Sir, I'm a 73 year old, playing once a week and little or no practice in between rounds. I play for enjoyment, not competition, and I watched your video 2 nights ago. I played yesterday and was thinking about your comments on the grip. I have a strong left hand but my right was getting weaker, something I hadn't noticed until I remembered this video. I got my right stronger per this video, and was hitting the daylights out of the ball. Thanks for the easy to understand advice, and I need to remember that, if something in my swing goes awry, check the basics: stance, ball position, and grip. My compliments on a great, understandable video.

This is fantastic, I love the passion you have with golf... you can tell from the way you speak it's pure fun for you. I have been playing for 2 years and still suck, but not giving up. Interestingly I always felt the strong grip was natural but I spent months experimenting with more neutral. Your explanation of the grip with the hammer makes so much sense. What are your most recommended drills I can do to improve? My issue is I hit the ground too hard and have trouble grazing the grass (unless I do a half swing... my chipping game is great). I think I have a more stiff stance like you showed I we shouldn't do. Will practice this, any other recommendations? Thanks for all the content!

This is the 3rd time I have watched this lesson thoroughly and each time I have picked up one more piece of the puzzle! 1 My grip - strong, flexible and tight really helps me to “cement” my arm/club unit.2 Cutting through the stem helps focus my mind on the real task, compress the ball and send my energy in the correct direction. 3 The two ball strike, for me, is proof of concept - long, focused swing, extensive contact, and the ball strike is about 4”in front of the first ball! This is how to compress a golf ball - effortlessly!

Yes….THIS !!!! After numerous years following and umpteen repeat viewings of assorted early vids, another sudden epiphany realizing the weight of the impacts good and bad. Toe up prevents releasing into ground as much (shaft torque will throw toe more downwards…I can confirm from the problem side ! LOL). Might even promote more advantageous spin too !? The angled club grip in hand does not so much literally restrict actual wrist cock but reduces that natural 90 degrees arms/shaft angle down to around 60 degrees (maybe even less)…so (imo) reduces overall length of backswing arc and the two hinge trebuchet effect Shawn has often illustrated and therefore less speed and power !)…the steeper that grip angle in hand the more angle loss. Other indirect benefits I am perceiving upon completion of viewing Having your hands more beneath you can generate more power (twisted spiral physics…) And…promotes a flatter swing plane which can also generate more speed AND in my case…(right swing, left eye dominant), it allows me to SEE ball way way better longer into my backswing as my eyes are not obstructed by my arm/shoulder taking club back…that is HUGE for me because otherwise…a) I will tend to shorten length of my backswing which is immediate power loss….or b) tilt my head which in turn changes spine angle and I hit down on the ball ! (not certain if the improved visibility is a direct result of lower hands…or because a little further from the ball and not so steep…or maybe a bit of both). Much appreciated as always. Shawn loves to talk so it often demands repeat viewings but you eventually realize that few words were wasted and that what you needed was there all along…still the best. Vintage Shawn Clement videos…the gifts that keep on giving !! Drove by RH course yesterday…miss the good old days when you were HERE.

However, since watching this video and changing my grip my striking has improved immensely. I now "remove the cup" when holding the club in umbrella mode by slightly changing my wrist angle. This gives me a "flat" left wrist throughout my swing rather than trying to manipulate the clubface in backswing/downswing.

Shawn, it's kinda funny you espoused Moe Norman in a previous video. There is no doubt that Moe is acknowledge to be one of the best modern day ball striker. Yet, the trade mark of the one plane swing is the Ulnar deviation and high hand aka "The Rod" as Moe would say. Complete opposite to what you are teaching here with the lower hands and then the dig at the body rising - well, the one plane the body doesn't rise (Moe does not) as the trail foot is down and rolling at impact - thats what keeps the spacing. The 2 plane swing, you have to create space and those who are unable have to make space by going up - as you pointed out. The one plane is totally different but it's just the irony you would use Moe. Other than that - good stuff, still enjoy your videos especially the cut the grass for chipping everything. Thanks

Human anatomy is built for this! When waiting for a pitch in baseball, aren’t the wrists cupped? Tennis, fishing, hammering, all cupped (which is simply hinged on the anatomical snuff boxes in our book and cupped would be collapsed because if one is cupped, the other is bowed)

For those who use more of a single plane swing, with the arms being more extended at address, should there be a feeling of tension along the tendon then runs along the thumb to the wrist? Also, great work as always Shawn, you're the only recommended source for golf if anyone asks!

Thanks Chris! What is important is the secure hold and solid posture over the ground to be able to stay with the shot; everyone has different range of motion in the wrists and Moe would be the first to tell you to stay strain free in your actions and let the swing go to your target. Moe loved the secure grip and stayed beautifully with his shots for his anatomy. Maybe a video in there to help golfers understand if they are single plane or dual plane...🤔

Any kind of “body part positioning” tends to backfire as we are terrible at it. We cannot see ourselves. So we need a solid TASK to deliver through to the target with and let the body parts find their place to accommodate the task. That is where you will find your swing.

There is a lot of confusing info online. For instance, what you are saying is counter to the way Moe Norman set up. ( Arguably the best ball striker of the golf ball of all time). I also noticed that Savanah raises her arms just before her backswing very much in the position Moe starts from. I'm not saying you are wrong, just confused.

Yes! And this can work for many! I am talking about STATIC POSTURES that are too tall and not dynamic enough; Moe was THROUGH THE BALL TOWARDS HIS TARGET!!

Your swing is way more upright than what is taught by most professionals. It looks like an anti-hook swing. Most golfers are slicers and a flatter swing plane promotes a better clubhead path through impact.

This is what they would have you believe…you should see the improvements around here; 1 to 3 clubs more with irons, towering long irons, bombs with driver, gorgeous touch with wedges…Bubba, Justin Thomas, Brooks, Jack Nicklaus, Dustin, and so many more!! You want to tech them a flat swing?😝
@bobpegram80423 жыл бұрын
@@golflessons - Went to KZbin and looked at their swings. Justin Thomas swings along his shoulder line which is flat. Hogan was flat. Snead was along his shoulder line. Mickelsaon is along his shoulder line. Dustin Johnson is just slightly above his shoulder line as is Koepka. Nicklaus was upright (plane above shoulder line). Bubba Watson is upright. Your swing is more upright than all of theirs. I went and looked again and figured out what it is that makes your swing look different. Every one of the pros we mentioned except Watson has his hands above or behind his right shoulder at the top of his backswing. Yours hands are are in front of your right shoulder between your right shoulder and your neck almost over your right ear. ***By the way, your lesson on keeping the hands relatively low is good. The grip is at right angles to the palm. Allows way more wrist mobility and clubhead speed.

I am so conflicted. I love your mental approach Shawn, but on the other hand Todd Graves is one of the most accurate golfers I have ever seen. And being the 'apprentice' to the master Moe Norman, he advocates 'weak left hand' with 'strong right hand'. Moe called it 'the rod and claw'. You are both genuinely great golfers, coaches and human beings. It's just so annoyingly befuddling that you have such extremely conflicting views on grip. Still luv ya tho, lol.

Well that is the thing; if the anatomy of a student fits something that “looks like” single plane, he is going to get that and I am just as comfortable teaching that; this video addresses an issue I see regularly on my teaching deck. What I teach is the HUMAN MACHINE ON PLANET EARTH WITH TASK method and whatever fits the person’s anatomy and mind best, that is what we are going with. I will never pigeon hole anyone into any method to save face.
