I’ve been looking at something like this, and this seems far more appealing than the boum or analog heat as an end of chain for hardware before recording into a daw.

not sure, analog heat still has the analog saturation routing for it, and boum the great filter and analog compression.....and if you go into a daw anyway, why not master with a plugin chain? i'd say then the use of such a pedal is colouring, and argue that boum and heat are better/warmer at this

That video was published in the middle of me solving exactly the problem this box solves! Like: I actually am looking at mid/side and multiband compression. I have BiG SiX that has this master insert chain: Send -> Octatrack -> Compressor -> Return. I planned to try this setups, from the existing blocks: 1) Octatrack with three tracks that have DJ Kill Eq as FX1, then Compressor as FX2. It would be the safest bet, because I want to use OT either way for sound mangling, mainly cutting recorded track on the go with random trigs. 2) Octatrack this time only for my mangling, then into Eurorack for my stereo Waldorf CMP1 compressor. 3) Like above, but this time I was contemplating doing compressor on my own from owned blocks. I have like 500HP of unused modules that I should either sell or find use for them. This would solve one problem that bothers me with most compressors. I think that for stereo compression it could be better to sum control signal than to sum audio. This is especially true, when there is phase shifted stereo signal (i.e. my Modal 008 is often used in stacked mode for extra stereo feel, but it means that oscillators are beating from different channels - it's specific for Modals 001, 002 and 008 that I like and utilise a lot). 4) Like point 2, but this time using Noise Engineering's take on multiband compression. And while I was thinking about it for few weeks already, here comes solution for me - cheap, compact, with few extras. Probably will order it in the morning, after sleeping with that thought. Thank you for introducing me to this design. Cheers! P.S. I never commented on that, but you inspired me with how you use send for delay (as feedback) and this is how I also will use it, when I finish my setup around BiG SiX.

Oh! I forgot to add. In every scenario mentioned there is not a word about mid/side. Well, for this I was contemplating buying special blocks. From - paradoxically cheapest options - eurorack, to Wes block, costing big money and definitely not portable in size nor weight. This is where big price advantage from this effect come very handy. I contemplated Heat + FX for that "monofying" of bass block and this does it also, costing less as a package.

This looks awesome! After some KZbin rabbitholing I've been thinking that I sooner or later want the Analog Heat for my music production, but since it does not have a real compressor so I wonder if I could complement it with for example this, or what do you think? I still love what I'm hearing from the Analog Heat. If one would do both, would you have the Analog Heat before or after this in the chain? I'm still in the brainstorming stage, want to plan my purchases in advance 😊

Pretty neat. I disagree that it only does a little: eq, multiband mid/side, and multiband compression is a lot. Complex enough that I would actually be concerned about managing it live - if different tracks sound different they need different mastering. Hard to find the right balance of features versus ease of live use. I suspect I might find myself using only the compression. And that is still a reasonable value proposition, have not been looking but multiband comp like that is unusual in a pedal.

You say this is aimed at performance, but it seems to me it would easily be applicable if you enjoy being "DAWless", to the extend you record and master with hardware devices. Would this be a compelling pedal to stick on your hardware if you already have devices like the Bluebox or the new Allen and Heath digital mixer/recorder?

I've been looking for a compressor/end of chain device and was considering either the OTO Boum or FMR RNLA. This pedal actually looks better than either since you can adjust compression per band. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it and how you think it compares to the OTO Boum.

Boum has a pretty grabby & aggressive compressor (as well as nice warming through thermonuclear distortion), so it's a very different box. This pedal looks to be a much gentler box all around.

I used oto boum and fmr rnla for techno, but for finer minimal house nothing performed as good as the xpressor. It is a compressor that beats most of the plugins as well. I have drawmer, rnla, boum, platform, but nothing more effective while keeping the sound clean like the xpressor. It is mindblowing, that would be The Compressor if I had to pick a single one. Yet to try this golden master.

Hello everyone, first of all, thanks for the great video! I also have the Golden master pedal. But unfortunately I'm not so happy with it. When I increase the compressor or extend the mid/side, there is a noticeable noise and sometimes even tones. This is not due to the other equipment. The only other thing I suspect is that it could be the power adapter, but it's a expensive Boss one. Do any of you have any idea or can you give me a hint?

