Thanks for listing all of these products! My hair is about shoulder blade in length and I get it trimmed every 10 weeks. She cuts off about an inch or less based on how it’s doing. I was blow drying once a month until I bought a Dyson dryer last November. Now, to justify the expense and because it doesn’t take as long to dry using the Dyson, I’ve been blow drying it 3-4 a month. My hair does look better when I blow dry it so, I might start doing it more often and see how my hair reacts. 😁

I have a big question, and I hope you might have ideas, Justin! I have to use dandruff shampoo because I have plaque psoriasis. It's moderate on my scalp, and usually in remission. But I have to use the shampoo to treat my scalp continually. Do you know of a shampoo that still has active ingredients but is GOOD FOR YOUR HAIR?? I use a conditioner by Redken designed for my hair type -- because I don't use the conditioner on my scalp just the middle to the ends. I really would love to know your opinion. THANK YOU for all the great videos.

As a long-time hairstylist (32 years and counting!!) I too, have told these lies....when we know better, we do better! We must evolve, along with our products! When I first began my career, we were encouraging our clients to come for color with dirty hair, and now, we know better. Same with perms. Our products have evolved and gotten better, so must we. I am also in awe of Abbey and what I have learned from her. As far as how frequently we should cut, let your hair be your guide, but if you are caring for it in the BEST possible way, you can go upwards of 6 months between trims.(I have personally!) The right haircare routine makes ALL the difference.

My sis and I were sent to the "hair dresser" every 2 weeks. Our hair was only lightly trimmed about once per year, and done so in extremely tiny pieces - only enough to snip off split ends. This video was brilliant Justin! I fell for the myth of hair 'training' a couple of years ago encouraged by a KZbin hair stylist and I got myself into a real pickle that I am still trying to resolve. I kept persevering and all that happened was I ended up tying my hair up to disguise my oily scalp which caused hair traction hair loss and then seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp itself. Absolute nightmare 😟 Then I got lumps on my head and itching, it all just got worse and worse. Add to that, extreme life stress and `I now have thinner, weaker hair prone to split ends. I watched a couple of derms on KZbin speak about scalp care and I am slowly trying to go back to my pre-brain washing MO. I wash my scalp daily and have started to increase the detox shampoo to more than once a week. My mids to ends can get dry and very flyaway so I sometimes apply conditioner to wet hair prior to shampooing (advice of online derm) and that can help. I have also just ditched all the 'extra' steps I was brain-washed into following e.g. leave-in conditioner and heat protectants that all collectively weigh my hair down. I had been using Necessaire The Shampoo but it is so expensive so now use a much cheaper, also unperfumed shampoo most days then a light conditioner, followed by Bumble and Bumble lightweight detangler primer and things are def starting to improve. And leaving my hair 6 months to get a cut just encouraged it to get straggly and full of split ends so I will now get it trimmed every 3-4 months. Everything you spoke about was absolutely 'on the money' for me and thank you for calling out the absolute BS being spouted by a well known hair salon owner on KZbin, who I am sure means well but you cannot adopt a one size fits all approach. As someone with oily hair since i was about 14 years old, washing my hair daily is far better for my scalp - it can't be 'trained'. Thanks again for talking sense!

To look and feel it's best my hair needs washing daily, always has. Some shampoos work well for that, some don't - drugstore, high end? Doesn't seem to make any odds, and sometimes I just want something thats smells beautiful and I enjoy using. I've never been "good" with using hair dryers or styling tools and am trying to incorporate blow drying into my routine ( I'm lazy, so this is hard 😂). I have it trimmed every time its coloured so 7/8 weeks. It's the tinest trim to tidy the ends and get rid of any split ends. My fine hair, 50+ hair is definitely now more susceptible to breakage, so to me its not about making it grow, but stopping it breaking.

As someone who is perimenopausal, with fine hair, that is now thinning, all of this makes sense. I love Abbey's education since her trilcology training. I've tried all the recommendations. Even using the Nizoral. I agree about air dry vs blow dry - my hair not only looks like shit, it smells after one day of just air drying. Right now I'm using Pureology's Volume shampoo and conditioner. As always, volumizing shampoos tangle my hair in the shower, but at least my hair doesn't get stinking after a day or two. Idk. I think everything takes consistency and time to figure out if it works for you. I tried keeping my hair long (just above the shoulder is "long" for me), while doing all the things, but in the end cut it to a short stacked bob because. Because. Well that was a lot of rambling, but so has been my hair journey 🤪 Happy Thanksgiving!

