I like to call it the “prince effect”. Artists saw the way he was revered for writing his own songs and wanted to emulate that. For example, Lauryn Hill’s record label asking her to write and produce her album like Prince, so she stole credits from the actual songwriters and producers to make it look as if she did it all herself. There was lawsuits over this and it’s speculated that is the reason why she remixes all of her songs on tour.
@hansmemling2311 Жыл бұрын
I think it might also be insecurity. It can also impact their credibility. A lot of pop stars want to be taken as seriously as artists who do write their own songs. It’s a bit like cosplaying being a serious artist. Can also be ego, I can imagine some artists don’t like the idea of some nobody that works behind the scenes to get the bulk of the income. Some of those artists will want their finger in the pie also.
@realer2748 Жыл бұрын
@@hansmemling2311 100%, it’s pretty much just optics and/or money. It’s kind of strange because producers and writers used to get famous off of simply being that because their names would be on the CD and artists would openly talk about working with them (i.e. Max Martin, Jam&Lewis, Etc.). Maybe since credits are more hidden on streaming it’s easier to get away with claiming you wrote a song when you’re really one of 6-7. Music in general has just also been less profitable in the streaming era so maybe artists are just trying to capitalize on anything they possibly can.

One has to keep in mind that there are always exceptions. Taylor Swift has written every single song she has sung in her discography, and a lot of it is self-written too. Songwriting is her greatest asset in fact, and that is what has led to her vast critical acclaim and commercial success. Her confessional songwriting is relatable to a multitude of people, and she is a musical chameleon due to her changing genres every few albums. It's evident that she contributes the most to her songwriting, even when she writes with other people (3-4 people max) because her songs are always about things deeply personal to her life and career. She has also written songs for Rihanna, Calvin Harris, Sugarland and more! Another great example is Lana Del Rey, who is an extremely talented songwriter and all of her songs have a special flair of 'lana' on them, you can easily distinguish a lana song from the others because of her metaphorical songwriting and things deeply personal to her. Just like Taylor, Lana is a songwriter first, and a singler second. This analogy also applies to Lorde, who has also written every single song she has sung, and all those have lyrics relating to suburbia, teenage heartbreak and nature and peacefulness- something deeply 'Lorde'. You can easily distinguish a lorde song from the other because of her songwriting.

Aldean doesn’t even know what he’s singing about. Have you ever heard an interview with him? There’s a video with him being asked questions about whether he still rides his tractor, or has the same trick, and other questions about things that are statements he makes on the lyrics. His answer to nearly everything is “I’ve never even seen a tractor in person,” or “I’ve never owned a truck…” “I’ve never shot a gun, I don’t own them,” “Never done anything like that, I’m just a singer…” Yet, he’s being used as propaganda by right wingers everywhere. There are thousands of guys like him, who use the fake accent singing, or are told to, and they sing about small town life, having never lived in one. Not to mention that they all sound alike, and sing about the same things. Not like people all sing about love. It’s love in a truck, drinking shit beer, while telling an immigrant, or lefty, or progressive person they’ll see their guns if they pull into their hometown. It’s like the WWE between them and rappers, with these characters they play. Yes, this has been done for decades at some level or another, but not like what has happened in the past 15 years or so.

They're a brand. People with a 'look' chosen by companies because they can also sing (a lot of people can sing, but not everyone has the 'look' that stands out and makes the industry heads see dollar signs). Dua Lipa posted a video singing some covers on KZbin when she was 15, as did many many others of the same age, some with better voices. A scout saw her videos, and recognised from her attractive look that she could be big. They hired her, got her vocal coaching, dance coaching, created songs for her and created a massively successful musical brand around her persona. That is how the pop industry has always worked to an extent (without the youtube ofc), from the TinPan Alley songwriting days to the big starts of the nineties and noughties like Britney Spears. Some performers figure that having people think of them as songwriters helps their image, so they 'help' write their songs. In the future the songwriters will probably be nameless in the background so that the star can take all the cred. In Harry Styles' case, I wouldn't be surprised if it was his advisors who wanted him to be seen to have writing credit, since the whole image they were trying to create for him from Sign of the Times onwards was that of a kind of modern day David Bowie. Bowie 100% had the 'look' that would have gotten him signed even just as a performer, but in his case he also happened to write all of his own work and even later produce the work of others, he was a true creative as well as a great performer. Harry should embrace being a performer, and stop trying to play the part of a Bowie-esque creative genius because that's just not who he is.

And how singers could at least sometimes aknoledge people behind them and maybe make a fair share of money with them, I don't think they would become less richer after that. But also I think songwriters should accept the reality and try to perform their own songs if it nearly possible for them. I personally lose interest for artists when I learn that they are not self made and just perform. I remember robbie williams calling bruno mars and max martin, asking them to write him a song and he got crickets (nothing, they didn’t answer the call🤣). And then he saw harry at the airport and harry said he spent a week with bruno and he’s been working with max martin. Harry styles doesn’t write his songs at all, wasted bruno’s time.

