Using a fruit bowl or something lke it might be helpful, because it's bright and shiny and colourful. You can even put more stable vegetables in there, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes (which are much better when you don't put them in the fridge). I buy cherry tomatoes specifically for snacking on, so red and sweet nummy nummy. If you can see it you're more likely to use it. :)

This is my theory why fast food chains have decided to jack up prices so high recently. They spent decades getting multiple generations addicted to the engineered flavor, and now were willing to pay restaurant level prices for shit food. 😂

That's what Frito Lays have been doing. I do the tagging changes at the store I work at and I always see the prices increase every once and a while. I'm never buying product from them again at their current price unless they're on a huge sale.

I honestly believe this is why people don't want to eat vegetables. When you cut ultraprocessed foods and eat fruits and vegetables you cook yourself, your taste buds adapt and they can taste fantastic, but if all you eat is fast food they might as well be flavorless.

Learning to resist cravings is hard, but worth it. It helped me put it in perspective when I asked myself this: Have you ever had a craving for food from a restaurant that closed, or the specialty of a family member who took their secret recipe to the grave? Meaning a craving for a food you absolutely could not procure. Were you ultimately fine? Did you have a moment of sadness once you realized you couldn't have that food even if you tried, and then go on to eat something else instead? And were you fine? You were fine, weren't you? You're still fine.

The problem is when you eat everything under the sun because you have a craving and denied yourself. If you can reduce the indulgence to just a little (dang willpower) then you might be able to stop there. It's not about feeling like you're going to die. It's about feeling like you're lacking something.

@@jenniferpearce1052 this is where I bring in portion control/out of sight out of mind and also flip the entire mechanism on it's head to encourage and reward portion control. I use multiple very small containers from things like special salts I buy to have a small quanitiy but high amount of variety. The variety makes it vastly easier to be a lot more mindful while eating, and is one of the very things that increases our food response- which can also heighten the good feelings/full feeling afterwards.

Resisting should only last for a few weeks, if you still get massive regular cravings, then the foods you are still eating might be fueling the cravings. We know some dairy products, gluten, etc. turn into opioid-like substances, we know sugar is addicting, we know that when we physiologically crave salt we tend to eat foods that our body/mind associates with high salt (e.g. chips / crisps / other junk food). For me, complete elimination of those addictive substances works way better than any attempt at moderation, as well as getting enough salt from my regular food. (edit: and yeah, avoid food marketing where you can)

Now you've got me thinking. In prehistoric times, the only frictionless foods were raw fruits and vegetables. Apparently the pattern was they'd graze all day on this low-calorie//high trace nutrient stuff, then in the evening, after hours of preparation, fuel up on high-calorie, high protein stuff, then start the day with the leftovers from that last meal, and then go out and graze again. So the "I see it I eat it" impulse applied to the lowest calorie foods available. Interesting! So maybe workplaces should have all-day all-you-can eat salad bars instead of vending machines?

It's also worth noting that prior to agriculture almost all of those foods weren't available but for a couple months out of the year, and were way lower in sugar than they are now (fruit at least). So the instinct is almost certainly to coerce us into eating any calories available on the rare occasion we could.

Having cravings and an appetite is actually a great thing. I have end stage liver and kidney disease, and it is terrible losing the ability to look forward to eating. I also don't store glucose as well. I am basically everyone's dream. Yet you need food to survive, and eating food becomes a chore without the craving or appetite behind it. Or a real struggle with every bite at worse. I hate eating now. It is a hassle. I want my appetite back.

I've had that feel... Psychologically, though... But still. I feel you in a way. Hmmmmmm I don't know if cannabis might help? Though, lacking the feeling of appetite, I don't know if it might actually help. It could be worth a shot, if you don't mind getting high. But at the point you are, I'd imagine it'd be a non issue. Starting low and slow would avoid a panic attack from going too high and being unacustomed with the effects 😅

I feel you, i got stomach paralysis or gastroparesis, never got much appetite and cravings arent there, whenever i do eat its bile time or just ferments in my stomach

I lose all appetite with stress, which can lead to rapid weight loss, and a hard time keeping food down. If you have any advice from your experiences on how to manage your aversion to food, or what foods you find most manageable, I’d truly benefit and would love to hear it. I agree, it is so hard to have no appetite, or a full on aversion to eating. Sending you positive thoughts!

