I see a lot of comments saying that Lisa should get out of the saddle. Yes, we know this already. Please remind yourself that she is a beginner and WE'RE NOT DONE WITH THE SERIES. So far we have covered bikes and trail rules, both of which need to be reviewed before techniques. The workshop in the next video is all about bike control, but this is not in response to the comments. The comments are actually totally counterproductive, since Lisa is actually a real person doing this in front of an international audience of thousands of people. Cut her some slack, or don't watch.

Lisa is doing amazing! You go girl!! I started mountain biking about 5 months ago. It took me about a month just to get the courage to get out of the saddle, even just for a little bit. For a beginner, tails like this can look and feel scary, just takes time and practice to get used to the tails and your bike. Also its great to see other girls getting into mountain biking and thanks a lot Seth for all your great videos they have really been helping me and makes me want to get out and ride more!!

When I was about 7, learning to properly ride out on easy trails and struggling to pedal up little hills, my dad always said to stand up on my pegs. a few years after when I started riding "harder" trails I realised the importance of what he said. Standing on your pegs has to be one of the best tips any new rider can receive.

Love ya work mate! This is such an ideal series for beginners. Forget the snarky comments from all the 'experts' out there picking on all the things they'd do differently. You have a real person, on a real, affordable bike, on real trails, showing the sort of journey most of us have done as beginners. Everyone learns different skills at a different pace and not necessarily in a designated order. Sure, the 'standing up' bit is important, but not as important as getting out there and doing a few laps. That will come naturally. And props to Lisa for being a damn good sport!

Lisa could really benefit from some time on a BMX, or having the seat post slammed. This will force her to no sit down, once the option/crutch is gone she'll have no choice but to ride the bike in a good attack position. I'ld start her out riding around a parking lot, over those little concrete wheel stop curbs they put at the end of parking spots. A pump track after that. Up and down steep grass embankments after that. I think that would really help her confidence out quite a bit; simulating all the possible features on the trail.
@macmurfy2jka8 жыл бұрын
Oh and get her seat up, it's farther to go to get into a good attack position from a saddle at too low a hight. Much lest far from proper hight.
@tamasvarga678 жыл бұрын
It seems you never tried to teach a woman (I don't mean any disrespect) to ride. :) You cannot teach them by forcing to do things as they don't feel secure and you will break instead of boost their confidence. They need different approach and let them do what they feel comfortable with and build slowly from there - unless things come naturally for them. It took me time to realize this when teaching my wife as I was thinking on the same way as you. She hated it and lost confidence but as soon as I let her to do things on her own the way she felt secure. Things has changed drastically and she started to enjoy riding. She felt comfortable and secure on her own way and I could then start slowly building from there by raising the saddle half of an inch at a time, started to lift her bottom up, asking "how to do this" questions etc. As I see Seth's is doing very similarly with Lisa.
@macmurfy2jka8 жыл бұрын
+Tamas Varga not everyone is the same. Your wife sound a lot like my sister, who I turn is a lot like my mother in this regard. Both are totally unteachable if they don't want to learn. Every lead on is passive, until they either realize that the instructor probably does know what is best. They need to come to the realization that they actually do have something learn AND that they want to learn. This process seams to need to happen for most every lesson. Learning these type of skills (action sports, throwing a ball, cooking) need to learned passively. With them, only give advice when it is asked for. Doing otherwise is useless. Teaching them is a slow process.
@macmurfy2jka8 жыл бұрын
+Tamas Varga the above being said, Lisa seems to be more like my child cousin, Rose. She is very willing to push herself outside of her comfort zone. New challenging experiences are her bread and butter. She is much easier to teach new skills to as she seams willing to fail and in the case of MTB, fall. She was terrible at bike control until I had her ride a local pump track. While she missed parts of that lesson, she did take away a new understanding of riding and was much better on the trails. Rose wants all the advice she can get. She'll listen to anything she understands and kinda disregard the rest. With her, everything is about putting her in a situation that illustrates what she needs to learn, having her do it wrong, instructing her on how to do it better, and then letting her do it again with the instructions in mind; putting lessons in context. Girls like Rose and (I am assuming; it's hard to tell from a KZbin video) Lisa benefit from the type of exercise I suggested.
@macmurfy2jka8 жыл бұрын
+Tamas Varga so in summation, yes if Lisa is like your wife, no if she is like Rose. I've taught a number of people to ride, at this point so I kind know what I'm talking about hear. I am also an archery coach, so there's that as well. Lisa is doing great! Keep up the good work guys!

But this series has opened up a whole new viewing experience for me. You see, both my wife and I are mountain bike enthusiasts. Me much more than her, but I love the fact that she does go with me. Not all the time, but some of the time. And usually when we go, I'll do a lap with her at an easy pace, and then she'll sit and read a book while I do a lap or two at my usual pace. Anyways, I just wanted to thank you for these videos with Lisa. They are absolutely perfect. At least for my situation. My wife and I actually watched them together and they were so relevant. It was great for my wife to watch and see Lisa's experiences. I think it was an ah ha moment! So I just wanted to say thanks for creating that opportunity. Really good video. Could you do one that i could show the wife about getting off the saddle and getting her weight back as she may listen to someone else. : - p

+PPC4 That's not my wife, however she is a beginner... you guys really need to cut Lisa some slack.

?! I know that you said so in the earlier video. I mean when i'm out biking with the wife (also a part time beginner) she doesn't get up and off the back of the saddle enough, she doesn't listen to me so i was suggesting you could do a tutorial on it that's all. I didn't mean any of that to be misconstrued as offence to you or Lisa.

yea guys she's doing great she's just a beginner she has to work on getting out of the saddle but seth will get her there

Good video. I like your comment on progression by repeating the beginner's trail until you've mastered all of the features as they are more mandatory on the more difficult trails. I was a beginner and rode an intermediate trail maybe once before entering the Palos Meltdown near Chicago. It was 21 miles through the forest with double-black-diamond for part of it. I went from zero-to-hero in five minutes. Ouch! But I made it even though I was dead last.

Great videos, Seth. I purchased a MTB a couple of months ago and I can say that your videos have been a great help, if not an inspiration for me as a new rider. Tell Lisa to keep up the good work also! Riding makes us stronger!

Seth you're a good teacher, but i belive she would be WAAY better if she got out of the saddle more, she's sitting too much and for me it's easier to control the bike while standing. #noobtip

Thank you so much for making this video. As a complete beginner, it's really encouraging and inspiring to watch someone else learning and progressing. Your tips have helped me to feel more confident before even setting out onto a trail. Lisa is doing an amazing job!

That's an advanced lesson. You need to build up strength and endurance to be able to do it reliably, otherwise it will wear you down quickly.

Another Sweet vid Seth. Sound advice for starters for sure. Even those that have been riding for a while. Lisa is a champ for taking on MTB having limited prior riding experience, and letting you document her progress into the sport. As I have experienced myself, and others have pointed out in the comments, standing up is a really critical skill and not limited to beginners. I see this with roadies that want to take up MTB. They generally have strong legs and basic bike handling skills like balancing, but they just wont get out of that seat, making for a difficult transition. I personally think that getting comfortable out of the saddle is 'the' fundamental MTB skill that must be mastered early, but it's also very boring to work on. Whereas riding green trails is much more fun for beginners. However, former BMX'ers generally have the opposite issue of weak legs and/or low stamina but are not afraid of tackling trail features or crashing. Keep up the great work Seth.

it would really help if Lisa stood up on the bike.
