Wool blankets, In 1973 I was in Western Queensland and got caught up in the huge floods of that year . was caught between 2 rivers and the water came up over the road and eventually over the car. Scrambled to a sand hill wet and in torrential rain, wrapped in the x army blanket for 4 days, fire on 5 the day. Snared rabbits, cooked in the coals, drank flood water ( no pot) rescued on the 9 the day. Still have that blanket, saved my life. All the best. Bluey.

To dry socks, an old buddy of mine swore by using a steel bottle... He'd stick water in, heat it over a fire, put the lid on and then pull a sock on the bottom and the other sock over the top. He'd use it like that as a hot water bottle and a sock drier by putting it between bag and bivvi sack. I think it just added moisture to his bag and bivvi, but it made him happy. 🤣

When choosing a commode container it's recommended you choose a size large enough to hold all beers consumed. Military surplus used camel back bladders can be purchased cheap. I have used the wool blanket and oil cloth for historical reenacting but like my Military surplus sleep system for most times but my favorite sleep equipment is a large home made quilt and half buffalo hide that kept me warm at -40f.

Great vid Tilly - I mean Nick ha ha - I still use the old Nato roll mat - simple classic, tough as an old DMS and never punctures. I have always sworn by zinc oxide tape to prevent blisters. I see so many vids on hiking etc. and blisters seem to be 'expected'. Very few use or recommend taping hot spots/heels as a preventative measure. Compeed seems to be the go to remedy but rarely stays put if wet and by then the damage is done. I was more of an doss bag armpit man for drying socks but lets not go there! So very useful that you discuss the 'need to pee' topic. I once had to venture out of my Canadian artic bag at minus 20 for a number 2. It's no joke. The early signs of frostbite taught me to forever more, plan ahead.
@bushcraftbasics20363 жыл бұрын
Great Q&A. If you need to go pee in the middle of the night and it is cold other alternatives are: - Condoms, although I have not tried this I was taught it was a fairly common thing in the Canadian arctic by soldiers. Once filled it would be tied off and placed outside where it would freeze. The advice was not to eat the "arctic turnips". - have a pair of easy to put insulated slippers or hut booties you can toss on to make it easier to go without having to put on the heavy winter boots (which might have to be assembled if you took the liners out to dry) - those wide mouth collapsible bottles so it does not take up room in the pack that should be harder to mix up with your lemonade bottle.

Nick in regards to that ridgeline the thicker diameter rope you use is very good and handy sometimes you need to lower your pack down or something of that sort I do it all the time in my area I even have a climbing harness with me it must be from my arborist experience better to lower yourself down ,Than to butt scoot down a hill and get hurt .

Everything about that was fascinating. But - as a miser - it was the advice on peeing in the extreme cold that caught my eye. "That's another month I won't have to put the central heating on during the night," I thought. I think I'm turning into my father, who was convinced the only central heating a true Briton needed was the Gulf Stream.

Hi Nick good video and some useful points, I had a chuckle at you comments about acrobatic manoeuvres in your green maggot (sleeping bag) also bought back memories when you mentioned fabric bottles in your old life. I used to use an old surplus water bottle marked "Not for drinking" 😂just in case which was emptied fairly regularly and cleaned thoroughly at the end of the op. My wife asked about how would ladies do the same action? On a separate note talking about wool blankets I have used a thin wool/polyester blanket inside a sleeping bag when in Canada on exercise in the winter stayed extra cosy.

Great G+A. As for the bathroom in the middle of the night I have found that a two pint plastic milk bottle is best. Although you may not need that much volume remember that it will be laying on it`s side. Trust me there is nothing worse than having to stop, mid flow when you just can`t. You can squash the empty bottle down a fair bit for packing in your kit. Your not likely to mistake it for a water bottle, but most importantly the opening is offset and that helps greatly with the acrobatics in the sleeping bag. John J

Thanks for answering viewers questions, I'll be sure to use your sock tips. Oddly, once you get the weight down, you can often add back more gear but you are doing so with a better understanding that if it does the same job, take the lighter option.

Great Video Nick. Love these Q & A ones. Ref pee in the night. I’m aged 57 and have T2 diabetes, so when wild camping it’s very regular,so I how have collapsible 1 litre plastic camping bottles which are especially made for peeing in. Which one can buy on Amazon Etc. talking of which ,it brought up memories of my past in the Army in the 1980’s. I was based in XMG in N.I ,and did regular 24/48 hr observation OP’s in the countryside ,at suspected IRA and activity.There was no fancy gadgets back then for pee/crap, and we could not use the countryside in case we got compromised by our movement,smells,freshly dug areas ,and those bloody inquisitive cows ! So we use to carry spare water bottles to pee in and plastic shopping bags for 💩. Then we had to store them in our bergen until we got back to XMG. I can laugh now,but having a crap near your mucker in a shell scrape is odd to say the least 😂. Then sometimes I was that tired I drank from the wrong water bottle 😂. God forbid if either of us had wInd as well 😂. What was worse is that we couldn’t laugh or make any noise . Anyhow,enough of pee and 💩 stories .lol ..Listening to you brought back many funny stories like that. So thanks..

The last question is very interesting. I was a long haul driver. Some if the places I wound up there would be no place to go pee. I used to carry a milk jug in the truck and go in there. Because if i get out of bed in the middle of the night and have to walk into a place, I'm awake for hours. This not good if you have a 12 hour day ahead of you. I don't drive any more, but I still have to get up and go every 2 to 3 hours, depending on how much coffee or Rum I drink. Being it's late November here in Canada it's cold at night and getting out of that warm bed isnt fun.

Wrap it in a bag used just for that purpose. When it gets to sooty wash it and start the cycle over. I take old plant legs, cut off the length needed, use sticky sided Velcro tabs to close it. Cheap, easy, doesn't matter if I ruin them, and they work great. I forgot to mention earlier, I always make the pant legs a little long and I make them out of jeans which is 100% cotton so I have ready made char material when needed.

I could go on ALL DAY about why I feel that the “cotton kills” mantra is both overhyped and oversimplified. But that long lecture would merit its own video . . . and this isn’t my channel. So let me just say two things: 1) There really isn’t any money in it for sporting-goods and outdoor retailers to sell cotton or cotton/poly clothing, when it can easily picked up elsewhere by consumers. Meanwhile, the elaborate new synthetics and wool weaves surely off greater markups and profit margins, even if they work. 2) I have autism (the kind that used to be called Asperger’s Syndrome), and with it, sensory issues. I’ve always gravitated towards cotton/poly clothing, in particular as a base layer, finding that it has all of the advantages of cotton with fewer or none of its failings. Indeed, it may often be the only thing I can stand to wear: while 100% cotton is sometimes a bit stiff, synthetics feel like wearing a sheet of itchy plastic, and I wouldn’t dream of wool t-shirts or underpants in the Texas heat! And since I know that military forces still make use of cotton/poly underlayers, that’s what I’m happily wearing!