I have ridiculous issues with appetite in connection with stress and ptsd and various health issues. THC has been by far the biggest help, it takes my appetite from "food is not edible" to pretty much normal. I have low dose edibles most days and it's been life changing, no more being weak from hunger but physically unable to eat anything. Ps walking helps a lot too, anything above 8000 steps has a palpable effect.

Back when I was in a situation where I could meticulously control my diet, the way I was able to cut sugar and processed foods out of my life was when I got rid of all foods of convenience (pre packaged, pre-cooked non perishables i.e canned soup, etc) and bought only single ingredient foods. That made it so that the only time I ate was when I was ACTUALLY ACTUALLY hungry. Hungry enough where I was willing to actually go through the effort of grilling that chicken, and prepping that squash. I recognize that this does not fit everyone's situation or life, this is just what worked for me who was a single working professional living alone at the time.

I have lost 90 pounds in the last 9 or so months. I have been documenting my ups and downs and trying to figure out what works for me. This is a diet only, no exercise type lifestyle as my work is very sedentary. Right now, I am smitten with boiled eggs and pickles. The eggs take time to shell and the pickles are a zero calorie food. I started this diet with a meat (carnivore like) start and knocked down/out the carbs. I ate as much as I liked and found myself eating less and less. It is very difficult for me as my wife and kids are not part of it. Even my wife keeps pushing me to eat foods I just don't need. I have been journaling all of this so I can help others get to their goals faster.

I managed to lose >54kg by just not eating it. I never really understood why it was so hard for others to quit junk food but now I see why. Whenever it comes up in your brain when you’re hungry you’re almost always just wanting to get it. But I learnt to treat it like poison than food. Edit: It wasn’t at all a linear journey, as at one point I had massively regained a lot of weight but over time lost it all over the course of a few months.

another important thing about this is finding a way to separate "cravings" from "hunger" and identifying the difference. usually, when you are craving something , you aren't really hungry for calories so much as a specific nutrient. sometimes it's something you don't need like sugar, but other times it can be something as simple as salt. i didn't exactly mean to tie this into your sponsor, but sometimes, when i am craving something, just drinking some electrolyte cocktail can shut up the cravings when i feel a little "snack-y". our bodies already have fat storage anyhow so in most cases, we aren't eating for the calories in the first place

This!! I also find taking a multivitamin regularly helps reduce my cravings too. After about a week of taking care of my micronutrient needs, snacking usually goes away too.

Getting off sugar and going very low carb four years ago completely turned off my food reward system. I eat because it’s an annoyance to be hungry. I never look at something and think, “Oooh, that looks delicious!” I could look at a pile of rocks just the same as a gourmet spread. It’s a bummer but I was obese and felt horrible, which was worse. For whatever reason, beverages still hit right, I enjoy the hell out of my morning coffee.

I think of the sit down and focusing on your food as getting your money's worth out of that food. We say we love food but turn around and eat it in such a way that we don't even remember it.

As someone who has binge eating disorder (working with a dietitian & have been doing better!) I 100% agree with all of this. There’s a podcast called “brain over binge” & it says it all in the name of the podcast. It’s more of a mind matter than anything!

One of the things that helped me was accepting that binges can happen, understanding that it is not a good thing, trying to understand why it happened and not beating myself up about it, ie. analyze the situation, but don't dwell on negative feelings over it

Calorie In - Calorie Out is a very complex equation when it comes to bio science, but it holds 100% true. A calorie and how it is obtained, used, and stored has complexities on the In/Out but will always hold true. Total Cal change = Calorie In - Calorie Out

what many people don't consider though, is how those calories are used in the body. Proteins, for example are much harder to digest and in turn consume more calories while you're digesting them than other foods, resulting in less calories actually "arriving" in your system. This is just one example of many. Like was said in the video, not all foods are equal and it sure as hell will be a heck of a lot harder to lose weight on 1.5k calories of carbs than on 1.5k calories of protein.