First: mad appreciation for the musical interludes--life giving. Second: Thank you for the manual of helpful and thought provoking information in this video. Third--I have historically, since I was young, been overwhelmed by my thick hair and my perception that I was not equipped to style it. At age 50, I am slowly stepping out of this perception, though in baby steps. Part of what has helped me is washing it twice/week instead of every day, and washing at night, before bed. I then braid it, and it dries partially. I then use an airwrap to dry it. It helps to cut down on how long it takes to dry to let it partially air dry. It's usually still damp but not as wet when I dry it. I have a long way to go with haircuts and styling, but I am less afriad and having more fun. Your videos are helpful in this process. I’m completely done going to the hairdresser now - I had one that could “trim” hair - but recently messed that up as well and I lost 2 years of growth in 20 min. Since trusting some drug store products again - been working on figure out what is causing my sometimes dry most likely scalp - using lots of bond products and conditioners generously - washing more often. Spending less- wild! Hoping to cut my own hair soon too 😂.

Every hairdresser I’ve ever had told me there is no reason I can’t wash it daily, given the type of hair I have, one even told me I could wash it twice a day if I needed to, the washing wouldn’t be the problem, the hairdryer and heat would cause the damage. I can’t tell you how many people told me washing it daily was making it oilier, but after experimenting for a few years with every second day washing, I can tell you it did nothing, I always had greasy hair the second day. I’m going back to daily washes. All those people who told me I could train my scalp were 1000% wrong.

I wash daily. Friends tell me I’m crazy! I have naturally thinner long blonde hair and it is prone to a greasy appearance if I don’t wash daily. Recently added a heat protectant and it has made a huge difference in the health of my hair. I’ll say, being in my late 40s- a woman of a *cough, cough* certain age, I have been struggling more with volume and my hair’s take to curl (which I do daily). And OMG! Yes! My hair has seemed to grown more slowly. I was freaking out. My hairdresser told me to make sure I have it trimmed every 6 weeks for its overall health. Of course it wasn’t growing!!! I’ve recently moved to every 12 weeks and, shocker, my hair actually does grow! Who knew. Love your videos! They’ve been helpful learning tools!

I agree- look at your ends and if they look dry or crispy trim them- otherwise, leave them alone. My hair is curly and so the ends have a tendency to look dry no matter what but I am happy to know that I can wash my hair more frequently because so many times I’ve wanted to and thought “oh it’s just gonna dry my hair out or be bad”. I *love* this! 👏🏻 I'm 64 and wash (and blow dry/diffuse) my hair daily. Always have. I started wearing my wavy, curly hair in it's _natural state_ about 5 years ago and washing daily is a huge no-no in the curly girl community. Enter the 'train your scalp' theory. 😐 Um, no thanks. I quickly learned that, in general, what might work for other wavy/curlies doesn't necessarily work for my silver, fine hair so I do my own thing. I do use a clarifying shampoo about once a week (I like Kinky Curly Come Clean shampoo) and I follow-up with BrioGeo Avocado and Kiwi Mask as a "deep conditioner". I love the BrioGeo mask because it has no protein, which can make my hair feel dry or straw-like. Anyway, sorry this response is way too long 😆and thank you for this great info!

I am 76 and my fine, thin hair is wavy curly, more in the back bottom and less on the top front. My curly Bob looks great if I have time to air dry it and keep fluffing it up. If I’m going out, then my diffuser dryer for curly hair set on warm works better. Years ago I would blow my hair straight with a round brush and then touch it up with a flat iron. Then it became yellowish from the iron, and would star getting frizzy from the 90% humidity I live in on the Oregon coast. I gave in to the curly look. I have to use a lot of product to get curl definition rather than wavy frizz. I use either the entire WEN line or wash with Clairol Shimmering Lights shampoo and conditioner, and put Garnier styling gel in it after towel drying. I so envy straight haired women.

OMG! That makes so much sense to me. I started washing my hair less as my hairdresser want me to. My hair is now kinky and brittle, plus I'm losing it in droves. I used to have super thick and straight hair. Oh how I miss it! I know my age and stress levels play a part in this, but such a drastic change doesn't make sense to me.

My scalp is just fine washing my hair once per week (as I was taught to do and have done since a child). I have no scalp problems and too much shampooing does dry my hair out. I rinse my hair daily in hot water, but only wash it with shampoo once per week. I do rinse because I work around an airfield sometimes and don't want things like fuel fumes in my hair.

