How do you land a jet if not able to see the landing? Couple years back our flight. Put was going around the whole airport. After maybe 15 minutes we were able to takeoff. At our destination we couldnt land because we were in a cloud. Finally we landed, ran down to the street area and it was raining heavily. Do you land only visually?

Thank you Greg for the reply. I recently saw the video made by an experienced pilot who spent some years looking into the death of JFK Jr and all on board his small plane headed for Martha Vineyard but ended up in the Atlantic Ocean. The fuel in the wings of his small plane did add to his confusion of circumstances during his night flight and gradually headed him eastward into the Atlantic Ocean where his plane subsequently went nose-first into the Atlantic at over 200 NMPH. I really can see how helpful it is to have an experienced pilot in the right seat. It always amazes me hour you can memorize all the info from the various controllers and pretty much never make a mistake along with all the other things you have to do in speak, altitude, and navigation. You truly are an expert pilot so mindful of the smallest detail even how well you speak on the radio from a professional level. Thanx Greg looking forward to our next flight

This video brought back a lot of good memories. I was born in Madison, and lived in Monona. As a child my grandfather would take me to the airport there in Madison to watch the plans take off and land. Which I enjoyed greatly. My cousin was Brig. Gen. William ( Billy ) Mitchell, and we often drove to Milwaukee to Mitchell Field. Aviation runs in both sides of the Family. Dad is cousins to the Wright brothers. My Mother is cousins with Billy Mitchell. LOL, One side invents the plan, the other side shows everyone how to fly them. Yet I never learned how to fly, but I love it still the same.

It's harder than it sounds. :-) ATC: Two Zero Mike, descend and maintain Five Thousand Me: Down to Five Thousand, for Two Zero Mike The trouble is that could be ambiguous. 25,000 or to 5,000? Hi Greg, I'm now 80 and loving these videos. About 50 years ago I owned a Comanche and flew out of Schaumburg. Flew to Weir-Cook several times. Got my instrument rating and flew 12 hours more and sold the plane. I realized I did not have the time or money to stick with it. Wish now I had.... I have a question. During the video you explained your ground speed in knots. I converted to MPH and it was 494.5. The GoPro showed 472. More curious than anything, why the difference? Wondering if I missed something. Thanks....
@FelipeBR7774 жыл бұрын
Hello Mr. Dennis! How are you, sir? That’s a GoPro error. At minute 14:54 you can see that the GoPro is already showing 472MPH, and right after, at minute 14:57, you can see on the multi function display a ground speed of 347 knots, or 399MPH. I don’t know if you already found an answer for your question; if not, I hope I have cleared it out for you. Kind regards from Brazil!
@discerningmind4 жыл бұрын
I've always found MPH in car GPS to be off a little. Perhaps it's the same with an aircraft but wider margins of error given the higher speeds.

I'll echo everyone's sentiments here Greg, thanks for spending your time and effort on P1D, I enjoy each new one and go back over favorites frequently. Much appreciated. I have one question, a trivial one: In your airplane and flying on autopilot, if for some reason you want to initiate a heading change greater than 180 degrees, can the autopilot do that or will it always default to the acute option? In other words, if your present heading is 360deg and you want to change heading to 170deg with a left turn, can the autopilot be commanded to do that? Hope that's not too abstruse, and thanks again.
@emrebaskocak4 жыл бұрын
I believe in most planes if you want a turn greater than 180 degrees you need to turn the bug in the direction you wish to turn a few degrees, then as the turn progresses turn it to the exact heading you want to turn to. Otherwise the autopilot will make the less than 180 degree turn. To give an example, say you're flying a heading of 360 and want a left hand turn to 170, so the long way around. You set your heading bug to 270 first, and as the turn progresses set it to 170. This way you initiate a right hand turn, then end the turn at 170 (the desired heading). If in this case you were to set 170 without the intermediate step, your plane will make the shorter right hand turn. Again I don't know how it works in his plane with his avionics but many planes (such as a King Air) does it this way. Hope it helps.

do you start your cameras and leave them running the whole time or do you start and stop some of them? The reason I ask is I have that same GoPro 5 session and the battery lifeisn't as great as some of the newer ones so I start and stop at frequently. This of course complicates editing.