CICO means nothing. If it did counting calories would work but it doesn't. Weight loss only happens when you eat well and repair the metabolic damage that your body has sustained from years of eating poison pretending to be food. Not before.

About a month and a half ago I started following these rules. I also started doing my own version of "flexible intermittent fasting" and general avoidance of sugar, among some other things. But these rules were a real breakthrough for me to be more mindful of what I'm eating, as well as satisfied with what I'm eating, and able to resist cravings and not look back. I started at 330 lbs and am now below 300 for the first time in 5 years. I still have a long way to go. But I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for giving me clear, direct advice that helped me fulfill my goals that I have struggled with for my entire life. Thank you.

Thank you for saying that cravings are natural and good! I'm actually alarmed at how heavily appetite-suppressing drugs are being marketed to me online. We are headed in a dangerous direction if the answer is just get on drugs because the world is too crazy for us to practice self-control.

It's weird because I live in Canada where it's been illegal to advertise pharmaceuticals for my entire life. Now I'm getting ads for one of those drugs on Canadian Spotify. It gives me the creeps when it comes on! Also, my mother is taking it and it's making her feel sick. A whole other level of ick.

ohhh, I needed this. I've pretty much trained myself to not even go into the chips/cookie/candy aisles at the grocery store for myself, but I still have to have snack-packs of chips around for a weekly meeting of friends that I host, and having them so close by gets WAY too tempting sometimes. It also doesn't help that there is a McDonalds LITERALLY across the street from my apartment.... going to have to see if I can't implement some of these strategies to avoid the junk.

I find dried or frozen fruit can kick many cravings. Mainly sweet, sour, chewy and crunch. Though i don't know if chewy/crunchy are necessarily cravings

To prove that convenience is a factor: I do not keep junk food around in my home, and if I’m hungry and snacky, the easiest to eat thing convenient in my fridge is fruit and pre cooked ground beef from a few days ago. Let me tell you the amount of times I felt lazy so I whipped open my fridge and started eating cold ground beef is crazy😂😂

If junk food is in eyesight and ready reach, I can't resist it. If it's nowhere to be found, I don't crave it. Laying off the junk food, for me, is a matter of making it a "moderate PITA" to consume.

Resisting cravings has probably been the single biggest challenge of being low carb for 20+ years. Through many, MANY, failures and lots of self recrimination I found something that appears to be common among all of my cravings: emotions. It doesn't matter what I am craving they always seem to have an emotional base. If I'm depressed I'll crave something. If I'm happy I'll crave something else. So instead of just resisting and actively "fighting" a craving I'll take a few minutes to think about how I am actually feeling and what triggered it to figure out WHY I am craving whatever it is that I am craving. Virtually every time I am actually craving the memory of something instead of that thing itself. Once I understand that I'm not actually craving a specific food but an emotional state the cravings go away. Perhaps I am just distracting myself long enough for the craving to pass but either way it works.

We shop, some items weekly and some biweekly, with a plan in mind; a few treats are allowed but mostly normal stuff. I understand well the frictionless access point. My son is about to graduate college (summa cum laude, if all goes well here at the end), and his first two years were at a tech school. It was just far enough away that if he had a lot of classes there was time for me to go home and return, but if it was only one, the commute was too long to justify going home... which meant I would often wait in a lounge area. That had a vending machine. I started bringing my own, healthier snacks because 1) the vending machine was too darn convenient and 2) I knew just sitting there and reading would end up making me hungry... so I would bring stuff like beef jerky in a small portion I could nibble over the hour and a half or two of waiting instead of gorging on chips and sweets. It got easier in his junior and senior years because the college he attends now is only a 15 minute drive from home 🙂 Drop off, pick up. No waiting in a lounge. Instead I can clear email and watch videos like this one 👍