Oh my God!!!! You just blew my hair!!! I disagreed with my hair stylist about how often I should wash my hair. I used to wash it every day. But then my stylist told me I need to cut down as much as possible so that I only washed it once a week! Well, I managed to get to twice a week, but I've been noticing that my scalp feels kind of yucky. So just this weekend, I bought a bottle of clarifying shampoo at the grocery store (a big no-no) and I went to town!!! I washed it Sunday and again today (Tuesday). My scalp feels great! My hair is fluffy (I put a tiny bit of conditioner on the ends) AND I blew(?)-dried the living hell out of it (warm setting, continuous motion, and a small amount of heat protectant)! And I feel great!!! I must confess I was feeling a tinge of guilt until I watched this video! Anyway, thank you!❤

Trim when needed. What's the point in having super long hair which is broken, dry and frazzled?
@tzoe875Ай бұрын
I’m glad to hear that drying the hair can be as beneficial as air drying. My hair takes forever and a day to air dry. I try not to overuse the hair dryer but for me it’s much more realistic than total air drying (the only exception for me is when I visit a dry climate like Vegas or phoenix). I think that all of this goes back to finding a balance that works best for you, at the stage of life you are in. My 24yr old hair was dramatically different than my 56yr old hair. I would have been a greasy mess if I waited 3-4 days to wash my hair.
@PoshPilgrim1776Ай бұрын
I have expensive highlights and shampooing frequently would cause the color to fade faster. To slow down that process I bought a Jolie shower filter so the chemicals in the water are removed. I've noticed that by shampooing every third day instead of every other day I get little pimples, possibly milia, on the scalp though. So I think I will rinse with plain water the second day and shampoo on the third to see if that helps.

Although washing my hair every day is a styling pain (curly), I'm happy it doesn't hurt my hair because I like having just washed hair! The only problem I've found with less expensive shampoos/conditioners is their fragrance! I cannot tolerate florals in my hair and many of the "drug store" brands have a fragrance that is too much for me. I will happily pay more for a fragrance I enjoy. Thanks for the video!

I wake up with curls that last for days. I do not wash everyday my scalp couldn't handle it. I prefer to wash 2x's a week. But my roots never get greasy. Sulphate free shampoo, in my experience, is an ideal product for daily shampooing. Hot climates often necessitate daily hair washing-one shampoo, rather than two-unless you use a lot of styling products! Heat styling products, such as flat irons and curling tongs, likely cause the most damage. In my experience, Keratin treatments are great-I have had them for years-BUT, the flat irons DO damage the hair shaft with repeat (4 monthly treatments. )

I literally have been wanting to watch your videos since I saw you colab with some of my favorite You Tube beauty channels. Did not disappoint. Anyhow, I am almost 61 years old with long, healthy, thick, medium textured hair. People ask me all the time how I get my hair so long. My response is always the same. Stop cutting your hair!!! 🤷 I cut my hair 2-3 times a year and usually get a partial balayage at the same time. I color the roots myself once a month with Herbatint. Easy Peasy. In the Heat of our summers I have to wash my hair almost daily because of our extremely hot and humid climate. In the short Winter months I can get away without washing my hair for 3 + days. While I do sometimes blow my hair dry and style after the shower, I confess that most of the time I am too tired to blow dry my hair at night when I take my shower. A scrunchie pineapple on top of my head works great. My hair is still damp in the morning and I blow it dry then. Honestly, I get complimented on my hair often. Works for me. 🤷 (PS: I am glad you included Abby's videos. I have literally just binged on them. Trying to watch our pennies I had tried many of her drug store affordable options. So far I love them!)

I’m in Canada. I lost 1/2 my hair due to prednisone. It grew back, but it grew back ultra curly🙄 like when I was little. My mum used rags to get my curls. It was beautiful. Until she let a neighbour cut it😡 pixie cut. I use Nioxin and it’s great for thinning and growing hair, but drys out my ends. Shampoo twice a week. So I put in leave in conditioner and only use heat every two weeks. I do a dry blow out. I don’t have split ends just dryness and I think trimming helps greatly to help the hair from dryness, tangling or matting. A silk pillow case and turban are also very helpful. At night my hair stays nice for the morning. Trimming is a must for fine thinner hair, but we are all different. I don’t think trimming makes your hair grows faster but it does feel thicker when the thinner ends are trimmed. I’m lucky my hair grows very fast. When I have hair hahaha! Thanks Justin and Dionna, Happy Holidays!🎄🇨🇦🎉🍗

My four daughters have extremely curly hair - blowdrying it to either 1. stretch the curls until dry or 2. actually STRAIGHTEN their hair - has helped the most in allowing their hair to grow long and healthy. Explanation (for us, at least) - when we air dried, the shrinkage during the drying process seemed to cause their hair to break little bits off and be generally weaker; the longer, blowdried length of hair didn't tangle up and the strands "glided" together more, therefore causing less breakage and more health. And yes, we go curly often and enjoy our curls, but we can enjoy our blowdried straight hair as well :)

My hair has grown very long over the last few years, I don’t get it trimmed until I need to. I can tell when my ends start getting a little knotty when I run the brush through that it needs a trim. I’ve tried budget products and very expensive ones, in general I find the salon products better than the budget ones.
Great video. On the hair drying question, I recently started using air dry cream after I towel dry my hair and it seems to cut the drying time quite a bit. What’s your take on those? Also, I’ll leave a question that I would love to see addressed in a video. I flake quite a bit three days after I dye my hair. It’s likely an allergic reaction. I’ve tried several different brands and it’s the same. But I need to cover my grays! Any suggestions?

