I've had numerous surgeries in my life, and during one of the first surgeries, I had a bad anesthesia experience. So I was petrified from then on. Until one anesthesiologist asked me to tell him the funniest thing that had ever happened to me. I did, and even though I knew he was working on putting me to sleep, I was trying to finish the story, and when I woke up, they told me, I was laughing. Now, Everytime I have to have surgery, I tell a funny story while they are putting me to sleep. It's a ritual that feels very calming. Thank you for such interesting videos!

Had a couple bad experiences myself, so scared, then a couple doctors who were fixin' to put my shattered leg back together, got me laughing, it made a huge difference, I started joking back, saying, by your last names, know your both Irish, no fighting in the operating room, made them laugh...a few years ago, had cancer, before surgery, I was asking the nurses, doctors, to tell me a joke, one said, she's still awake?! I have heard that a lot, like every time, then they started joking around, and out I went...it relaxed me...got birth defects, spine, chronic pain from nerve damage for about 30 years, and went through a horrific back surgery, terrible after care, literally screaming in pain, until a mistake in medication was corrected, they were giving me 7.5 hydrocodone, instead of two tylox every four hours/ or morphine shot, once they gave me right medication, was still in a lot of pain, but I could handle it, every doctor whose ever seen the scars on my back, first words, always the same, what did they do to you?! Yeah, tell me about it, cut bone from my hip and hammered it into my spine I reckon...ouch. But yeah, if you can make me laugh, and it's not hard to do so, I can relax...been laughing at the devil all my life, it helps. Glad your ok.

I LOVE the feeling of the anesthesia taking effect. It’s the only thing I ever “look forward to”, when having a procedure. I know it probably sounds weird, but I have a lot of sleep issues in my normal life, so it’s kind of neat to be able to have it all quickly fade and go under. I can see how Michael Jackson was addicted to it.

@@MedicalSecrets I had 3 ear surgeries for a Cholesteatoma and then rebuild my ear drum and hearing bones. 5 hours, 2 hours, 2 hours…all about a year apart. Each time I woke up with a fast heart rate of 120-140. Each time that lasted about 2-3 days after out patient surgery. I was on Atenolol 25 mg for years and had to double the dose to try to keep the heart rate down but never been told any reason that happened each time by the doctor or the anesthesiologist? You have any ideas or what I might do to keep that from happing again IF I ever went through that again. It made my anxiety about anesthesia even worse. The surgery itself didn’t actually cause me anxiety. The last surgery I had was cataract surgery and I did it with zero anesthesia or sedation and that was with 2 needles injected behind my eyeball wide awake. ( doctor didn’t think I could do it a anesthesiologist was on hand) The only anxiety I had during that was hearing the heart monitor beeping when my heart skipped a beat. The rock music in the operating room and the nurses about to faint from the needles in my eyeball while awake didn’t help but walked out with zero recovery and my normal heart rate.

I've had three shoulder surgeries, most recent one was an open shoulder latarjet procedure with coracoid transfer. My first surgery at age 17 I had no anxiety whatsoever cause I didn't know what to expect, but the anesthesiologist I had was really mean and when I experienced the nerve block and started screaming and crying he told me to shut up. 10 years later I had a second shoulder surgery to fix more damage (and I was diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder a year prior to that) and the nerve block was again traumatic. It was so bad that going into this major surgery... I was worried about the nerve block the most to the point where I was having panic and crying attacks days before surgery and even on the day of surgery, the second I got into the bed I started sobbing. But I think this time after telling all this to the anesthesiologist, he made a really conscious effort to make it so it wasn't so bad. And I remember the experience was painful but not as bad as I expected... the point where once I realized it was done, I started crying and profusely thanking the nurses and anesthesiologist for making it so easy on me... and my anxiety melted and I even got excited to get on with it and finish the surgery and I was blabbing away about my favorite topics right up until the mask was put on me. Even though the surgery was very traumatic for my body and so was the recovery (most painful surgery I've ever had since it was a bone graft), it was amazing what small things were able to help my anxiety both before, during, and after all this. I'm in 3 weeks post op right now from shoulder surgery and doing pretty well. Still in significant pain but anxiety is slowly going away. This video is fantastic and validating because I always have to remind myself that my body keeps score and decides what trauma is and that anxiety isn't my fault