I was 495lbs ate what my doctor told me and kept gaining weight, I was on the list for gastric bypass surgery because I couldn't lose weight. I promise you I ate what they told me and exercised and still couldn't lose more than 10lbs. I was very metabolically unhealthy. It wasn't until I went on an ultra-low carb diet that I got rid of all my cravings, dropped 295lbs and did it all without exercise because I could barely move at 495lbs and had severe back problems. Completely reversed my Type-2 diabetes and other health problems and went off all previous medications. Carbs are killing us in North America and they drive insulin spikes and glucose crashes which then creates hunger and cravings. Eliminate the carbs, go through the terrible headaches and feeling like crap and then prosper with 0 hunger and cravings will soon drop off with the weight. It works because you keep in a constant state of supressed glucose so there isn't spikes/crashes triggering the brain to trigger the hunger response and cravings for fat, salt and sugar which our brain is hard wired for.

Very good episode. Must admit, when I went onto intermittent fasting (8/16), so I have my last meal at lunchtime, I no longer 'snack' during the evening dvd. That's when I realised I hadn't been watching the dvds with any great deal of attention (let alone pay attention to how much food I was eating!) Now I'm no longer pigging myself on snacks or even thinking about the food cupboard, and watching scenes or paying attention to dialogue that I'd missed in films I'd owned for years. Only this morning I had been eating breakfast while watching a YT video, and then had to go back and rewatch it again because I hadn't been paying attention. Clearly, the actual of eating is both dimmed as an experience in itself and dims the experience of whatever else you are multitasking at, even if it is something as untaxing as watching a short video. So, the 3.5 rules are good - especially sit down and just eat if you need to eat. Get it done as a real and uninterrupted part of the day that needs it's own degree of concentration. Don't snack. You don't need it. The 'time to treat yourself' is a corporation lie. Your proper meals are treats. The ability to relax in the evening and watch TV, play a dvd, play an online game is a treat, all the treat you need in the evening.

Hey Johnny, I just found your KZbin page. Love the videos I've seen so far. Another aspect of cravings that you might be interested in is the gut bacteria. When we eat really healthy - lots of veggies and not much that is sugar or turns into sugar - we have good gut bacteria that don't crave the bad stuff. When we eat sugar, grains, etc. we have bad gut bacteria that keep the cravings coming. The bacteria actually control us along with the psychological factors. If you're interested in hearing more about it, put "Dr Gundry" and "cravings" in the KZbin search. I think you would really his videos. I can testify that this is true. When I'm on Dr Gundry's diet I don't crave sugar at all, but when I fall off it my cravings come back.

I totally get cravings, and when I engage with certain plants, I become a black hole. But I found that I can replace junk with fruit by just physically keeping it closer and more available to me. Doing that, I go for the healthy option almost every single time.

Ive always tried to turn my cravings towards positive things, apples n peanut butter, carrots, cucumbers, etc. but part of that is being raised on whole foods and garden grown stuff, i always had healthy snacks so my cravings naturally turn towards fruits and veggies over all else, sometimes sushi, sushi cravings are constant

When I drastically lowered my love for large amounts of carbohydrate foods , even whole carb foods my cravings for sugar snacks disappeared. Try it you will like it esp if you get cravings for snacks like crazy now. Also some folks want to believe cravings mean you NEED what you are craving and I have found if you forgo your cravings and have a protien food like meat or chees or tofu then you will feel super duoer great in the next 24 hr period.

As someone who over eats regularly I turned to calorie counting. I eat a balanced diet it's just a lot more than I need. It's not crazy weight loss results or anything but over the last 70 days I've dropped about 13 or 14 lb.

Well on carnivore I started to crave veggies. BAD. Lol. I always loved veggies anyways. I just have a sugar addiction I was trying for the umpteenth time to kick. I didnt last on carnivore not cuz of sugar but my body craved other real whole foods.

Junk food is bad for you and all but ‘high fat carnivore with garnishes’ is dangerous too. How can you meet your vitamin needs, or your fiber needs? And unless you’re bulking like crazy, that amount of protein is dangerous too, all the excess nitrogen has to be filtered through your kidneys and expelled. I’m not trying to rain on your parade or be rude or anything, but high fat carnivore is legitimately dangerous.