I was washing my hair twice a week but found that my scalp was suffering for it so now I shampoo 3x per week and both my hair and scalp are happier. I always blow dry my curls with a diffuser and mainly “hover diffuse” which is basically drying at a distance and always use a leave in conditioner/ heat protectant. I only use a clarifying shampoo every two weeks or so. My sister is a hairstylist and is a Shampoo/ conditioner snob, meaning she only thinks high end shampoos and conditioners are good for your hair. She’s less insistent on stylers. I use both high end and drugstore. Everyone should do whatever is best for their schedule and scalp.

I have tried repeatedly to get out of the daily washing routine, but it has never worked for me. I have thick, fine, slightly wavy, naturally blonde hair that leans dry. My hair requires a good amount of product to do anything other than lay flat against my scalp. Even when I wear my hair in a pixie with lots of layering (which I'm about to do again as of tomorrow - yay!), it requires a lot of product to hold it in the gravity-defying styles I prefer. Despite having somewhat dry hair, the addition of natural oils each day to the products I use creates just enough weight to makes my hair too heavy to style. Thank you for validating that daily washing isn't always wrong!

Recently I have noticed a softened way of wearing the bob, with subtle layers, and allowing your hair to look s bit undone (I am not a fundi on hair terms). People here in our village keep trying to tidy up my hair!!! IKIDYOUNOT!!! It is NOT untidy, just a little undone, much like Dionna wears hers....My hair is naturally slightly wavy, so this style is wonderful for me, it takes so little effort. Besides I want to look fresh (not younger) for my age.....😂

Almost 60 and just got a pixie to grow out my gray, have been washing my hair daily for years and will continue to do so plus use heat styling (when it's longer), the only difference now is that I concentrate on protecting it and now that it's not colored, I'm hopeful it will stay a bit healthier although gray is a bit more coarse. But with fine hair I'm all about the courseness thus far! I switch around between clarifying, bond repairing and also use nizoral once per week with a scalp massager. Use heat protectant always and hair oil occasionally. So far so good!

Used to shampoo daily. Now every 3 to 4 days, but I must admit, freshly washed hair is my best and most cooperative hair! I have a good density but very fine curly, wavy and straight hair in different parts of my head. It’s not easy to style and I constantly change my style since it looks different every day and causes confusion what to do. I use a deep cleansing product since I don’t shampoo daily, but I do a 2nd wash alternating with either a volumizing, moisturizing or purple shampoo, then condition. I need to wrap my hair in a turban towel to absorb most of the moisture before blowing it out. If I want it straight, I do a full blow out. It’s seldom truly straight, the curls ultimately rebound especially in the back. If I want to embrace my curls, I rough dry, then scrunch the curls and let it air dry from there. If I let it air dry 100%, it looks lifeless with a lot of frizz and flyaways regardless of product. Sometimes I blow the crown and fringe straight and let the curls, waves do their thing in the back. I have learned to accept and appreciate the fact my hair looks different every day.

I have super coarse strands and a sh*t ton of them! 😅 Washing once a week doesn’t work when it has any type of length. The scalp is always sore and made it sore to even brush it! I do try to concentrate the shampoo mostly in the scalp and not scrub the mid-shaft/ends rigorously. I am trying to grow it out again and have expressly asked my stylist not to “trim” it as I was not having any growth at all.

In videos about how frequently to wash, nobody ever talks about just doing a really good rinse. I have found that only rinsing and massaging my scalp works fine for one or two of my 2-3 "washes" a week. Also, I air-dry as I shower at night and it dries before I go to bed, so I don't know what my results would be if I were using a dryer.

Finally, I started washing less frequently and that along with some pre shampoo tree tea oil has solved the irritated flaky scalp issue. So, while 5 years ago I shampooed every other day and wore my hair straight, now I shampoo every 4-5 days and wear my hair wavy. And, yes, sometimes I shampoo more often if needed; ie sweaty, dirty, wrong product in hair. I just listen to my hair.

If you are losing hair, beware of your conditioner. I find that some conditioners are too strong and cause me to lose hair. Take note of how much hair is in the drain after you rinse your shampoo, and again after you rinse the conditioner. If there is too much after the conditioner, try changing it.
