Just an additional fact - If Rooney had taken every penalty he had been on the pitch for that England had received, he would have 61 goals for England (assuming he scored them). If the same treatment was given to Kane he'd be on 50 goals already for England. Obviously, Kane looks like he's going to pass 61 goals for England with ease too anyway (I'd be surprised if he doesn't reach 70) and has always been a much more reliable goalscorer for England. I just thought it was an interesting nuance.

His best position was so on the left of a front three or playing in the hole behind a striker, not as an out and out striker. He tended to lack the discipline playing down the middle and was often criticised for drifting out wide or generally chasing the ball. The fact he was banging goals in from such a young age and that he did it for so many years puts him right up there, but he only scored more than 20 league goals in a season twice throughout his career. Not that I'm trying to take anything away from him because he was a devastating player. It just that there seems to be a misconception that playing him in midfield was playing him out of position, but in fact the opposite is true and having him lead the line wasn't his best position at all.