Every time I feel the urge to snack, I only allow myself to reach for cottage cheese, a fruit, or a spoonful of peanut butter. Eating out is too expensive and snacks from the grocery store are getting really pricey too. It saves so much money and keeps my weight down.

I am a spectacularly clumsy eater, so to save embarrassment, my default method for all meals is mono tasking eating and always sitting down at a table. I have never been able to eat (or sip) while driving or eat while sitting on a couch. It also makes drive thrus way less tempting!

YES! I agree with you about LMNT. When I first started using it 2-3 years ago it gave me more energy than coffee or Monster. I guess I didn't need caffeine as I needed salt and potassium. Who knew?!

Another home run of a video, No Lab Coat Required. When you mentioned the food cues, I was reminded of the instances where I could easily picture a food that I once had before and recall in fine detail how the food tasted and felt in my mouth. But I no longer get cravings once I've taken the time to "reproduce" the sensations in mind, like I'm able to satiate myself just through imagination. Mind you, this is coming from someone who is underweight and struggles to maintain a balanced and routine diet most days. I have somehow Pavlov-conditioned myself into ignoring my ghrelin response and regularly suffer from dizziness and low blood sugar. I have to rely on supplements to fill in for the deficiencies. Friendly reminder that while it sucks to fail a diet to cravings, it sucks even more to not have cravings at all. Please eat. I have to manually remind myself to do so.

Carb and sugar, cravings and addiction are real. I am 100% a carbon sugar addict. I have to treat it as if I was a drug addict. I have to literally have none. Because one piece of bread or one piece of candy throws me off the rails for weeks. It is terrible. And the problem is that this crap is absolutely everywhere.

I don’t know if it may help you, but I know that the book Ultra-Processed People is meant to be read whilst still having a diet of Ultra Processed Food, with the goal in mind of making you more mindful of the contents of said food in a way that gradually helps you *choose* better healthier options, from a mental standpoint, where hopefully the cravings will reduce the more you learn about UPF. I’ve only just started reading it, but I found that premise really interesting, and just having it in mind has been helping me to make better choices in a household chock-full of unhealthy snacks that I know I’d enjoy. I mention it in case there’s a chance it might help you too, since it sounds like this is a goal for you as well! If you’re not able to read it, the author has done a number of podcast interviews as well, which might help supplement some of that influence until you are able to read it, if you’re interested! Wishing you the best in your journey, wherever it leads you!

You might want to consider the effects of different macros on food cravings. It is easier to eat carbs even when you are not hungry than it is to eat protein and/or fat. All of your examples of excessive eating showed carb heavy food. There is never a necessity to eat carbs.

Regarding that Calorie comment, I would really love to see some studies of people who are eating 2500 "correct calories" and lose weight, while people who eat 2000 "bad calories" keep their weight/ gain weight cause everything I have read and everything I have experienced myself very much only correlated with calories when it comes to pure weight loss/gain.

My soda addiction is the hardest struggle since I don’t live alone, so it’s always in the house. But luckily most desserts are too sweet. And the ones I like I started making from scratch so then I also have to think about all the work/dishes I have to go through anytime I have a craving.

@@jennybenny7547 mostly because the evidence is self-reported, with a lot of opportunity for "reverse placebo", and there aren't studies on it that I've found. Additionally, I think large swaths of humanity consume a ton of seed oils (Asian cultures, sesame oil) and they do not see the issues that rich westerners are attributing to seed oils.

My achilles heel is corn chips. Just salted corn chips, no extra flavoring stuff required. I have a natural "shield" against most junk foods because I get migraines after eating the nuclear fallout radiation level of dye that's in most of these junk foods; migraines and/or nausea/vomiting/massive dehydration/ringing in my ears/shortness of breath/the runs. My favorite kind of chocolate is the 60~70%+ range and it prevents me from seeking out the "hypersugar" equivalent that is American Milk Chocolate. But plain corn chips, usually the ones that are made in-house, are the bane of my existence. I can taste "starchy" and I really like "starchy." I like crunch. I like that "grainy" feel when eating whole grain foods. A good corn chip that is salty, oily, starchy, crunchy as hell, _and_ has that grainy feel when chewing it is basically my kryptonite. I will power through an entire bag unconsciously so my rule of thumb is to prevent that from ever being present in my house.