Short version: What a great concept to discuss Oora. Do you have other gear that can act as 'end of chain' which you can further continue this important topic? TL:DR Version: These videos came at the perfect time. I've been trying to work out a end of chain 'analog sound' for my VSTs. I'm hoping I can place an analog sound on top of them... where they can then sound more like my hardware. A few of my VSTs sound great right out of the box. Those that use samples are pretty great sounding, such as granular and sample vsts, as i'm sure most people have had success with. I've also found that physical modeling VSTs sound great too (Modus for example). However, my other favorite plug-ins have a certain sound, when playing them along with some hardware simultaneously, that I can easily hear. Thus, my reasons for trying to work out an end of chain idea. Something that can 'glue' all of my instruments together. That VST sound, which I hear in many plug-ins, is almost the same sound that I hear with Strymon pedals (which is why i've never purchased any). It's probably just me, but I hear something like a sheen in the higher frequencies. Unfortunately, we can't obliterate or remove that VST sheen type of sound itself, but perhaps I could try to cover it up (i've been hoping anyway). I've been thinking of getting something like a used Moogerfooger filter pedal -or something similar. Anyway Oora, just an idea to further discuss this important topic which you addressed today via these two new pedals. Thanks again for another great couple of videos for us.

thanks for sharing your experience. So far I used the too Boum , mostly for the compression and almost no distortion. The other tool I tied was the Martin stimming one, which was great but definitely tricky to use and really expensive. This one seems a great one , I will use it for the next gigs and report back!

I ve been also considering getting something to give a more 'analog' or 'natural' caracter, if you prefer, to my VSTs and after considering all the options that won't cost a fortune, I kind of concluded that the Deco plugin is the most suitable one (I'd love to get the pedal for physical control but the plugin has a studio version and you can throw it on every track without the need for reamping). Out of curiosity, have you tested any Strymon pedal yourself or you have noticed this ''sheen' on youtube videos? This Golden Master seems to offer a lot for the price and to have a very nice subtle gluing effect but I am wondering if it is worth getting for studio use.. I can see all the benefits for having it on a gig but not sure if it's the right tool for dirtying up our VSTs..
@vvcv__00
@vvcv__00 10 ай бұрын
@@happyjessus Hey, I should clarify my 'analog' sound idea. When I refer to 'analog sound' I specifically refer to it with 'clean sounds'. When using a clean sounding pad, drone, felt piano VST, for example, is when I need that sound. I don't release material to the public, so I don't need to re-amp. For the most part, I need a fat analog sound from my VSTs to fit well with my analog gear, and especially for a thicker/analog sound that mixes well with my cello. Currently, my electro-acoustic work sounds bad because there is a lot of that digital sound. My guess is that if you really want convincing analog sounds, the kind of analog sound you get from 100% analog synth circuits, or to make acoustic instrument plugins sound convincing, I don't think you will get that from adding even more digital signals with a plugin. However, a VST may work if you just need a small hit of analog. You may also want to look into MoogerFooger plugins -especially the lowpass filter VST... it may help butter up the high/harsh digital frequencies while making some fat sounding lower ends. But yes, I've used Nightsky and El Capistan. I can hear why people like their sound, it does sound highly professional. I do have, and very much enjoy, their Sunset OD pedal, however, I just can't get past their delay, reverb, or modulation technology. Anyway, the other day I remembered a pedal from JHS called "Color Box", which many use for that warm/analog 'direct mixer' sound. I read it's based off the circuit from a popular Neve studio mixer. I feel somewhat relived that I remembered the pedal, because the Kingsley pedal can use it as an amp. Guitar players, many love the Kingsley sound (they sound unbelievable), us a Kingsley plugged directly into a solid state power amp, or an 'amp pedal' --because you can't go direct from Kingsley to mixer. I've wanted the Kingsley sound, but I don't need any kind of amp. Looking at the Color Box specs again, I realized I could use it as an 'amp' for a Kingsley pedal. The Color Box/Kingsley combo may offer enough analog sound. If not, I can go directly into a Model 1.4 mixer. I'll be getting a mixer either way for effect pedal channels. I'll go one step at a time, starting with a Color Box/Kingsley combo, then a digital mixer for a lot of pedal channels. If i need more 'Analog Sound', I'll plug the digital mixer into a Model 1.4 mixer. I'm thinking this will make even the cleanest sounding timbres, pads, and instruments sound very warm with great analog body... and should fit well with my cello's sound. Hehe, I'm so happy I will be able to use a Kingsley pedal!! Good Luck my friend! ....to us both. :Dver, if you only need a small touch, enough to trick ears during busy music, a VST may work.

I just got the JHS Colorbox 2 pedal for end-of-chain sound (an analog sound). This pedal's circuit was modeled from Neve mixing boards and has a preamp as those boards did. It would be a great comparison, i think, between Golden Master and the Colorbox. To me, the GM gives almost too much low end punch, but i'm not sure if that's the compressor side of it. Part of the reason why it might be a good comparison. Anyway, i've been all smiles since getting the JHS...finally got great unprocessed sound on my VST instruments.
