I think there was more to this Centurion in how he refused Jesus' offer to come to his house, because he was aware of the Jewish customs about entering the houses of Gentiles and how taboo it was for them. By politely asking Jesus not to come to his house, he was attempting to prevent any embarrassment or allow Jesus' reputation to be criticized further. Granted, Jesus would've felt no embarrassment, but the Centurion didn't know that. He was simply trying to present a very humble and respectful attitude, and that in itself is a marvelous display, to say nothing of his great faith that if Jesus simply said that his servant was cured, he would believe it was done.

True, but the main thing is that it's an examplary testament of faith, because everyone wants to see and demand proof of him, yet the centurion, a man that understands authority, doesn't need to see, because when you have that mentality, you know what is said is done. He didn't need to test the lord, for he knew in his heart already. This is why Jesus says that he doesn't see that much faith with the people around. I really like this scene simply because not only how well acted it was, but how meaninful it was.

Little did the centurion know his leading statement would be part of the high church liturgy before receiving the sacrament of Holy Communion at the alter. Lord I am not worthy thou should come under my roof while the celebrant speaks holding chalice and proper response by the laity but speak the word only and my soul shall be healed.

The centurion basically asked Jesus to do something that had never been done before. The lesson is, whatever you need, don't think that it's impossible or that you don't deserve it, because Jesus can do anything and He wants to do anything to help us.

Yeah me too. The humility and faith of the Centurian and the rebuking that Jesus gave to his disciples that everyone is welcome at his father's table. If that isn't selfless love and redemption for all of humanity, past, present, and future, then i don't know what is. It's hard to be in the world and not of it when it is all we know from experience and partially open hearts. It's hard to sometimes to see just how profound, glorifying, and encompassing God's love really is that his plan from the beginning was to sacrifice his only son for the atonement for our sins and as much as the world draws me in sometimes and hardens me a little, this is what draws me back in and puts me back on his ways and his path. People just don't get just how loving our God is. It's not that he doesn't care. It's that we keep trying to do it against his ways and in our own carnality the further we get from him.

no. i also tought maybe the centurion was testing the lord or maybe even trying to protect himself, to not lose his position, but no the lord can see the heart and through bad intentions. The centurion was truly faithful . if anything it teaches us about ourselves how we always think badly of someone , and judge to quickly, how we doubt other people and strangers with our ever giving them a chance. We don't really know what happened to him after that moment. I am not sure what he believed about Jesus or if he worshipped him. We don't know that much. He may have died or was killed in battle. If he did then it is a reflection of how we treat jesus one day we are faithful like this the next we are rebellious we had to be saved by grace.

This story deserves the blackest of marks for the gospels. The centurion is fictitious but he is deemed to have more faith than anyone in Israel. And it is prophesied that all Jews- apart from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob will go to hell! This is a Centurion who would have gladly been part of the Jerusalem genocide, or thrust his sword into a crucified man. All he has to offer is that his underlings obey him whatever he commands. Perhaps that ability to reduce people to be like sheep attracted the gospel writers! How any Christian can admire this story is beyond belief.

His faith was not that Jesus would heal him. His faith was he knew Jesus Christ was God. And had the Authority too heal his servant. If Jesus just spoke the words..As the Jews had told Jesus Christ of his deeds that he had done for them. As the city was a poor city. Most likely the Centurion used his own money to build their church or taken up a collection from his men. Might be why the city avoided all the troubles the others had..
