so much for the video. 🥰🥳😘I have worked at “natural nail salons” only we don’t use drills... a lot of my guest have had experiences with people that don’t know how to use drills properly and therefore messing up their natural nail to the point of trauma... there anyway you can do any videos with nail files on all 10 fingers and then follow thru with the full service? Do you cap the free edge of the nail with Gel ? I am having a problem with doing a gel Service within 50 minutes, and every guest will have their own nail story which can make or break this 50 minute time frame it’s something I am trying to master.

Speed comes with time, don't stress it. We don't stress the capping since we use protein bond, other than for the look. We have full service videos under the category of "Real time"

I also want to add a lot of new users flood the cuticle. Sometimes nothing happens, but over time it causes contact dermatitis. Which is an allergy that could be super itchy, sore, and painful. It kind of happen either from over exposure or just bad luck from the first try. And I think a lot of people don’t realise flooding the cuticle could have this kind of effect.
