Having worked at half a dozen or so pro audio companies as well as studios and also been a private studio owner I can seriously say this is one of the clearest examples of thinking I've heard in a while in pro audio. Like many in this industry I just go with the "vibe" of the product and its people and some companies have it and some don't.

I thought the reviews were interesting, and it did put me off a purchase. However, I am still interested in seeing if they do come out with a pro version. People can have differing opinions, but not at the expense of getting abusive.

I was hoping Zoom would finally fix the one big issue: Self Noise. Why do i need to pay 2-3X and get a 1000€+ recorder with a gazillion channels when all i need is 2 XLR, the port layout for a sound bag and good preamps?? They could make Sound Devices real competition in the prosumer / KZbinr market, but choose to just sell you an inferior product for a few percent less than even sound devices. You are right on the money (pun intended) to call Zoom out for their lazyness. They once brought innovation in features AND price, and now lay back and ride on their decades old successes and brand recognition. Maybe Rode will enter the market, or Tascam will step up (finally). Maybe. Zoom can keep a new "Pro" Series if they are not aggressive enough on price and features. Being a few bucks cheaper than a true industry leader like Sound Devices is no value proposition.

Wait friend. What about the F2 or F3? I think the 3 is like $300 and it's got F guts obviously as it's an F but can't comment on ahim how good they truely are. Ahim to be fair I really can't hard say yes or no on quite a few of these Zooms as I've not heard them with an NT1-A mic. See my blind friend Neal Ewers when he did his reviews would always use Sound Devices 744-T a 4 thousand $ recorder with the NT1-A for quietness. Then in this case how does the new esental series hold up to that? Well I know kind of the answer. Ahim as well as the original h6 did and as well as either the original H4N or H4N Pro. That 1 depends. If the new 1 is like the pro then meh that's ppretty good. Not mixer desk perfect mind but come on man. The oligarchs aren't going to give you mixer desk guts in a cheep to them recorder. I think this is the mistake people make. Thus all the shade.

Rode I have to say were exemplary when it came to tech help with their wireless go ii... Perhaps they are the exception to the rule.

I’ve been fending off DJI fanboys when I said I would probably pass (or at least delay) upgrading to the wireless mic 2. There are some critiques I had, which doesn’t mean I think the mic was bad. The H1e arrives today. I will do my own tests against the old tried and true H1n.

I waited for your Zoom H6 "replacement" review to come out. I am so glad I waited. Here's what's up. I love my Zoom H6. The one thing it REALLY needs, though is 32 bit float. I recorded my friend's band and went in the distance to get the stereo amplifier blend for my recording, and yes, PA speaker systems are not friendly to hand recorders. But if I just get the volume low, I can do okay for now. I hope a new Pro series not only provides the better screen, but I hope I get a better XY stereo mic capsule and pray tell, a noise floor that is better than 120 as you keep saying. As for loyalty, that's earned, right? Well Mr. 5 or 6 videos this week and content loaded with integrity, it's a pleasure subscribing to you, thanks so much.

I got the h1 essential. In my experience the h1n is still better because it has the gain. The h1 essential is a pain to use and the hissing sound is bad.

Really thought you gave some really valuable information with the essentials series. I was about to buy one for a film I'm making and now I'm reconsidering. But I want to ask, if I mount an H1e to my camera rig and use a wireless lav mic, would that get rid of some of the problems you stated? I alreayd have a wireless lav on my and the 32 bit float like you said is a super helpful feature, ESPECIALLY with filming interviews for a documentary.

I'm sure there's a difficult to surmount technical reason for it, but I find it inexcusable that it seems (nearly) impossible to find a recorder that doesn't have hiss with its pre-amps. I always thought that one of the major advantages of a proper digital recorder over good old fashioned analog audio tape was the ability to totally eliminate tape hiss, yet it's 2024 and here we are.

I don’t really care about the EIN -120 or whatever, but every Zoom I’ve ever owned has had horrible handling noise. I haven’t tried any other brands so maybe this is just normal for these handheld recorders.

I am surprised how people were so loyal about Zoom to begin with. Zoom was popular because of the handheld + very cost effective part but never because their products were super good. Even Zoom would acknowledge that they aren't in the same league as many other (handheld) recorders. I love them and I still keep my trust H4. But to go out on salty rants in the comments? Nah.

Same thing should go for reviewers i remember watching harris heller review the ne logitech yeti. I heard the thing sound so bad in his video and he recommended it. how are you going to recommend a mic that sounds worse tgan the original they're trying to replace. This is why watching multiple reviews is a must just like not blindly trusting one company

Hay friend. What DAW do you use? Can you try the H6 E with Reaper if you have a spare PC please? Last check even the newest Reaper doesn't see my 2018 H6 that with Zoom's pair of ASIO drivers they haven't updated since ahim when they ever last did. If you tell me not seen then oh boy. That's another reason to wait or what ever.

Ah I see. Yeah the H8 was seen by reaper. Now with the H6 Reaper before 6 it use to see it. But when 6 came out it would only see it in stereo mix mode. Now though since I tried it last week it sees it in no mode. The only problem with the H8's ASIO is that it's 1 driver for boath modes. The problem here is that this ASIO doesn't burp out the Dell gimic audio. So you don't get good audio out.@@DarkCornerStudios

The only comment I have is when you fairly say this is not good enough you should still say what is better. Like many I have a range of recorders and H1N as small standby. 32 bit would be a big help. You tell me what's good and what's bad but I have no idea how this compares to the H1n. I also have no clue what I should consider instead.

@@DarkCornerStudios That's the issue. I have the Tascam X8 but for even their DR05 or 07 are significantly bigger than the H1 and don't have a 32bit float. If it's the only one in a category it's simultaneously the best and worst.

@@DarkCornerStudios Yes but whilst it's smaller than the X8, I think it's a competitor to the H4 or H6. It's bigger than the DR05 and 07 and way bigger than H1n or H1 essential, which is the category that has the void.

Did I miss the shade comments? I did see a lot of Zoom are trash comments. But I don't recall 1s bashing you. I think people also need to lower their expectations. I see a lot of comments where it seems those people making them should just save the money and at least buy an F6. Zoom ain't gonna put F guts in a $299 thing, Much less the H1 a $199 thing. We can debate weather moraly ethically humanly they should but come on people greed is what drives oligarchs.

When an Olympus voice recorder at a similar price point gives MUCH better results with external mics and has better build quality you know there is something not good enough with Zoom.

Wait which Olympus are you comparing with? I've used Olympusas they have since 2007 had talking menus. But have given up on them as they've gone mini me and have a mini me sound. Their problem is they kill all their epic products. DM 2 and 4 with a builtin screen reader. Killed off. LS-100 with XLRs and mostly talking menus killed. Like come on Olympus oligarchs. @@doubledeckers

I feel this Essential line main purpose is to place the future Pro products at a higher place, but let’s see.
