I wish the newer version just updated this 114270 and did away with the other changes. Ideal watch would be a slightly updated bracelet (keep the hollow links, add a micro adjust, no to the aggressive taper, no to 19 mm), update the mvmt, update the lume, no to the font changes. The problem with the new explorer is that it is distinctly less classical-looking to my eye. It looks more bulbous at its head and the aggressive taper gives a feminine look to a decidedly masculine sports watch. I just don't understand why they did what they did

Short story- mid 2015, my late dad and me are checking out watches, Seiko off course 🤷🏼♂️. I am blown away by the Astron Sse060, yet I’m mumbling “ahh, too expensive, this will never happen”.. Start of 2016, I’m on a hospital bed in the cardiac intensive care, after having a full heart attack, and a life saving procedure. My dad sits on the bed and says two things- first, “you’re a bum and that’s why it happened to you”. (I’m not, honestly😉) Secondly, “I bought you a watch for your 40th birthday”, and he showed me on his phone what he ordered for me. My dad is gone now. That watch is my most prized material possession. That’s the piece that ignited the passion, and starting a collection with that piece was my way to respect and continue his passion.

I may one of the few who really don’t understand why Explorer is so popular when it’s almost like a glorified version of an Oyster Perpetual. Given that Explorer 2 looks like a GMT Master 2, I would have expected the Explorer to look like a Submariner than an Oyster Perpetual. Give me a Submariner with steel bezel, and I would call that an Explorer. But as you know, Rolex never made sense.

I know this is going to sound weird but hear me out... the 36mm Explorer is the best looking watch to wear with long sleeve shirts but the worst looking watch with short sleeves. Like YoureTerrific, I too have a 7 INCH WRIST (mine's actually slightly larger than 7 inches so.. better?) and owned a 114270 for several years. I live in a warmer climate and wear short sleeves for three or four months of the year and every year I had to put this watch in the box due to how bad it looked with short sleeve shirts. I can't explain it. Maybe I look weird with short sleeves? I dunno but I couldn't get over it and sold it. I want one every winter and then I remember what they looked like with short sleeve shirts and don't. Odd. It was odd.

I bought my 214270 (the 39mm version) back in 2018 on a trip to Japan; love it now as much as I did when I first tried it on. But your point about sizing is spot-on; it’s entirely a personal thing as to what size you prefer. If the newest 36mm had been available at the time I bought my 39, I would have gone back and forth, but I love how that particular watch looks ON ME. That being said, I think THIS video helped me realize that my next purchase is going to be the Medium Cartier Santos when I go back to Japan this year; that’s the one my heart is telling me is the one for me.

I recently bought (then returned) a 114270. Your video’s definitely encouraged me at the time I was looking into one. Ultimately I let it go because it wasn’t in the condition I wanted (too overpolished). However, I noticed some things that bother me. It’s not really a strap monster like people say. The lug holes are SO close to the case there’s no way to easily fit 3rd part straps. Sure you could get angled spring bars but I felt like the angle of the spring bar tips would eat away at the lugs over time. Also, there’s basically no AR like you said. Lastly, it’s a bit plain, which I know is the selling point for symmetry lovers. After a month with it I let it go, but videos like yours sure make me reconsider!
@yusufbest44757 ай бұрын
Actually, you dont really need curved spring bars. I used thinner spring bars and it works for nato straps without scratching/destroying them. But you are right, its not a strap monster as it takes some effort to remove the bracelet..
@aaronmercado98747 ай бұрын
@@yusufbest4475 Oh nice, I did not think about trying thinner spring bars. I'm sure that helps it with some nato straps, maybe thicker ones would still get frayed? And curious if that would also impact leather straps getting scraped by the case as well. I can understand from Rolex's perspective that they only want you to use the bracelet, which is a great bracelet. However, I just enjoy the freedom to change things up every now and then.

I bought one of the new 36mm Explorers a few months ago after a 6 month wait. Love it. I have to force myself not to wear it so that my other watches don’t get too sad. My only minor gripe is timekeeping. My other watches are Omega and they all only ever gain 1-2 seconds a day. My Explorer loses 1-2 secs a day, which feels significant compared to the Omegas. I find myself constantly checking how “slow” it is when in reality it’s irrelevant.

I say this because, as we know, many can be overpolished and sometimes it's hard to notice this in pictures. And even if they have a good return policy, if you buy a watch from halfway across the world, returning it will cost you a decent amount of money. How do you manage this issue with buying online?

These days I’m not sure why anyone buys a Rolex… style, snobbery, well made? I ended up with a used Explorer back in the 80s when a customer of mine was showing off his new Rolex (don’t remember which one) and he wanted to sell his old explorer and I bought it, box and all. I had a GMT from the mid 70s but didn’t wear it much and the explorer didn’t stick out as prominently as did the GMT. I wore the explorer constantly until one day it just disappeared. Don’t know what happened to it but it’s gone. These days I wear anything that keeps decent time and I’m not afraid of banging it up. The GMT was recent serviced for twice what I paid for it! It stays stored for safe keeping. I like the fact that Rolex has maintained a rather conservative approach to change- I really can’t tell how old most Rolex’s are anymore. I guess my real reason for owning a Rolex is their ruggedness, and being honest, James Bond wore one in Dr. No… I think!

As if it knows I am not an 'Explorer'. I have been unable to buy the stainless steel version at my local Halifax AD in the UK. but, after a few months they offered me, last year, the watch I have today: A new two tone (or bi metal) Explorer 36mm at RRP. So - Job done! I love it and I am one happy bunny .... I thought that's it, but it is not it because my brain still hankers after the all stainless steel model. My wallet does not.

I just tried on the new 36mm explorer (124270) before buying a 2003 114270 and can confirm that the older reference wears quite differently. Apparently the 124270 is actually closer to 35mm case size, which seems credible based on my hands on experience and side by side photos on the internet. In addition to the differences in case size, the larger, lumed numerals and hour markers on the 124270 make the face seem smaller compared to the 114270. The 114270 also has a 20mm lug width with a bracelet that tapers down to 16mm vs the 124270 with a 19mm lug width and a bracelet that tapers down to 14mm. I have a 7 in wrist and I think the 124270 is too small for me but I think the 114270 is perfect for me.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, the Explorer is a nice size, understated, functional and classic. However, I find it personally to be a bit boring; there is nothing really interesting about it, and I am not a big fan of black dials. Also, the font of the numbers is too square for my taste. Then there are the issues with any Rolex: high prices and very high servicing fees at the official service.

The Explorer is easily the most interesting and versatile Rolex ever made. I would buy one if Rolex deserved my money.

10 million Internet Points for not calling it the Explorer 1, which as we all know is a non existent model in Rolex's lineup. Sadly a lot of other YooToobe so called watch "experts" do not know this.......

Think any watch collector considers buying the Explorer at some point.