When you walked back to show the head and said "here it lives" for a second I thought you were referring to the waste basket you picked up. Hahaha. Your vids have the most balanced audio levels of any flight channels. Much appreciated. Of course as I type this I'm hearing a slight echo.

Yeah it got away from me a bit at the end. I'm not sure what is going on. I fixed some of it, but it varied throughout.

@@gregmink Sounded to me like you had a second audio channel enabled. It was the worst when you were on the ground I figured it was the ambient audio from inside the cockpit which is probably normally drowned out by your engines and wind noise.

I don't like this style of pocket door for bathrooms. Either make it close on the opposite side (so the crack in the door doesn't reveal the toilet) or slide the door a few inches into the pocket, so there is no crack. Nobody wants to see a person on the toilet through that crack. Gross. Gonna need a loud ass fan so we don't have to hear you poop, too.

Lived near KMSN for years. Very rare for a rwy 3 approach/landing. Usually 18/36 and landing on 21. Really neat you got to see the whole city. Did an intro flight from 21 there with 25 kt crosswinds. Madison is a great city to fly above.

Been following. Dad's family had 4 brothers all flew. Dad had an Aeronca Champ, Aeronca Sedan, and a Cessna 150. Uncle started on a DC7 United. Not sure if it was a 707 or DC-8 he graduated to. Finally made Captain on a 737. Retired now. Thanks for the very informative videos.

Greg, thank you for the videos. I enjoy your channel and haven't commented in a couple of years but now I feel it's time to remind your viewers to please use standard phraseology over the radio. As a commercial/instrument/aircraft owner with 3,000 hours based nearby at KUMP I've certainly had my share of mistakes when communicating. I don't want to be "that guy" who points out the least little thing like "lookin' for runway 3" or whatever (thanks for not editing out your mistakes as a public service). What I do recommend is consistent, concise, disciplined phraseology whenever keying the mic as the rule, not the exception. Controllers are required to use standard phrases and I so appreciate how much easier it makes my job in the cockpit. I feel we owe them the same courtesy and professionalism. It's easy for anyone to develop bad habits over time, even former military and corporate jet drivers, so here's the skinny: 1. Headings: say "heading one-two-zero" not "one-twenty." The key word is "heading" followed by three single digits. That way everyone knows you're communicating an assigned heading and not an altitude, frequency or squawk. They do it. We should do it. 2. Altitudes: say "niner-thousand six hundred climbing flight level two-three-zero" not nine-point-six up to two-three-zero." The keyword "point" is reserved for frequencies and is never used when reporting altitudes. Other phrases like "climb and maintain" or "descend and maintain" are preferred over phrases like "up to" or "down to" (the "to" is confused with "two" as well). Always give altitude when checking in with a new controller so they don't have to ask you to confirm your altitude, especially over a busy airspace like Chicago. Again, they do it, we should do it. 3. Frequencies: say "one-two-four point two-five" not "twenty-four twenty-five." The keyword "point" is always used to report frequencies in the USA. Many other countries use the keyword "decimal" instead. 4. Transponder: say "squawk two-three-four-five" not "twenty-three forty-five in the box" or whatever. The keyword is "squawk" always followed by four single digits. And every time I hear someone say "with you" when checking in (and you don't do this) I want to cringe. Just give them your full callsign and altitude along with any other concise information needed for the next phase of flight. I get the idea behind reading back clearances this way. It seems airline pilot cool or maybe you're just wanting to say things in a different way so they know you understand and are experienced. You didn't ask for my advice but your video is titled, "Your Questions Answered." So here's my question for you, Greg: "What kind of example would you like to set for the many pilots watching your videos?" I'm sure you won't want to fly with me after my remarks but just know I'd love to. Thanks so much and happy flying!

Greg your video's are very well rounded and insightful from many different perspectives.