I often forget to have healthier meat snacks (no sugar jerky) but a handful of peanuts or pistachios, or a nice scoop of sugar free peanut butter and something to drink makes a huge difference for me!

No contact can create a food dependency. Conflict and comfort. Food insecurity also. Basically the person's loss of food finances causes a mental hangup to eat more than normal.

Yep! And high fat high carb foods are extremely addictive because they’re extremely energy efficient, our brains are hardwired for calories and efficiency… if you gave an ancient human a McDonald’s burger they would be off the walls (and maybe die) but still. The gym helps me a lot, I don’t hate myself for eating those foods sometimes, I just have to USE the fuel I just put in, lol. Sometimes easier said than done.

The more I eat junk food the more I want junk food. After years of not eating as much junk food as I used to I can't really eat much junk food as I get a headache and get nauseas which only helps to fight any cravings. I'm no health nut and I just eat what reasonably sounds healthy and makes my body feel good after I eat it.

I am one of those weirdos who doesn't really do craving separately from hunger. I do eat hedonically though, since I sometimes need that tasty happiness and my balance stays in balance anyway. I am really fascinated by the fact that cortisol on its own can cause grehlin output. I am just comming down from my most acutely stressful week (dissertation deadline), and my hunger hasn't exactly been more, but absolutely irregular. Glad to have more than annecdotal evidence and a 'gut-feeling' to suggest it will go back to normal pattern once the stressors gone.

I thought I hated brownies until I started college because all the ones I had before were stale and probably made from a box mix (Grandma made too many and gave them to us instead of throwing them away). Then one of my professors brought some that were fresh, made from scratch and very fudgy and now I like them. I eventually got the recipe from him but it was pretty vague about the cocoa powder requirement: It called for “3 heaping spoonfuls” so I guessed tablespoons but it wasn’t nearly enough. Nowadays I mostly make keto sweets (often flourless because I like the texture better) and my favorite sweetener for baking is the granulated monk fruit from the Winco bulk bins, which measures cup for cup like sugar. I’m not fully keto but drastically reducing my carb intake has helped immensely. I’ve lost 60 pounds over the last couple years, which sounds slow but I’m just shy of 5’ and I’d rather have sustainable weight loss with plateaus than drastic weight loss followed by regain. Pizza is on thin ice because of elementary school hot lunch. There were 3 options every day for lunch, pizza was served 4 times a week and I was a picky kid. I probably had it about 3 times a week on average but I always chose mac and cheese or mashed potatoes if they were on the menu. I couldn’t eat pizza again until either sophomore or junior year and I still don’t want it more than once every 2 weeks minimum.

6:32 you know something weird I should probably remember and take advantage of in the future is that, if I am craving something that takes effort to obtain, I will go through that effort. Like I remember a few nights ago I just really wanted some mac and cheese, but we didnt have anything microwavable obviously, so I went and I boiled some water, put the pasta in, waited 12 minutes, the whole deal. I can just make food. If I dont have an easier option for the thing that I want.

For me calorie counting against a fixed calorie budget while making sure i get my meals on time really helped me to stay away from junk food. Just like with money, if I want something, but I can't afford it, I simply can't buy it, if I wanted to eat something, but I would've surpassed my calorie limit, I simply said I can't afford to eat that. So while I was trying to loose weight, it was incredibly easy for me to stay away, but now I'm trying to gain weight, I find it much harder to control myself, because I have a lot more calories available to eat. I can still get three healthy meals in, even if I consume some junk food snacks in between and it's not longer a "if you eat that, you'll have to skip dinner" type of situation. I would still much rather spend those calories on healthier snacks, but with more calories to spend, I often find myself giving in to junk food.