I hope I never cross her path again but if I do, can I request a different anesthesiologist? I still have 2 surgeries to go. I have an appreciation for anesthesiologist. I think it’s because my 1st experience with any anesthesiologist was my 1st born , I had a C-section and he was just so sweet and absolutely hilarious. He made me feel so comfortable even though I was only 19 and in a scary situation. I didn’t meet my husband of now 24 yrs until 2 months after having my 1st born so I think being “alone” was scary as well. My mom was with me ofc but I think having a great anesthesiologist was key to how my experience went. He itched my nose for me when I was getting the c-section and he was by my side the entire time. I’ll never forget that experience bc I was awake and it was a good one. I was living with my grandmother and though I had pain medication in the hospital after the surgery, I didn’t take one pill they sent home even though I was in pain. I was scared I’d fall asleep or something would happen because I was again alone and a single mom att. Now for my 2nd and 3rd born I actually didn’t have the c-section and I remember even though I had my husband by my side I was more freaked out and I did have to take meds when I got home just for a little bit. They had to cut me and idk I was just in more pain. My husband was amazing through it all I just had a different experience than I did with my 1st born. Anesthesiologists are underrated because I never met one who wasn’t just so kind and made you feel like everything was going to be okay. My cervical spinal fusion was my worst experience , but it wasn’t my anesthesiologist it was the surgeon I was uncomfortable with and I woke up in so much pain I thought they didn’t give me pain medication, but they had. I guess my anxiety and overall the treatment from the hospital itself, my surgeon and the surgery I was getting played a huge role of how I felt before and after that surgery. I was in a city and hospital I never been and my surgeon didn’t have great bedside manners. I was only 28 and that experience was so scary and I still have pain to this day from that cervical spinal fusion I had back in 2007. You seem like a great anesthesiologist and thanks for these informative videos. I’m premenopausal and may have to get a hysterectomy. So I’m subscribing to learn what I can do to have the best outcome. Thanks 😊

My BFF suffered an awful fall down an embankment resulting in multiple fractures and abrasions/avulsions requiring skin grafting. I assumed responsibility for her 12 yr. I had never been around a German Shepherd this much, and I’m so enamored - also taken aback by her intelligence, sensitivity, perception, capacity to give and receive love. Your videos helped me before my first surgery. I watched every minute of it soaking up the info. What scared me though was some people sharing that they woke up mid surgery and such. Since I have generalized anxiety, I need to have control which means I need to know everything’s that is happening or could happen. Would you mind making a video and give us examples (maybe even numbers) on patients waking up, or patients being aware during surgery. Although rare some stay awake and feel every bit of cut. With that said, my surgery went well. At first I was dissapointed in the anesthesiologist because I soon as I got in to the room I told her I was really scared and she hurried up and put me to sleep which I didn’t appreciate because I wanted some kind words and a hand to hold. Now I’m thinking they just wanted to put me asleep before I was having a full blown panic attack.

Of course you want details! To be informed! I want to know everything, knowledge is power, empowers you to make decisions, your not being a control freak darling, so sorry you were treated without compassion, that's messed up..I never woke up during surgery, but did under sedation, they were shooting cortisone into my nerve roots, spine, heard someone say, give her more Versed, Doc later apologized, didn't realize my stenosis was so bad, medicine didn't want to go through thing..I woke up, was trying to get up, some sharp, brief pain, then I was out again, it didn't emotionally bother me afterwards, appreciated the apology, and pain, bad, pain, we don't remember, we remember it was bad, but I think our brain protects us? I think it's unusual for a person to wake up during surgery? I think it's good that you are informed, and I hope all things go well for you, have trauma issues myself, have much empathy for you, keep asking, get totally informed, it will make you feel better, it's ok to control what you can, I think so,anyway, sending you a virtual hug, so sorry you were treated badly, I have been too, no call for that crap, when it's easy to be kind.

I just found your videos and gave to say how much I appreciate the information. I’ve had several surgeries(Caesarian sections, oophorectomy, and VSG). I was anxious prior to all of them, but as a therapist I used cognitive techniques to manage the anxiety and can vouch for the effectiveness. I’m shocked to learn how that can impact healing. Yet it makes do much sense. I was 7 months pregnant with the oophorectomy and was incredibly anxious prior to that procedure. I was anxious I would lose the baby. I was not calm as they put me under anesthesia. I woke up extremely agitated and demanded that they bring my husband to the recovery room. I was nearly inconsolable despite them telling me the baby’s heartbeat was good. Ultimately I went home in a lot of discomfort and anxiety over my recovery and pending delivery. Anticipating a third caesarean section. Ultimately I was on bed rest for two weeks and delivered at 33 weeks, just several weeks after the surgery. I’m guessing my anxiety levels inhibited my healing. Maybe leading to the pre eclampsia that required delivery. In any case that baby is now 24 and neither of us had complications post delivery. Keep educating us. It is very helpful.

