I don't get this 9 ft rule. I've seen loads of metal objects closer than that to overhead lines.
@FishbedMyBeloved5 жыл бұрын
Yes, because they have a special path for the current (the trains have pantographs) and the main part wont be electrified
@megandunnett79003 жыл бұрын
Which sort of overhead lines? The ones over train tracks, domestic supply, or industrial supply. Here in Aus we have all three in certain places (not on the same service though, the rail is kept seperate so it can just run the network). When it comes to train overheads, the pantograph provides the energy path to the motor/batteries but it is mounted on four insulators. There are some other slightly complicated processes in place involved that don’t really need to be explained right now even if it is potentially fascinating. The carriage and the _closed/Retracted_ pantograph is at the highest point (shortest distance between train and powerlines) you can get before arcing occurs. That being said, those lines generally transmit around 25kV (25000 Volts) and are prone to arcing. Electricity , like water, will always chose the path of least resistance, which in most scenarios is you, especially if you’re standing up. That amount of energy would use you as the conductor and ground to the train carriage/engine you were standing upon. You wouldn’t stand a chance. That is why there is the 9ft rule and why a lot of Aussie schools in the 90’s/early 2000’s had safety campaigns about not climbing onto the roofs of trains along with their general rail safety messages like don’t walk on the tracks. And also why there’s been a spate of deaths in India after they went electric.
