Ok dude I got a story for you. My geography teacher gave us our project like last month(it wasn't an online class thank jesus) and it also turned out to be a group project(I'm 15 just so you know) The entire project was about creating your own, functioning country. So it had to have a name, a flag, national anthem and bird(our bird was the potoo, it's incredible). We also had to make an education system, health and welfare, economy, culture, trade, political system, and technology and industrialisation plan thing. We only had about a week to finish it(we had to make a poster, powerpoint and do a little presentation where I sang the anthem very akwardly) and my group... let's just say I did all the work. So ya maybe it wasn't that bad but like... it's stressful. (sorry this is so long)

Group projects are just bad in general. You get forced into a group with random people, and are expected to do good, or else you get publicly shamed by the teacher. It would be nice if you could be with your friends, because you already know you get along, and at least if you fail you fail together. But that never happens, because you’ll “distract” each other. It’s much better if you get to know random shit heads for no reason and fail, than have a good time with people you like and actually get a good grade. It’s stupid

As someone currently studying geography, that project definitely seems more at home in an upper level in-person course like Environmental Hazards / Resource Management. I can see how it highlights Geography as a discipline : interweaving natural events and human systems to tell an engaging spatial story, and impacting future planning strategies...but it’s difficult to make people appreciate and engage all of that, especially with a diverse group of faces/experience an online entry level class provide. You’re never short on stories in a geography class though like that. Thanks for sharing yours here, and congrats on graduating!

Agreed here. My literal junior year final project in GIS was on humanitarian assistance for potential flooding in Jakarta, Indonesia. I incorporated DEMs, household income, emergency shelter locations, drive times from shelters to grocery stores, etc for a comprehensive disaster scenario and what each person in each section of the city could do to save themselves and others. I was super proud of it. I got a B. So I definitely agree that this is a little outside the scope of an introductory general education geography class

I was in a sociology class at pierce some time ago. We had this huge group project and it was due at the end of the semester. My job was to create a survey, pass out the surveys to people outside of the class and make a chart on excel ( I just made my survey on google docs and it instantly makes a chart summery for you). I was the one member in the group who would communicate with my group members on a weekly basis. I would ask them what they thought about my questions and I would help/ suggest things out when they asked for my opinion. We got 50 respondents to fill out my survey and we only needed 40. I got my part of the project done. But during the last week of class, I got so sick that I couldnt get out of bed. I emailed my professor, explaining the situation to her and emailed my part of the project to her before the due date. Turned out that she wanted it turned in person. I ended up getting a zero on the project while my group members recieved 100% on the project and I received a D ( since I get As on all the exams) as my overall grade. Now, I'm not trying to make excuses. it was my fault for not turning it in person early on throughout the semester. Honestly, I shouldve just asked my group member to print it out and just turn in for me when they were turning their work to the professor (but I didnt really think about that option cause i was super sick). What I'm trying to say is that you should always have a backup plan or better yet, turn things in earlier than when they're due. What I got from this experience was that even though life happens, people dont want your excuses and want things done how they asked for them and when they asked for them. Btw, I retook the class again and got an A this time.

One of the classes I needed in order to graduate on time got cancelled for the semester; my advisor told me I could take another class (from a list of acceptable ones) as a substitute in order to still gradate on time. I passed all my classes, attended the graduation ceremony... and suddenly received an e-mail the next week saying "You didnt' actually graduate cuz you didn't take /this/ class"... I had to explain to them what my advisor had said, forwarding his e-mail (that was his last semester, so I was gone once graduation happened), and waiting /five months/ before i was approved and could finally pick up my diploma.