Finally, on the third day, I pulled a regular nurse aside and asked why all those people had come to see me. She said that after I was sedated, I was talking to my doctor. I told him that my mother hadn’t been sleeping because she was so worried about the surgery. I said, “if I don’t make it through the surgery, please wait until tomorrow to tell my mom, so she can get a good night’s sleep beforehand.” They all that was so sweet, they wanted to see what I was like out from under the influence. 🥰 After my surgery, I asked my mom why she was so scared before. Even though the first was an emergency because my son was stuck, it was fairly easy for me to switch gears since I'd been trying to plan for several different possibilities. I’d always been denied any elective procedures so when it came to these two emergent surgeries I was afraid I was going to die. Well my anesthesiologist sensed my anxiety and dread and helped me work through it and the next thing I know I was back in my room. I’ve had many surgeries, and surgical procedures, that involve some form of sedation. I’ve also had many simple procedures need to be done with additional sedation - like, in IR, you don’t generally need sedation, especially to put in an NJ tube, or replace a GJ tube, but it’s now noted in my chart with the TPN/EN team, that you’re not going to get a tube into me, if I’m sobbing and hyperventilating, and generally not okay (one of the main docs had to do an endoscopy and insert an NJ tube early on, and experienced this firsthand - and he reassured me that sometimes, that’s just how a person is built, and that if we need an anesthesiologist, then we get one). And you know what? The anesthesiologist is always understanding and reassuring, and that helps too. I guess I used to feel like my extra needs were an inconvenience to others, and most everyone else is like, no, we’d rather have those extra resources ready and on hand, in case you do need them, than know we probably do need them, but don’t have them. Why I was actually commenting, though, is, yeah, I’ve been around the anesthesia block (terrible pun, I’m sorry), and not once in these 38 years have I tried to premedicate myself before surgery, regardless of anxiety. I just inform anyone who says, “how are you right now,” with whatever my level of anxiety sits at. It just seems really dangerous, especially if your anesthesiologist doesn’t know what you’ve taken, and…they don’t hand out those preop booklets with preop instructions for you *not* to follow them!

There’s nothing that you can tell me that will make having surgery not traumatic. I was molested by my pediatrician when I was a very young girl. As a result of that I have PTSD, I am stubborn, I won’t remove all my clothes for doctors, and the idea of going under anastesia makes me feel like I have no power and makes me very angry.

I've had 7 surgeries. 2 were c-sections. Those are the worst because they make you numb, you can't walk, then they cut you open and you can't run... that's when I looked to my left at my anesthesiologist and said "I'm having a panic attack" you get a shot and suddenly you don't care anymore. Happens again? No problem, ya get another shot because sometimes one isn't enough. I'd rather be knocked out because surgery is boring when you are just laying there thinking, which causes anxiety. I've never done drugs, I don't drink so I've never had those issues but I did run in to too much of something after my second c-section because I remember a team trying to do something in my room after the surgery, then the third time someone leans in and says "don't close your eyes, I don't know if we can bring you back again". I fought to keep my eyes open but to this day I don't fully understand what took place. That was in 2010. Other than that I never had issues. A toothache is far worse than any surgery I had.

This is interesting, so I have had at least 16 surgeries in my life so far with more to go and I'm only 26. After my last one I got diagnosed with FND and had to be put under even for an MRI every year because anxiety gets so bad. The thing is, I'm so used to surgery and MRIs I couldn't understand non-epileptic seizures I was having from being so traumatized from hospitalization stuff such as surgery. My family thinks it comes from having a stroke in a brain surgery when I was 15 so I am much more anxious and protective of myself against doctors and nurses uncontrollably during procedures

From someone who hasn't been to a dentist in more years than finger's I'd definitely encourage anyone avoiding the dentist like the plague, get sedation it's nectar of the gods

I had surgery in March 2022. Was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Tumour was 30cm/10lbs. I was quite anxious before but my surgical team was amazing. Had tumour removed as well as a full hysterectomy. Surgery was more complicated then planned, and started bleeding out and needed 5 units blood in OR, and then 4 more in ICU. Currently one year cancer free.

