So, a few considerations: On the nutrition side of things, keep in mind that this is a dry powder from fresh ingredients. Yes, destroying the cell membranes is a sort of a pre-digestion deal that will likely increase the bioavailability of nutrients that do not oxidize (consider garlic that is most nutritious eaten whole to minimize oxygen exposure). The method of drying will also make a difference; freeze drying is well established to protect many of the nutrients in a whole food. Pretty much any other form of drying is going to degrade the nutrient value. From what I can tell, AG1 is at least partially freeze dried; I could only find that the probiotics were freeze dried which leaves a suspicious omission, but check for yourself. That said, a more cost effective method of getting the same effect is to just buy the whole ingredients, blend them into a shake and what you don't drink immediately you seal in an airtight container and refrigerate to avoid degradation. Also like any supplement you should probably eat something with it to slow digestion and increase nutrient intake. Ideally something high in fiber to slow down digestion otherwise that liquid will shoot right through you. Regardless, take a moment and ask yourself if your diet is actually missing anything. Adding something packed with nutrients onto a complete diet really isn't going to do anything for you. Green juice is really for people that struggle to eat enough, or can't motivate themselves to eat the right foods. If you already have a healthy diet maybe save your money. Also wanted to throw in a +1 on the fasting. It's not for everyone and you have to be ready to pay close attention to your body (and probably talk to a doctor first) but it can be a fantastic experience. Note that may of the benefits, like full autophagy, don't kick in until around day 2. I don't go past 3 days, which seems to be widely regarded as the safe limit for most people. You do you, but understand if you reach a hunger panic (you'll know it when you feel it) it's time to end the fast. And start with a simple soup (make some in advance in case you need to end the fast), slowly add solids back and make sure you're reintroducing magnesium early on. There is a potentially dangerous condition called refeeding syndrome that can occur if you eat too much too quickly. I've never gone that far, but a couple times a craving for rice has made for some very unpleasant spikes in blood sugar. A green juice, presuming it absorbs as well as advertised, would be a great pre-fast food supplement. Taking a couple days to lower intake and supplement with a high nutrient beverage will almost certainly help your fast go more smoothly. You're basically forcing your body to run through its reserves, so having a large stockpile is ideal. That said, as noted above, if there's nothing solid in your system a juice is likely going to pass right through you with minimal absorption so drinking it during a fast won't just break a true fast, but it's also not going to be absorbed super efficiently even with your body's desperation for nutrients. All around not a great idea.

Green juice used as a basic nutrient supplement, can produce energy for us that we need in order to work out and thus lose weight. That's about it. I lost 50 pounds using AG1, because it filled in the gaps on my nutrient deficiency. It didn't provide me anything more than a low-calorie food source. Detox is a stupid word, period. I loved that pause after the two eggs gag. Once again, great editing. Phenomenal use of light background music. You've got great work here man, I hope you have over a million subs soon.

One of the big problems in assessing whether these make you feel good is that there is the placebo effect. You think it's going to make you feel good therefore it makes you feel good. And yes this is a real scientific phenomenon, not just with green juice but with a lot of things.

This dude knows what he is talking about. I am so happy his channel turned up in my feed a few months ago. I studied nutrition/chemistry many years ago and what he says makes perfect sense to me. The key thing deciding what to put in my body especially in terms vitamin/mineral supplement is bioavailability. If I don't know I look it up. You would be surprised at the number of ingredients in supplements that are not bioavailable. Also taking 200+% of the RDA of a vitamin/mineral is crazy. You are just going to pee it out provided it is water soluble. That is why your pee in intense yellow.

I remember 3 years ago I got diagnosed type 2 diabetes, my A1C was 7.2, doctors said I'm young (29 at the time) so we can turn this around. I binged on health topics and did a month of paleo plus intermittent fasting (eating between noon and 8 all my calories) and got that A1C to 5.6 in 30 days. Even lost 30 pounds of pure fat (I was weighted on those machines with anodes to tell body composition). I use to do green smoothies to replace meals all the time but is time consuming, can't wait try give Huel a try for that. Thanks a bunch man!

While it was whole food it was just defaulted to not varied enough to get everything I needed. It got me through that cycle and I started introducing more varied whole foods again so I feel like it's mostly overkill at this point so im done wasting my money on it anymore. Good video. I wish there was more of a focus on how useful the nutritional profile of these drinks are though. What kinds of diets would benefit from supplementation of these nutrients? What kinds of diets wouldn't benefit much at all? What meals might cover all of the nutrients offered by these drinks? I believe this is one claim that all brands imply (we give you nutrient powder and you need this powder -> therefore you are nutritionally deficient) but this question was barely addressed
@NoLabCoatRequired
@NoLabCoatRequired 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for comment! You can almost consider green juices as a multi-vitamin. In fact, one or the other is ideal, both would be unnecessary. Diet wise, the best start will always be whole foods, full stop. A green juice powder drink isn't coming with anything special that you can't find outside of a whole foods diet, whether keto, carnivore, vegan, etc... to answer your question, I hinted at eggs being rich in a variety of vitamins, say for example you consume some eggs and a meal with dark leafy greens in one day; you'd already be checking off quite a few nutritional boxes. Not to mention as a last point, vitamins remain in the body for longer than we think and we (especially in America and similarly developed countries) are hardly ever deficient to the point of an ailment. Green juices and multi-vitamins are for those that want to ensure they're getting what they need, however, they're likely not deficient.