I am duel enrolled in a community college and high school. Almost every college class had a super ambiguous project like this. This video gave me flash backs. And for some projects I get to the ambiguity because when we graduate that's it- you're own your own to create what you can with what you learned and certain projects represent this. However, in my opinion, this should never be done for classes that have nothing to do with your major, like English for Engineering, or Calculus for English. If anything those project should be on something that relates that subject to your feild of study. Like writing a research paper (English stem). Anyway, at least your group did the work. Often our groups were assigned before the withdrawal date and I've had like half a group ditch. I learned- never to sit in the back or near the door because I was more likely to get better groups who would try harder if the teacher did the typical group by seatings method. What I don't think is fair is that we get graded for what our partners did to. And if you are in a class with minimal in class time, it can be chaos finding times that will work for all 3-6people. that's what happened to my group. Worst group: I had one girl dealing with her new born baby, another guy working 2 jobs, one with no transportation an hour away from any of us, and the last just didn't give a fuck (they ended up challenging all the plans in the beginning causing drama, saying they'd provide things- but then not literally the meeting they were supposed to bring them, until he didn't show up, and then threatened to report us to the teacher for "not doing enough/including him" if we didn't put his name on the project. Worse so the project required tools- something our class had no access to on campus so we had to do it in the guy's with 2 jobs's girlfriend's parents' shed and hour away from campus. With these circumstances our group ended up being disfunctional for the majority of the semester only getting 2 (3 on a good day) of 5 of us at a meeting. this was a hands on project so online wasn't an option. There wasn't always the same person from the last meeting to help update those in the next so a lot of double work and undoing of the last meeting was done. Finally week of, people realize they're about to fail, and start sacrifices. The guy took off of work. The girl hired a baby sitter and her husband picked up the guy without transportation. I put my other classes on hold has a high schooler, and we pulled two all-nighters that week to just barely get all the requirement for a low A. I could say it was our fault for procrastinating but tbh we never would have put off the time unless we were under that amount of pressure. At least, that project was somewhat fair. 10% of the grade was an average of how others in your group rated you on a team quiz so everyone tried doing something to not loose their 10 points. What was worse was my math project. It wasn't hands on so everything was done online. But unfortunately I was met.with actual procrastinators except one this time- and the job I volunteered for- couldn't be done until they finished their work. We were given 4 types of math problem we all had to relate to a story. Make a homework sheet of them , and a presentation. Each person got a problem and another task. My task was to put the problems into a creative powerpoint. One of us dropped last minute, so I ended up doing 2 problems and another guy took his extra job. I waited. And waited. 10pm- 2hours until the deadline. I haven't been able to do anything except my problems. The afternoon of the deadline I had asked my teacher "hey havent heard from the rest of my group getting kind of worried they won't do their part" "If they don't do it yourself and take their names off." This teacher. Expected me to do 3 other people's work, in an afternoon. And get exactly the same credit than the people who's group worked and only had to do 1/4 of the work I would have to do. How is that fair? Thankfully the deadline was midnight. 10:30pm I finally got the information and did the quickest PowerPoint ever. (Someone else was supposed to make a template to tie all the problems together- they claimed to do graphic design- so they were picked for that- but the only left me with a glitchy background- for the powerpoint- aka a edited picture over the actual PowerPoint background. So I had a lot to do in 1hour 30minutes.

This kind of reminds me of some projects in that I worked, in the real world you also have a teacher, this teacher is the owner of the company that you work for, and besides not knowing about your field of study, they normally are complete idiots, they forget about the dead lines, the lose the files, they lose the disks, then when you talk to their teachers they tell you that the maps were supposed to be different, so you have to modify the program, always carry your compilers and tools ready to be deploy on any machine, keep back ups of every file, always organized, etc etc.

I almost didn't graduate because I had to repeat a couple of classes that I failed miserably due to unfamiliarity. That and I had no knowledge that I have to submit a slip of paper for my new class grade to replace my C- and below classes. With the help of summer classes I managed to graduate, not in 2015 I was expecting but in 2016 instead. The classes I did bad in became easier after I took them the second time.

Group projects are COMPLETE BULL, unless they judge everyone’s contribution individually ( which in that case it may as well be an individual project in the first place ) then it’s not fair for other people’s laziness to have an impact on another persons FINAL GRADE!!!

Omg!! I went through something similar with my last term before I graduated! And stupid enough it was for Geography too 🤣 we had a final project and our teacher was super vague on instructions and I had to ask so many questions. I ended up passing by a few points but the majority of the class was in the same boat of being confused half the time.

I know how that feels, once I was in class doing a project and I was doing my part and finished it but my companions didn't and started doing it 30 minutes before it was turned in and they were lazy and sloppy, I got their info and did it all my self and we told everyone else that we had all done it

Lol, I almost didn’t graduate my senior year of high school. I had a 3.5 GPA but I needed to pass one more advanced math class. I ended up with a D- for my first semester but I failed 3rd quarter and I cut it super close 4th quarter. I can’t remember if I failed decried semester all I know is I passed for the YEAR. I was tenths of a grade away from not being eligible to graduate. My parents still don’t know. I’m not telling them either until I’ve graduated college and got a job

Once I wasn't done with a assignment so I e-mailed the teacher a ”Hi! Here is the assignment! Best regards!” and did not attach anything! The teacher thought something went wrong along the way and I got a few more days (until he hade checked the e-mail and responded to me) to finish it and submit it when he asked to ”resend” it. I passed! 🥳

quarter system? 4 or 2 day work week? rate my professor? sounds like scad! Same tho, i was held back 2 years graduating because 1 class wrecked my gpa the quarter before senior started. and my program required a 3.0 before starting senior year. There was only the midterm and final in that class for grades, i got a b on my midterm and my final's junk drive crashed. I lost everything.

I walked when the graduation ceremony went down. I was projected to graduate but grades did not post yet. I hugged one of my capstone professors during the ceremony. I looked into this woman's eyes and she had the nerve to hug me knowing full damn well she had failed me and walking during this ceremony was for NULL. My family was there, and to this day, they do not know I did not graduate that semester and had to take a whole other semester to pass my capstone.
