Exactly. Just like EVs - yeah, sales are terrible because people are getting hammered by inflation and worry their co will start laying off. The only reason many of us still aren’t getting ‘the call’ from Rolex is because there are still a LOT of wealthy people who can pay $6-12k for a new watch.

Overpriced watches prices are back to normal. Good, substantial brands like IWC, Omega, Breitling, etc. are not experiencing notable depreciation. Cheaply made hyped ones like the Ming will tank. I think it makes sense. Pieces of substance will always keep their value.

Not so sure if Ming is cheaply made, the ones I handled were very well made. As for IWC being stable, I just bought a like new 2023 Mark XX on the bracelet in a full set 35% under retail. Which is what I would call “normal” for a pre-owned watch. Walking out of the boutique is at least 15% - 20% drop, wearing it, another 15% - the way it is for non-waitlist models. Breitling watches totally tank pre-owned (compared to list price) unless you buy smart with a substantial discount.

Very interesting and nice to meet you Chris, first time ever I see your channel and I subscribed immediately. Lower prices are good news for us collectors. Maybe I’ll finally get my hands on one of these Oysterquartz I love… By the way some segments of the market are very steady - but it’s the ones that were never overpriced. I’m reshuffling my Seiko collection (selling a dozen) and I am the first surprised to see so much interest for discontinued icons and at very robust prices (vintage Pogue, Alpinists, even some quartz refs). Watches I bought for $500 5 years ago go for 1 to 2k in days on chrono24. Just don’t tell Watch Academy :). Thanks again and see u soon I hope

You are spot on. The listed prices on chrono and eBay are an illusion. Try selling a watch and see for how much it eventually goes for, the prices are lower. My rule of thumb is to take the lowest listing price on chrono and take off another 15-20% to get to something realistic. Sad but true.

The problem thats happening - the major brands are getting rid of the "mom & pop" ADs and going "Boutique Only". Omega have started. Rolex have acquired Bucherer. No discounts. Most LVMH & Richemont brands now, no discounts. The Grand Seiko Boutique and all GS ADs in my city now refuse to discount. Normal pricing for most brands (including most of the Rolex catalogue) is 15-20% below MSRP.

I think all of you are looking at grey market prices being double retail. 1. Prices for popular models are above retail in the grey market 116500ln is going for 35k USD still. 126500ln (less popular new reference) is going for 30k USD still. 2. Retail prices continue to climb (slowly trickling up across price hikes twice a year) 3. Rest of the other brands have not gone down in retail price 4. Discounts are not going to happen like before for the popular brands Prices for what people want are staying high. Prices for what people dont really want are coming down in both new and grey. They are also getting harder to move in the grey. Less people buying / trading.
@koolpep

All swatch group brands are happily discounting in some countries already. Recently bought a Tissot PRX for a staggering 35% sale from a retailer that is owned by the swatch group. Once the watches age on the shelves and won’t move, discounts will happen again unless brands have a buy back program for the retailers or only run their own boutiques. Omega happily gives you 15% (unless very in demand watch) where I live, even Rolex gives you discount on some precious metal watches.
@seanlingham5254

@koolpep
@koolpep 18 күн бұрын
Agree with most of your points, we are back to normal. Rolex hiking retail once or twice a year slowly dragging up pre-owned prices, so in the long term your watch can be sold for what you paid for, even after a short term dip. However, this will only work if there is still some demand for that model.

I did not notice a massive movement in prices, but this may have to do with the fact that my watches usually cost under 1000$ apart from the Aquaterra and I am not in a position to buy a watch which is ridiculously overpriced, which most of the watches starting from Rolex up are. So I see this as more of a healthy price correction.If I were to throw some more money at a watch, I would definitely go with one of Christopher Ward, Oris or Zelos, where I always had the impression that I got a good bang for my money.

Great insights… except for that ‘Rolex tried to do something about flipping’ remark. Uh, no they didn’t, no they aren’t, and they probably never will. Rolex plays both sides - CEO says ‘watches aren’t investments’ but love the free publicity about grey market prices being well above MSRP. I wish no one bad financial luck - but if you’re obsessing about your watch’s current value you’re in for a bad surprise. I’d recommend you read the business section of the news and look beyond the gov numbers - many MAJOR economies are in recession - or would be without useless gov jobs and war spending. And it’s going to get worse.

It is long overdue that watch price dropping is happening and I hope it continues as these need to be more affordable. taking out The Flippers altogether. Over 90% of watches should not be investments. I have adopted a policy over ten years now, if one is not prepared to wear a watch, why have it in your collection? Of course, a perpetual calendar split second chronograph minute repeater well over $100,000 is not an every day wearing watch and it is understandably if worn on the special occasion maybe a couple times a week but should be on a watch winder in a safe for the rest of the time. If an automatic movement is not in use, it is not actually good for the watch to sit idle for very long periods of time!

Oh the day I could buy a vc 222 at a price that a 45,000 a year salary man could afford would be the day of my life.

Chris hyped watches during this period. Now he’s telling us don’t believe the hype and your watch is worth less than you thought. Ming is the object of his diatribe. IMO, Chris is just trying to stay relevant.

I've never hyped any watches and I have consistently said on my channel to never pay over retail. In fact, I've consistently said that you should be paying under retail

@@WatchChris I’ve watched your content for a while. You hype watches all the time. Doesn’t bother me because that’s the game. Didn’t write you encouraged folks to pay over retail.