This is such an important point that is so often missed. Same thing can happen if other nutrients aren’t present with it, like D3 and calcium and fat. Or Vitamin C and iron. Nutrients need to be in combination with others to be properly utilized. Which is where research comes in because most companies will sell you this stuff as a low calorie food when it needs fats or proteins to work which will up the calories. So insidious.

Nice breakdown. For me, the main question though, is if they actually offer anything significantly better than standard vitamin supplements. The reason I think this is a big deal is because AG1 and Organifi (haven't looked at Huel) are incredibly expensive. It sounds like their most likely actual benefit is to act as a micronutrient supplement if you are deficient, but again, there are all kinds of vitamin supplements out there already, that cost quite a bit less, so again, are these so much better that it justifies the extra cost.

Me, being semi skeptical but also drinking a smoothie with Huel while I watch this. It was on sale and I thought Why Not? The perks have to be somewhat there. Oh - would you be willing to breakdown non-fat dairy items? My mom still subscribes to it from the 90s.

When you talked about "cleansing", there is one thing probably more important than fasting to "clean out" your body: fibre. Your gut needs fibre to be able to push out its waste. If you suddenly increase your fibre consumption too fast, you may get a quite sudden demonstration of the words "clean out" 8-24h later 😅 Additionally, fibre is also one of the things that makes a person feel full, making them less likely to overeat. So fibre genuinely does help with weight loss too! And those are some of the big reasons why fruits, veggies, and whole grains are so healthy for you!

A rule I have is not to buy supplements with claims of "supporting" this or that. The word "support" in this situation doesn't mean it does anything. Things that support good health: * Breathing * Eating * Eliminating * Sleeping * Physical Activity Do you really need an expensive supplement then?

I love green juices and smoothies to aid digestion, but I’ve never tried the powders. I think they are probably healthy, but maybe not worth the price compared to just buying some frozen kale and spinach and blending it up with a couple fruits.

Something thats coming to light lately is the idea that some food products are "pre-digested" in that they are brokrn down into powders or slurries and made into things like this or formed into things like chips and bars. So they body doesnt Work as hard to digest and doesn't use energy to digest (which os a bit of a bad thing sometimes) so its just more calories in a person, when the average person isn't as active as they should be already.

Cooking is the most popular way of liberating nutrients from the food matrix, followed by fermentation. Certain forms of cooking both liberate and destroy some nutrients, while others may remove nutrients from the solid food and place it in the surrounding liquid. Pressure cooking for long periods of time is the most-accessible (and often optimal) way to liberate and keep as much nutrition as possible. It allows bones and tough parts of plants to be eaten at all, while also making the nutrients more bioavailable from the usually-eaten parts. PS: A lot of "processed food" exists because of it being a way to liberate nutrients from the food matrix and thus get more energy per pound of raw material to the end consumer. Most forms of this happen to be aiming for raw calories, as the specific inventions derive from roughly the 100 year span of 19th century thru the 1960s when large portions of the population struggled to get enough to eat in the US, Europe, and East Asia. Corn Flakes, Wonder Bread and Instant Ramen are forms of this. "Easy to digest" was an old tagline for foods like this.

The way to use it for weight loss would be as a meal replacement. Mix in some whey protein, and it's a low calorie, high nutrient meal.

Bioavailability: The fraction of a consumed nutrient/drug that is absorbed into the blood AND not immediately broken down by the liver, such that it can actually have an effect on the organism. Absorption and breakdown can be influenced through other substances. The whole thing about whether active substances are trapped within plant cells, coupled to some other molecule, whether they're readily water soluble or not, etc., has the formal term of "liberation" in pharmaceutical literature. How to prepare a compound that has good liberation and resorption is a question of galenic formulation.

I think a lot of people just expect miracles from supplements but don’t change their diet at all. Adding this to a standard American diet will likely net very little benefit because they’re already consuming too many foods that impact them negatively. I think the only way to see if these powders do anything to have someone on a consistent diet for 30 days, do blood tests, add the powder while maintaining the same diet over another 30 days and doing more blood work at the end. I honestly think it would be a negligible impact if a test like that was ran and the individual had a decent diet prior to that. Great video! I’d like to see a video about the effects of a carnivore diet. It’s been working great for myself over the last few months.

Do you have a video on fasting? I'm doing a liquid fast right now trying to improve things in my body and lose some weight to boot. I find myself thinking "what's the right number of days to continue this fast? If I only do it for two days, will there be any benefits? etc. When I was young I bought into the whole green juice fast thing, not powders, but running kale through a nice juicer. All of my information on that was not nearly as scientific as I'd like. There's another video idea, old-school green juice.

Another thing green juice products get wrong is that kale MUST be cooked to reduce the harm it WILL inflict on your thyroid. Adding kelp powder or maybe something like spirulina or chlorella can counter balance the kale's effects on the thyroid.
