We don't have this beautiful idiom 'once in a blue moon' in French, Katherine. But we have many others humorous, colorful and popular ones to mean in fact 'almost never' or downright 'never'. You may know some of them such as for example: 'Tous les 36 du mois' (All the 36ths of the month ;-) 'La semaine des quatre jeudis' (The week of the four thursdays ;-) 'à la Saint Glinglin !' (At/On the Saint GlinGlin! ;-) 'Quand les poules auront des dents' (when hens have/grow teeth = when pigs fly/when hell freezes over/when (until the) cows come home) 'Aux calendes grecques' ( At/to/on the Greek calends ;-) Bisous 🌹🙏

Studying from dawn to dusk today , I m reading a British Christmas Edition 2023 copy of CountryLiving magazine at the moment , printed in the UK , and I quote " Transformed by a mantle of midwinter snow , the crenellated house becomes an enchanted castle . " Could you possibly explain in a video what a crenellated house is , please ?
@fabrice9252 Жыл бұрын
You probably got it already but in case, this is basically an image (quite beautiful by the way) that compares these toothed, jagged, irregular shapes of the snow, or the stalactites perhaps on this house that evoke the crenellations/battlements/slots of a fairytale medieval castle. ;-)

@fabrice9252 Жыл бұрын
This is indeed a great point you raise. You may have quite a good level in English and have no particular problem to get educated people speaking a clear and formal English, the one learnt at school and even at university.This sometimes can become a whole different story and a challenge when you listen to people speaking the everyday language in the street, cafés, films or series ... For several reasons: because natives, like with people in every other country (think of your own one...) will naturally tend to speak fast, with connected speech, 'eating words', making contractions and elisions, using slang, committing grammar mistakes, not pronouncing, articulating well etc. etc. And then you have the different accents (In England, it changes from an area to the other and even, you simply move hardly 20 kms and the accent is different!). Of course,you also have the cases and the many situations where people allude and refer to some particular things belonging to their own and sometimes special culture and that you may not be aware of... And you're 'lost' ... All this makes it tricky to understand them. This is normal. How to remedy to this? ... Well, there is no witchcraft or sorcery, you have to get your ears used to it the most possible by listening to as much media sources as possible, listening, listening again and practising even slowing the speed of the speech in the settings and then listening again at normal speed ...and yet, you will still find it sometimes difficult. The graal, obviously, would be a total immersion in the foreign language you learn, meaning listening to it and practising it each passing day. Now, the real ideal would even be to move to that country and speak the targeted language on a daily basis with the natives themselves and for months and years in the hope of becoming... totally fluent one day.

In the medical tech field we use the word " overkill " a lot in the Netherlands , and even adopted it to Dutch in that field and context.. To sprinkle this comment with examples .. 1. An overkill of Chlorhexidine to kill all bacteria in a wound . = use an irrational (and sometimes risky) amount (an overdose) of disinfectant, , but nevertheless certain that you killed all bacteria (In Dutch ; Een overkill aan Chloorhexidine) 2. There is an overkill of information in this thick manual . = an overwhelming amount , and not essential information
