actually the reason why i believe he did that was because if he wrote his name on her hand, she would’ve just forgotten it anyway. because i also think that at the very end she forgot that he even saved her after all and like doesn’t remember anything to do with him. so instead of taki writing his name, he wrote “i love you” because mitsuha would remember that feeling and that memory of someone saying that they loved her. she would remember the feeling of love. and so she would always be looking for the person who said they loved her. at least that’s how i see it.

One amazing thing that Shinkai put on a lot of work to build up to this scene, was that the main characters talked and had conversation with their hands at the very beginning and the conversation was more of who you are and who I am. Taki wrote I love you because he thought, that they now know each other enough and only the words that will not be known without being said, is their feeling.
In Japanese, "I love you" can be expressed as follows. すき すきだ すきです 好きなの 好き 好きだ 好きです 好きなの 愛してる 愛してます All have slightly different nuances, but "すきだ" was used in the play. This is used when a boy expresses his feelings for a girl in a slightly rough manner.

This was actually a smart move despite it being a bit of tear jerker moment, simple reason all traces of names disappear but "I love you" was to generic to be deleted by the strands and time parting, in my personal opinion I think he wrote that deliberately knowing there was the risk his name would be forgotten by her with no trace.
@rachelfox8108 Жыл бұрын
Exactly: even when he'd forgotten her name before, his love for her had already brought him there. He knew it couldn't be erased when they parted again because it never was.

Though Taki wrote it in a fluke or giving it a deeper thought, but it was probably the bestest move he could have ever play, literally it was The God Tier move! Cause Mitsuha there was at her limit and gave up, so she (with this last few minutes left) thought she at least should die after knowing his name, that's why she looks at her thumb, she saw this and was like "No! No way I am not seeing you again after knowing this!", this feeling poured a divine energy(metaphor) into her and her whole body and mind stood up on its own. The move won't just stops here it goes much much deeper. Now you will know the reason for calling this move "The God Tier move". Remember, other than their feelings, their texts, connected stuffs, even their memories of each other, mostly everything that connects them getting disappeared?? It was because of their different timelines. The space-time continuum couldn't allowed it. So if IT was his name, chances were it getting disappeared as well. But more than words, "I Love You" is a love expression, which is why Time and Space's grasp over it was loosed. This is why The God/Goddess of Moon/Love was able to hold Time and Space to not remove these three words. [The words are under Time Space continuum, but the emotions in it aren't. Cause of that the god/love could interfare in the Time-Space business] *Truly "The God Tier" move, isn't it?* This movie is literally saying the whole time True Love can't be walled or stopped, it doesn't obay boundaries or laws. The most powerful force in us is our "Memories", The most powerful force in the Existence is "Time and Space", if even these unwavering forces are up against our True Love, chances are they will/have to weaver too. Yes it's Exaggerated. But that's not the point. The point is to tell you not to call it love if you gonna broke off or dump the other person some times after for some stupid-a** reasons. That's no love but your lilibo having a ride.

Some people say why Taki didn't write his name, if he only did they would remember immediately one another. However, that's the point, the reason that they are longing for something, and it felt something was missing even after the events. Both of them knew that someone was loving them. They just didn't know their names. And maybe because of writing 'I love you' it had a longer impact on them than just writing their names.