honestly a little nervous for future song writers with the dark cloud of ai looming
@hansmemling2311 Жыл бұрын
Imo Ai is going to take over the stock music. The elevator, generic background type music. As much as you can turn music into a formula mathematically speaking the actual hit is still a bit of luck and human experience. An Ai can’t really do that. There will be outliers here and there but overall the expertise of the hit writers won’t be in danger. It’s the low level people that make stock music that’s not worth much that are in trouble. but they make music in high volumes to make a living because they don’t get so much per track. Those are the ones in trouble.

i knew this when i used to write raps in school for fun. my teacher said i should sell. them i never did. later in band class as a drummer i found out some band don't even use the same people to do songs on albums. because the way people want notes to sound. and some cant do that all the time. but they need a star for the show this is why singer lip sing at concerts or band members act like there playing but really not

This is why I don't listen to Pop Music. I don't feel a connection to the same Soulless Corporate Shell. The Rock and Metal Industry has pretty much always consisted of people who write their music all buy themselves, or who may use 1 or 2 others to do one song on a Record, like a Producer, and guess what, It feels more personal, and that's why I listen to those Genres more. I've tried other genres, but it feels more artificial to me

Thats not trough. The monkees were created by men in suits, so we’re many other rock bands of the 60’s. There are stories of men in suits picking up pretty boys ( with no music experience )from the streets and turning them into rockstars. The singer of Jefferson airplane, Gracie did an interview (it’s on KZbin) once where she says rock was commercial and was just a way to make some people rich. Pretty obvious if you think about it. The money some rock acts made definitely inspired many to try to replicate that. It’s how our society works. Survival/greed above integrity/ artistry.

The credits of all 3 of his albums are very well detailed i would say in which who did what. Harry wrote a lot of the songs. They list them in order of percentage and harry is on the top for most of them, but no not all. Kid Harpon has been his Bernie Taupin to the Elton John in a way especially from 2018 to present, but Tyler Johnson has been writing partner since 2016 I believe

While I entirely agree that songwriters deserve significantly more pay and recognition and all too often have the leverage of famous pop stars and producers used against them, I found the attitude towards performers here irritatingly snooty. Being able to perform as a professional singer in front of a crowd at the level a lot of these people do is in many ways closer to being a stage actor than it is a traditional musician, and that's genuinely really difficult and requires honing skills which a lot of people will dismiss out of hand because they frankly don't understand what they are in the first place. Granted, if you can also write your own songs and perform them at that level, well, you're David Bowie or at least Ed Sheeran, you're set. But to some extent it's sort of like expecting every great jazz trumpeter to just be Miles Davis as well, or for that matter for Miles Davis to be Rodgers and Hammerstein. They're not the same set of skills.

As I said in the video, 1) Billions can sing well 2) Tens of millions can perform well on a stage And I'll add here... 3) Probably only millions can write good original music Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Casting doubt on Harry’s contribution towriting his songs when there are pop stars with 20+ co writers on all songs is wild. Harry wrote on all his songs and his co writers has attributed to his song writing talent. He has 3 albums and the cleanest discography. Pls google.
@mattbeatgoeson Жыл бұрын
Oof, this comment is cringy. Look, I understand you're a big fan of Harry Styles. I really like his music. He is an extremely talented singer, but there is no evidence that he contributed that much to the songwriting process nor contributed that little. We simply weren't in the room when they wrote those songs together. Sometimes we need to take a step back from our own bias.
@kaycam249 Жыл бұрын
@@mattbeatgoeson if you really want to question an artist contribution, won’t it make more sense to choose an artist with average of 10-20 plus cowriters on all and I mean all their discography? And there are many of those. As it was that you highlighted was written by Harry and two others. Saying someone else did the most writing out of 3 people and following up with“ we are not there , so we don’t know “ is disingenuous IMO.

Harry is a good example. Not every pop song is written by 10-20 people. And in the beginning of pop songs were written by 1 maximum 3 people. So harry with his 5 people is What is usual in pop music and already a great example of asking who did what? A pop song generally has 3 verses a bridge and a chorus. Those parts can be as short as 2-4 sentences. Harry is the perfect example.
@hansmemling2311 Жыл бұрын
If you want comparison, check Adele. She’s also a huge Popstar but she clearly writes her own stuff. A lot of her songs have only 1 co-writer. 2 at the most. And if you study her come up it’s clear she had a hand in a good portion of her own music. She wrote her own songs and sent a deo to xl records. There she got singed they worked on her demo which became her first album and the rest is history. Harry came up as a pretty puppet, puppeteered by music excecs wanting to make money from gullible teenage girls. Harry and his band were just required to look well and do some low level choreography to make millions hands over fist. Some of the members like Niall were very vocal about wanting to contribute to the song-writing of the one direction songs. They always got denied. Meanwhile harry was perfectly content just being a pretty face and not writing any of the stuff. Then the band splits because Zayn wants to do his own thing. Harry doesn’t want to split at all and tries to hold the group together. You are telling me a guy who was content to sing and dance songs he never wrote and wanted to stay in that situation indefinitely is somewhat credible when forced to go solo? Zayn and Niall are credible because Zayn went his own way to do his own thing artistically and Niall was already vocal about writing his own songs and wanting to do so for one direction. What screams artist to you when you look at Harry? He’s much more comparable to someone like Ariana Grande who’s also more of an actor than an artist. These people act out someone else’s story. That’s okay. But you can’t seriously think they are similar to people with actual artistry and inspiration to write stories both musically and lyrically.