After I woke from my tonsillectomy (age 30) and after I woke from my emergency c-section (complications during c section so they had to put me under) I was very relaxed and in a pleasant mood. I did however develop postpartum at 6-8 weeks after having the c-section- more anxiety than depression but I definitely had both. But when I woke from hysterectomy (age 48) I was a hot -hot mess! But it was during COVID, June 2020. I was so scared of so many different things going into that surgery. So now I’m thinking maybe that’s why I woke with such pain and hostility. Very interesting information doc. It is fantastic that you share your knowledge with us. Thank you. ❤

I hear ya. I've had man orthopedic surguries over the years and am getting ready for a second hand surg soon. Make sure your Dr. will provide as much pain meds as needed to be comfortable. Most hospitals have a 'pain management' office you can get a referral from your surgeon before surgery and you'll be able to work with them pre and post-op. Here in IL, they have different licensing than most surgeons that give them more leeway in what they can prescribe and for longer periods if needed. Also, alcohol is very bad for anxiety. Very common for anxiety to go up the day after drinking. Sugar is another toxin to cut out.

A great pleasure and so informative to watch your videos. I think this is the best place to ask about anxiety for anesthesia side effects. I have had several procedures involving anesthesia and each one has resulted in nausea for 4 to 6 weeks and weight loss of up to 15lbs. Each time I mentioned this before the next procedure/surgery to my anesthesiologist (even gave them records of past inductions) they assured me it would be better, not so (the 4 week bout was with post surgical hyperbaric treatment, very pricey) I didn't feel mentally (ability to multi-task, deal with new situations, etc) normal for many months after each induction. My body just seems to grab anesthesia and not let go. No one I have talked with can guide me in how to speed up the process. At this point I am pretty much against any procedure no matter how critical, if anesthesia is involved. Is this something you have addressed in another video or could in the future?

If I'm going in for surgery under general, I ALWAYS ask my anesthesiologist for a pre-op sedative. For someone with a history of anxiety, it makes a big difference just knowing it is WAITING for me. It makes a huge difference once it has taken effect. CanNOT imagine taking/using/ingesting anything pre-op that's not approved by my physician(s).

So I have to embrace my anxiety on my own, even to always being given a sedative prior surgery, I had RNY and I am scheduled this coming Fri, it seems last time they had issues because of intubation, apparently now I need to be on liquid diet for 24 hrs prior bunionectomy, always notice when I get nerve blocks or local anesthetic wear off really quick. About 15 years ago I had my gallbladder out. They came to take me to surgery and I said hang on I've not had a pre-med yet and they I said oh we don't do that anymore. They wheeled me across the corridor to the operating theatre and although I'm not an anxious person and wasn't worried about the surgery I must admit it as they were wheeling me across on that trolley I did feel a little bit panicky inside but tried not to show it lol Anyway we got to Theatre and we were in the room before you go in and the anaesthetist was talking to me and we were laughing about putting a funny hat on for surgery. Next thing I know I'm being woken up and it was all over and done with. There was no counting backwards from 10 or anything which is what I expected and it was all completely painless and a very pleasant experience thanks to the anaesthetist! I haven't been in hospital since but I'm going in in 3 weeks to have a knee replacement. They are going to give me an injection and keep me awake so that will be an experience! 😮

Not so weird: there is NOTHING worse than a bad anesthesiologist! I have had a couple. Last one didn't want to tell me his name, show me his name tag, and he was to get me ready for a total reverse shoulder replacement. AND he didn't prepare me for the block he wanted to give me. He hurt me soooo bad, would not interact with me. IF he'd given me his name, this is a Dr. that needed to be reported to the Board .

Hello Doc, I might be nitpicking here, but my anxiety is related to the immediate postop pain ( searing agonal pain) but it is the treatment of the pain that causes my anxiety, especially in this era of the so-called opioid opiate crisis. Anyone doctor or patient has known for quite some time that all oral opiates are only effective for approximately three hours they are continually prescribed for every four hours. I personally have miss for over 50 years. I assume this discrepancy is based on an overabundance of caution, violent prescriber, but the patient suffers for needlessly. Stay well. Cheers.

I've used magic mushrooms a few times, and once was a little over a month before surgery. I had no anxiety whatsoever, and I suspect this may be why my scalp didn't regain full sensation. I did feel the nerves trying to "explore" and find connections again, but then it seemed like they were just too content with the results. Occasionally when I'm distressed about it, I get a quick flicker of sensation there again, which is quickly quieted down. It could be some kind of psychosomatic thing. I'll see how my next trip goes.
