The giant Pierre & Marie Curie scene is actually a parody of popular 1950's Sci-Fi films. In these movies a creature, typically spider, scorpion, or ant (but sometimes human) becomes exposed to radiation resulting in the creature enlarging to monstrously large size. The giant creature then would go on a killing spree, stomping on various buildings and causing general mayhem. (BTW: another episode that involves Homer and nuclear power is Season 5, Episode 3 " Homer goes to College")

There is absolutely something with Smithers having the hots for Burns, and it's a long-running thing through the entirety of The Simpsons. Poor Smithers just can't seem to realize that Burns is not just oblivious, but disinterested, with Burns' only love being himself. Poor Smithers deserves someone who adores him as much as he adores them.

Fun fact: The lounge singer who Mr. Burns hires for Homer and Marge’s date is actually a real-life singer named Tom Jones; he’s also the one who sings the song (“What’s New Pussycat”) that they played to try to make the depressed plant employees look happy on the job.
@1crazypj9 ай бұрын
Tom Jones is from South Wales, he won a talent show called 'Opportunity Knocks' hosted by Hughie Green in the late 1960's or early 70's. (I was a kid back then and watched it) Tom was a 'fixture' in Las Vegas for many many years and has had several hit records in Britain and around the world.
@eeyorehaferbock78708 ай бұрын
@@1crazypj didn’t even know he was British to be honest. All I really knew about him was that he sang those two songs (which I knew about thanks to a classic John Mulaney routine) and also apparently the opening number from Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove.

Matt Groening the creator of the Simpsons had homer work at a power plant because Matt lived through Three Mile Island and he thought it would be a funny idea to have an absolute idiot Homer Simpson work at a power plant. So he based the whole power plant job and everything off of the three mile Island incident in 1979.

Which is kinda ironic, because the Three Mile Island incident released practically no radioactive material at all. Compare it, for example, with the Windscale fire of 1957.

its probably not uncommon for the Nuclear Power plant to be the major employer in a small town like Springfield. the town probably only exists because of the plant. it brings in so much money that it pays for all the services. we saw that when Germany shut down its plants the towns that had them suddenly dried up because none of the residents realized the plant was subsidizing their lifestyles.
